UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

I think that Jared Whale is only a junior so has another year if he wants it. Rico Dimatteo is in his fifth year so will be moving on. So, need a back up for Whale.

I still do not get why the extreme drop off in record this season given that it is essentially the same team as last year minus Sardarian and Blaisdell.
Well if you look at the stats Teez came up with it seems it's lack of scoring and goal tending. But also...consistency from one game to the next esp against tough competition? I dunno.

Agree they are better than this regardless of competition winning 7 straight isn't always easy? You said it yourself that the main reason (or certainly a strong one) for their decent season last year was Hellsten...

Before UVM the mood was they 'control their destiny' not sure where thats at right now.

In my opinion, in order - Hellsten, luck and one magical weekend in mid-February. It's easy to 'say' luck so I'll try and give some examples

  • The 23-24 shooting % stat I referenced earlier may be an indicator. More pucks sneaking in. Like when an NFL team has a high turnover differential, usually isn't replicated next season.
  • 9 of 36 points against a banged up shell of themselves NU early in the season.
  • 6 additional points vs a Lowell team who won 2 games in the last 3 months of the season. Feels like they had some favorable scheduling breaks. I seem to recall BU got off to a slow start and dropped a few games after UNH beat them early on before they found their stride.
  • A weaker HE. Lowell & UCONN were worse. Merrimack too. This could be argued since UMASS & NU seem to be quite a bit weaker this year.
  • Beating Maine 5-2, 6-2 at the Whitt only to lose 5-0 when it mattered.
Reading this back, I don't really know. I could be cherry picking stuff. Whatever the reason it was quite the outlier.

A lot of enthusiasm and opportunity has been fumbled away in…let’s say…disappointing fashion…

The NCAA Tournament outcome is looking awfully precarious. I’d guess they’ll need to win three of four on their upcoming stretch versus BC, MC and Maine. Watching the last few weeks, that seems like a real tough ask…

Two wins with a hot finish; maybe.
ideally MC is the win, but after this last 4 weekend stretch, ORHS would be the betting favorites.

I have zero response from the AD and coach on where we are at and not for a personal meeting, just some interaction with the fans. MS7 told me he wanted to start a coaches club and work to raise money, but he did, his salary.
This second half performance was so predictable. We saw it coming like a freight train from a mile away, it was just a matter of time. What will force change? AD Ally seems like she couldn’t care less. The program has become irrelevant to highly touted recruits, arena renovations stalled, and she’s invisible. Just wait for the defections once the portal opens up. Souza appears defeated, his whole demeanor is just low energy and really bothers me. Show some freakin emotion please. Call me a curmudgeon, but this has become so predictable it almost humorous.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

We need a #1 goalie. I could see if the stats were reversed where Saturday he was gassed and things fell apart, but the splits are crazy bad.

I can tell you the drop off. Last year Hellesten was unexpected, and we had success early. Then teams figured out what we were doing and in Umile/MS7 fashion we never adjusted and stayed the course.

Here is what we have left

BC @ Home (#1, #1)
MC @ Home (NA, #26)
Away @ Maine (#6, #4)
Away @ Maine (#6, #4)
UMass @ Home (#20, #15)
Away @ Umass (#20, #15)
Away @ BC (#1, #1)
BC @ Home (#1, #1)
Away @ Lowell (#8, #10)
Lowell @ Home (#8, #10)

If you go by PWR as the tell all, we have 7 games against Top 10 teams, 12, against Top 15 teams, and MC.

Best case is a tie against BC, Win vs MC, win vs Mass, and a win senior night against Lowell.

I am taking the under on all of these.

Trivia question: Name ORHS hockey players who have matriculated at UNH.

In the meantime, UNH moves back up to 16th in PWR tonight without even leaving the pub (aka, Libby’s).

Ummm does he not remember FOH?!? I wouldn't join this group nope....

Just watched replay of Ottawa Senators 6-0 win against the Wild last night (also 52-16 SOG advantage).

I place the Over/Under for Angus Crookshank playing with the Senators this season at 1 game.

Well gang looks like after all is said and done for the weekend we are 15th PWR with the Flagship right on our heels.
Puts you back in the hunt for a bid while looking at a tough sched ahead.
Here's hoping! But will we remained ranked that might be a different story.

Ps..yes, I am well aware where we stand in the HE...:)

Not surprised. I sent an email to the AD last year, never heard a word.

I am hoping that we remain in the regular season Hockey East basement for the duration while going 5-5-0 to maintain a better than 0.500+ win percentage. I think that making the NCAA’s from the HEA basement would be the coolest banner that we have ever raised. Still six HEA teams ahead of us in PWR, so probably need to leapfrog at least one, and more probably two, of them to make the cut. Every HEA team has a tough schedule ahead of them, which is part of the reason that HEA may get five or even six teams into the NCAA’s this season. OOC wins are paying the entire HEA conference dividends this year.

Everyone pulling their weight for a tourney bid. Except for the Cats themselves...

Win those ties with MC & Northeastern, tie game two at BU and beat UVM (when they had an early 2-0 lead) and they're 12th; Firmly in the field. It isn't failing to beat the big boys, but the results against teams behind them (results they had in their hot little hands), that have hurt them...

After starting the season 10-1, the UNH Boys of October have returned to a historical start to the new year. Oh wait, that first part didnt happen. But the second part surely did.

Hey AD Rich, care to have any of your media minions "share" MS7 contract opt outs with the fanbase?

GIVE THEM HOPE!!

I see one, maybe two wins for the remainder of the season. This will keep them living in the HE basement, where apparently the accomodations are comfortable (forever pessimistic!!) copyright Jellsville ;)

A quick exit in the HE tourney, then hope for a resignation letter from Souza. (forever pessimistic!!) copyright Jellsville ;)

Unfortunately, there aren't really many options for opt outs. They can buy his contract out by paying him $240,000 or he can be released for cause for creating a "significant negative effect on the goodwill of the public at large toward or confidence in the University, its Department of Athletics or the UNH Men's Ice Hockey program." Or if he chooses to go to a non-hockey east school.

Exactly...someone I know has the recent contract and that's pretty much it. So focusing on what we can that's in our control seems about all we can do and sure,
we want a whole lot more for the team. Have tix for the Regional already and holding out hope (albeit thin) that somehow, someway...we get there. Have been to
everyone of them since my Wildcat debut in 2013 and I'm sure it will once again be painful to see the UNH logo on the ice...but no UNH. Sigh....

Heading to the Beanpot tonight; have never been got lucky on some free tix! Leaving the UNH jersey at home but my friend has
a Bowdoin College one I can wear...they offered me a Maine jersey but I can't do that in good conscience ha!

You should do that for the confusion factor alone… a UNH fan in a Maine jersey at the bean pot. I think that would cause BU fans to lose their marbles if you told them.

Was disappointed with Jensen's play on Friday night. Got beaten wide several times to allow good chances to BU, including either the first or second goal, I can't recall.

I noticed that UNH is currently among the worst (60th) in team save percentage and feel that this poor stat shouldn't be shouldered solely by our goaltenders. Some 58% of Div. I teams have a save percentage of .900 or higher... Skaters, including forwards, earned a piece of this statistic.

Given that the school won't be inclined to buy out the coach's contract, should the assistant coaches be the focus of our current woes or would that be akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic?
