UML Recruiting: Finally in the 20s!

Only one scouting report available on Buckley from Neutral Zone (who isn't yet rated by them), and it's from a tournament in January, 2022.
Buckley is a small, high motor prospect with a quick first step and fearless approach. One of the smallest guys on the ice, he attacks puck carriers on the forecheck, will throw himself in front of a shot in his own end and was a pesky penalty killer. He didn’t find the stat sheet here but he was always around the puck. He buzzes around the sheet, disrupts on the forecheck and uses his burst and hustle to create chance for his teammates. Grade: B-

7-12-19 in total of all the forwards in a combined 42 games played. Lot of fire power incoming....
The numbers don't look good (and I know I noted that recently), but a reminder that of those 5 forwards, at least 3 are probably still another year away from getting to Lowell. Another thing to remember, this is Busch's first full year in the NAHL, Buckley's first in the AJHL and Kresl's first in the BCHL. As of today, Buckley is still 16, and the other four are all 18. This has to be expected from younger players, we're just not used to having commits that age.

Interesting to see that this is the 7th defensive commit currently, while we only have 5 forwards (and 2 goalies). I do wonder how long it will take the idea of low offensive prowess for the past few years to change and get some attention from forward recruits?

About our newest commit, it could wind up meaning nothing, but I remember August 1st when the '08s could first commit, there was a tweet I saw that if you can get someone from that LI Gulls U16, you had a good pickup. Pedalino is the 9th player from the U16s to commit. NZ has him as a 3.5* currently.

A couple of reports from NZ, the first from June 30th:
Pedalino is a left-shot defenseman with good mobility and puck-handling skills. He excelled at retrieving pucks, making strong outlet passes on the breakout, supporting his partner, and getting pucks to the net. While he isn’t particularly offensive-minded, in the second half he did jump into the play from the point to receive #10 Adamo’s pass at the net for a tap-in goal. Pedalino possesses a solid toolkit of skills in skating, passing, and puck management, though he sometimes fails to fully execute plays on the offensive side, leaving you wanting more from his game. Grade: B
April 23rd:
Pedalino is a stockier-built, left-shot defenseman who has good mobility in all directions and puck-handling skills. While it seemed coming into the season he would be a leading offensive-style blue liner rather, he has developed into a solid, 2-way defenseman on the top pair with #33 Medved. He thrives on his gap positioning defensively and puck-moving abilities now. He scored on Saturday vs. PAL Isles as he recognized the open ice down the slot, then received the #53 Miller pass, beating the goalie with a wrist shot for the goal. He was good at retrieving pucks, making a good 1st pass on the breakout, supporting his partner, and getting pucks to the net. Grade: B

NEHJ had this to say about our newest commit.
On Sunday, Anthony Pedalino committed to UMass Lowell. The 5-foot-10, 187-pound defenseman is a puck-moving machine for the 16U Long Island Gulls. Through 31 games this season, he has four goals and 16 points. That’s been in line with his offensive production over the last two years: 64 points in 79 games as a 15O; 58 in 65 as a 14U.

It’s a great get for UMass Lowell — a potential difference-maker for the River Hawks when he eventually steps foot on campus, which is still a while away.

Lowell commit James Johnson traded from Blackfalds to Nanaimo in the BCHL. The good news for the 6'6" young man is he leaves a team that has 2 wins in their first 20 games and is the worst team in the BCHL. Nanaimo is also struggling this year, but at least not that bad!

Hey everyone, new to the USCHO forums but been active on twitter talking all things Lowell puck for a few years now. Seems like this would be a good place to ask everyone's thoughts on CHL players becoming eligible? I feel like Lowell can benefit from the rule change due to more quality D-1 players becoming available, but still not expecting them to get a lot of the high-end 16 and 17 year olds. Although due to the increased pool size maybe some of the high end guys won't want to have to fight for bottom six minutes when they could get top six at a place like Lowell. I'm also encouraged by reports by McMahon and others that the blue bloods didn't want this to happen. Could be an effective counter against their NIL funds.

It appears UNH isn't wasting any time getting CHL players.

According to NZ, one is a 4.25*, another is a 4*. They're all 2004 DOB, so all will be 21 next year, but good pickups it seems for UNH.

I thought Lowell would already be in on the action. Really hoping they go after those leagues.

In answer to your question, I think that this first and foremost helps the blue bloods. Many of those same programs lost some of these same kids to Major Junior in the first place. But yes, there will be a trickle down effect as there are more players to choose from. With this program having started so late in the 2025 recruiting cycle though, I'm curious to see how it plays out going forward once NCAA teams have a bit more time to recruit and plan for these kids (as opposed to having to only play for HS or Junior). I also wonder if this will impact expenses on college programs, more recruiting = more travel/time required. Vermont just picked up '04 Cedrick Guindon (a 4.5* by NZ). He was expected to be drafted by the NHL at some point, but it never worked out for him.

I'm sure they are looking. They will lose a lot on defense so I could see them going after a defenseman or two. Currently they have '04 Johnson and Classon that will have to come in. I could also see them bringing in another goaltender for next season. It would be nice to pick up a couple of goal scorers.
