UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

No big deal. We still have Ronan Walsh and Zach Hahn
So as of now UNH has two forwards coming in. Connor Deturris plays in the BCHL.Will be 21 in October. Committed in 2021. 44-13-16-29points. Had 39 points previous season. Sebastian Bradshaw plays in BCHL.He will be 20 in May. Big kid 6'4 but hasn't figured it out yet. 52-7-10-17points. The BCHL is weak this year i'd figure both players would have better numbers at this point.

If you like running I'd suggest keeping an eye on Freshman at UNH named Ruth White. The best part she was born and raised in Orono. :) She is like 4' 10" tall , 80 lbs and is headed to the Olympics at some point. Unreal runner.

Souza's recruiting approach has been fine in general but the execution has been horrible. Over the past 10 years there's been at least a dozen kids that committed to UNH early that have turned out to not be HE caliber players at all or low end HE kids. The whole idea of getting early commitments is to give a scholy to a top kid in exchange for the security a kid gets at say age 16 of knowing he's all set for college. In the new age of recruiting (starting a year or two ago) the approach may not be applicable anymore.

Oddly, UNH "locked up" kids that at age 16 that showed promise but were't established top kids and oftentimes were not being seriously recruited by other schools. You learn alot about a player at age 16-17 simply by finding out what other programs are on him. Many of Souza's kids never improved. That's just poor scouting. And then there's the relatively few top kids that they locked up early (LeLeggia, Stultze and Commesso, etc.) and lost due to negligent management or in one case because of the NHL draft. UNH would have been better off simply waiting until 6-12 months before enrollment and recruiting older kids that at least were men with more experience.

It causes me to recall Souza's opening press conference when he became head coach where he was asked about his recruiting philosophy and said "there's a lot of good hockey players out there". That was my first "oh, no" moment with him. Jack Parker and Jerry York must have rolled their eyes when they were apprised of that comment.

In light of the fact that UNH is second rate now, the next coach would be wise to skip trying to recruit 16 year olds (the transfer portal makes it less enticing) and simply shop on the transfer portal and the 21 year old freshman crowd. That's Lowell's approach. If the coach is talented, he likely could use their maturity and hockey experience to at least put a reasonably good team on the ice.

Maybe she can be taught to skate for MS7 ? What a recruiting coup that would be !! No hands but unreal fast blue line to blue line ??

The following comment in no way is an attempt to take the current HC off the hook. The buck stops with the guy in the big chair....BUT...the lack of criticism of the rest of the staff is mind boggling. Hypocritical would be a more accurate word. The fans can't have it both ways. On the one hand they minimize Umile's record by attributing his success solely to Lassonde and McCloskey's recruiting and at the same do not hold the current staff at all accountable for the current failures.

I think the logic is, if those guys are the problem, Souza could have fired them but he has kept them on staff through 7 years of failure.

Here is hoping for an active approach to the portal. A few who appear to stand out at positions of need.
When has a Swedish transfer portal Goaltender ever done anything for UNH...

Also, Trey Augustine staying at MI State for another year is going to get someone quite the goaltender in Di Pasquo. If only we could replace our graduating Paisan with another. Of course Souza would have him ride the pine until the final weekend of the season...

Lots of people in Red Wings World asking a lot of pointed questions about Augustine over the last 24+ hours.

At the time, Yzerman trading for a 3rd goalie (Mrazek) at the deadline made little sense. Guessing he knew before us ...

Let's be real, our AD, fka SB, is a Compliance Director, not an Athletic Director.

As long as UNH continues to check the boxes with the NCAA overseers and the status quo is maintained, she doesn't get fired and all is well in her world.
Sadly, this is as true and accurate as it gets. Maybe Tortorella can fire/buy out MS7, and step in as interim HC??

On Chicklets, Whitney talks about how scared he'd be coming up to Durham to play because the talent (and fans) were intimidating.

Hard to believe, UNH is a cupcake team now.
It all started to deteriorate when Blue Skies forced the Pep Band director to play over the fans' usual warm "greetings" to the opposition in pregame.

I've always wondered which blue-haired UNH Admin got into his head to force the change ... beginning of the end of what used to be the greatest home ice advantage in the league, if not in the entirety of D-1 Hockey ... now we don't even hear the "bloody stumps" chant, do we?? Sad ...

Many of us old timers have broad networks in the hockey community. Stories and first hand accounts from coaches, scouts, former players, current players and staff aren't uncommon. Most of the time, it's best to take things with a grain of salt, but when a variation of the same story presents itself time and time again, you begin to pay attention.
This, in spades.

It was over when the lame "I Believe in UNH" chant and banner was introduced. It also could have been Waste Management's "sponsorship" of the fish.

Ah, the days of Zeta Chi's profane chants, witty retorts and the inevitable thumbs up and 'wooos!" from Gravalese as he did his warm up laps
