UML Recruiting: Finally in the 20s!

For the last few years, it seemed like UMass was the one holding a ton of future commits. Maine has now surpassed them for the second straight year. As is the norm with Norm (ha!), Lowell has the fewest future commits (2025 and beyond) with 9.

UConn 11
Maine 33
UMass 18

As the commitments of the late 07s and 08s starts to slow ... I've updated the numbers showing only the schools that have a different number than what I posted 19 days ago. Surprisingly, to me anyway, MC has the biggest increase. The only three HE teams that haven't picked up a commit in this time are UConn, UNH and of course ...

I'm probably the only one that finds this interesting, but since the rule change re Aug 1st, Lowell hasn't picked up a single "future" commit (I can't remember when the rule changed). I only went back 5 years to the 2021 recruiting class. The only August commit we picked up in that entire time frame was Dylan Cook but he was for the next year, not 2-4 seasons out. Don't know if it means anything, just ... information.

Preseason games have begun for the various junior leagues. The current Lowell recruits are on the following preseason rosters:

BCHL
Stephen Grumley (D) - Sherwood Park
James Johnson (D) - Blackfalds
Charles Kresl (F) - Vernon
Carson Olsen (D) - Salmon Arm
Owen McCarthy (D) - Trail

NAHL
Kyle Jones (G) - Oklahoma

USHL
Lucas Busch (F) - Omaha
Easton Jacobs (F) - Sioux City
Ryan Kroll (D) - Omaha
Nicky Romeo (F) - Dubuque

A new recruit, '08 defenseman Owen McCarthy. Owen will be playing for Trail (BCHL) this season.

2008-born defender Owen McCarthy has committed to UMass-Lowell! He put up 23 points in 29 games for RINK Hockey Acadmey Kelowna U17 Prep last year and will suit up for the Trail Smoke Eaters of the BCHL for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Seems like a really good pickup, a 4* according to NZ. This is what they said about him on July 31
McCarthy was a fourth round WHL pick in his bantam season but he made real progress this past year playing with the U17s at Rink Hockey Academy finishing the season with 23 points in 29 games and signed with Trail Smoke in the spring. Seeing how players in the BCHL are ineligible playing in the WHL that season would point to McCarthy having aspirations south of the border. A pure skating, confident puck handler who sees the ice well and can make plays up ice. He’s also sound defensively – stick in lanes, anticipates where the puck is going and intercepts passes and manages tight gaps to take away opponents time and space. The son of former NHL defenseman Steve McCarthy played in the WHL before signing with the Chicago Blackhawks so this won’t be a layup for NCAA schools trying to pluck him out of British Columbia.

Very early in the season obviously, but Lowell recruits have started off slowly in their respective leagues.

The four defensive Lowell commits in the BCHL haven't found the net yet. Olsen, McCarthy, Grumley and Johnson have combined for 16 games played and only three assists (all by Grumley). The lone forward commit (Kresl) in the BCHL has a 1-1-2 in 4 games.

In the NAHL, Classon has 1 point in 7 games, while Busch has a 1-3-4 in three games. Jones has a 87.5% save rate and is currently over a 3 GAA in 5 games played.

In the USHL, Jacobs, Romeo and Kroll have combined for 1 assist (Jacobs) in 14 games played.

Lowell picks up a goalie commit for either 2025 or 2026. Austin Bruins (NAHL) starting goalie Jack Solomon has committed to the program. The 6'3" native of St. Louis, MO, Solomon was born Feb 17, 2005 and played for Alberta in the AJHL last year. In 5 games this year, he's 3-2 with a 2.39 GAA. He shows as a 3.5* as per NZ.

I'm guessing it's for 2025. Unless Norm plans to go back into the portal, all we'll have for next year is Beni Halasz -senior and Kyle Jones -freshman (assuming he comes next year).

I would also think 2025, I just listed 25 or 26 since the article said that it wasn't a set deal. I'd be surprised if Norm brought in Jones at 18, as that obviously isn't what he generally does.

Think we should still have Nordlund since he didn't play at all his freshman year, so I don't think he used a year of eligibility that year

Nordlund is in his last year of eligibility, and is probably not going to dress this year unless 1 of the other 3 goalies is injured.

Pretty sure you get a Redshirt year for not playing at all during one of your four seasons though. Whether or not he uses it, or we even offer him the chance to use it, is a different story
