UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

Went on a little trip comparing conference play only 23-24 stats vs 24-25. UNH is a little better from the face-off dot in 24-25, but that's the only area of improvement in the limited statistics HE provides. PP%, PK% are almost identical YoY and they best in the conference at limiting shots against 1st in 23-24 and 2nd in 24-25.

Where things differ:

  • YoY Shooting Percentage - 9.8% (6th) last year compared to 7.3% (10th) this year.
  • Goaltending
    • GAA - Hellsten 2.04 (2nd in conf of 15 qualified), Whale 2.49 (7th of 13)
    • SV% Hellsten .909 (7th of 15 qualified goalies), Whale .897 (11th of 13)
  • Goals for - 4th last year compared to 11th (last) this year
  • Penalty mins per game - 10.38 last year compared to 13.38 this

Just when you think it can't get worse, you give up a touchdown and lose a game you were never in.

1. Friday Whale continues to struggle
2. Giving up a goal within the first 2 minutes of each period (one inside a minute) is not possible to overcome
3. Another penalty kills any momentum and essentially killed the game
4. This team can't handle speed and let BU walk in down low all game
5. And what is this puck flipping thing? Whatever MS7 thinks it will accomplish is doing the exact opposite.

This team looks like they are lost and this is becoming more apparent it is all coaching. And this staff has no idea how to remedy anything.

What's the lowest seeded team to have ever won the Hockey East tournament?

Asking for obvious reasons. Not like I can see UNH actually even making to Boston, FWIW.

Well, at least that's January over, I guess. Roll on February ...

Gotta text from a fan and they said BU won it after being last in the HE but, I don't have a date on that? I guess it could be possible...that a last place
team runs the table. Not holding my breath tho...

Yeah, onto Feb...10 more RS games to get through then the usual early out of the tournament. So much to look forward to! That said..and I've said
this before, so glad Rob C is having a great Sr. year...he must be on some kind of point streak..

Appreciate your sleuthing here...stats like these explain a lot about where we are. Can't speculate how the next set of games will turn out but these stats going
against the top teams left to play can point to a speculative outcome. That said...what happened to UML last night? Ryan Leonard? Had a bad game? I haven't read
their thread so I don't know how the felt about how their team played over all and you aren't going to win them all. But UML...after coming of EIGHT wins last
season, will assuredly make the NCAA tournament unless they have a complete break down going forward. Could be wrong here...

So something that I've wanted to get off my chest is the message that must/has to be under everything around this 'we can't recruit good players because we
dont have a 'fill in the blank' has to be felt by the team. I wonder if they feel that and I sure hope they don't...When you haven't beaten a team like BU
in YEARS at their barn as weird as it seems, I'm not blaming them.

Who knows? Maybe we get 'lucky' Friday night and win Sat as well. But these stats say otherwise. Our best chance is winning Saturday (and that is not
going to be easy Scotty B LOVES to win at the 'Whitt and you know he'll have his team ready).

Even as strange as this season is rankings wise (I'll be shocked if we are still ranked after this weekend) my guess is UNH will end up over all in the mid
20's when all is said and done...and that, will be not easy. Going back to your stats above, that's probably generous. But one game at a time...

Or, a corollary question, has a last place conference team ever made the NCAA’s? Even if we do not get to the Garden, it is still mathematically possible for us to be the last at large team into the NCAA’s, let’s say if we beat BC two out or three and keep our record just barely above 0.500.

Since the calendar turned, here are the stats for the team

W-L: 1-6
GF: 2.25
GA: 3.80
PP: 6-29 (20.69%)
PK: 8-35 (77.14%)
Penalties 41 (5.77 per game)
PIM: 126 (17.75 per game)
Avg Penalty Time: 3:04 per penalty

Here are you Whale splits for Friday and Saturday. It is obvious there is an issue with Friday games. What? That is unexplainable

A lot of enthusiasm and opportunity has been fumbled away in…let’s say…disappointing fashion…

The NCAA Tournament outcome is looking awfully precarious. I’d guess they’ll need to win three of four on their upcoming stretch versus BC, MC and Maine. Watching the last few weeks, that seems like a real tough ask…

Two wins with a hot finish; maybe.

This second half performance was so predictable. We saw it coming like a freight train from a mile away, it was just a matter of time. What will force change? AD Ally seems like she couldn’t care less. The program has become irrelevant to highly touted recruits, arena renovations stalled, and she’s invisible. Just wait for the defections once the portal opens up. Souza appears defeated, his whole demeanor is just low energy and really bothers me. Show some freakin emotion please. Call me a curmudgeon, but this has become so predictable it almost humorous.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

Fair.

I wouldn’t even say I was especially optimistic as much as I saw/see the available opportunity for the program beginning to (potentially) converge. Unfortunately, seeing opportunity on the horizon and actually grabbing opportunity are two different things.

Put me in the boat of enough is enough. Dont care who (Souza or other) fixes this, but its way past time it gets fixed…

Although an apparent newbie, I've been around and watching the team from afar for quite some time now. This most recent offseason was particularly upsetting to me as I learned that our top two goaltenders wouldn't be coming back - one to the professional ranks and one into the transfer portal. I would agree with many posters on this forum that Muszelik had underperformed in his first two seasons, but with the departure of Hellsten he must have know that the job was his at the outset. Also, he was selected and played on the NTDP, so other coaches had to anticipate something good in his game and thus success at the collegiate level. In spite of this knowledge that he would be the #1 goaltender, he bolted. I don't know the inside workings of these happenings, but believe that our coaching staff either would have or should have been aware and therefore ramp up their efforts to secure Muszelik.
While I have no specific beef with the job Whale has done for us, I would deem him to be serviceable but short of outstanding. Considering the coaching style of New Hampshire, I would think that this goaltending position would be of paramount importance coming into the 2024-2025 season. Our recruiters seem to have done an admirable job in securing the services of Grout for the 2026-7 season, but Lescarbeau who is slated to come in next fall doesn't appear to be extraordinary at this stage of his USHL career with a somewhat high GAA and low save percentage. Are we again going to rely on the Portal to bail us out in filling this critical position? Feel free to disagree with my observation as I have no inside knowledge of the goaltender planning process.

In any event, I'm not expecting miracles for the latter part of this season, but would love to be pleasantly surprised!

I think that Jared Whale is only a junior so has another year if he wants it. Rico Dimatteo is in his fifth year so will be moving on. So, need a back up for Whale.

I still do not get why the extreme drop off in record this season given that it is essentially the same team as last year minus Sardarian and Blaisdell.
