UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Interesting note, from a while back, that was brought up by this tweet by Mike McMahon today...
Mike McMahon ‏@MikeMcMahonCHN
I can't comprehend how CM's Liam Coughlin hasn't committed anywhere yet. His older brother was a Lowell commit but played in the Q.
Coughlin's brother had been on the USNTDP and commited to Lowell for '03. Here's what I'd written about his commitment back then...
Lowell received a nice after Christmas gift as US National Development Team member Kevin Coughlin committed to UML. Coughlin, a 6'2", 217 pound player is a physical presence on the ice. Born 04/23/85, the youngster will be another Massachusetts residence on the roster as he is originally from South Boston. Coughlin might have been helped in his decision to attend Lowell by fellow incoming player Chris Fontas, who played with Couglin on the Cushing Academy team in 2001/2002. Coughlin had a 22-26-48 line that year for Cushing and was named the team's Best Offensive Player. He also played for Team Massachusetts in the Select 17 Festival, and the prior year in the Select 16 Festival. So far this year, the right shot has a 3-6-9 line in 46 games, with 53 penalty minutes. Coughlin is only the second player from the NDT Program to attend UML, joining Ron Hainsey. One final note, Coughlin was selected in the 7th round by Quebec in the QMJHL draft in June 2002.
Unfortunately for Lowell ... that last line of mine is why. He went to the Q.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Congrats to Tyler Sifferlen and Malden Catholic for winning the 2013 Super 8. Sifferlen had the game tying goal to make it 1-1, before MC went on to win 3-2.

In the CJHL playoffs... Ryan Collins has a 2-2-4 in 3 games for Ottawa, which leads their best of 7 quarterfinal series 3-0. Chris Maniccia has an assist in 2 games, as Smiths Falls trails 2-0.

In the BCHL playoffs, Evan Campbell had the only goal of the game for Langley on Saturday night, and that stood as the game winner as Langley tied their series at 1.

In the AJHL playoffs, Corey Scammon hasn't played in the first two games for Brooks, which lead their series 2-0.

In the USHL regular season, Joseph Gambardella had a 1-1-2 in two games for Des Moines (who got a win and a loss). Michael Kapla had a goal in Sioux City's only game of the weekend, a 3-2 loss.

Now that Parker is leaving.... Don't you feel as if UML should try and sweep Jack Eichel (from Chelmsford) away as a punch in the gut??? He lives in the backyard .... oh yeah and he was leading in points for the under 16s last time I checked

We don't want schools like BU coming in and stealing recruits away from Lowell, so why should we want Lowell to do the same to other schools?

Because it happens and not doing to a school isn't going to prevent them from trying it in the future. You do what you can (within the rules) to make your team as good as it can be.

It really comes down to the rules of the gentleman's agreement within the league.

If we keep doing damage and/or BU makes a questionable coach pick we will see what happens.

No. Once a recruit has committed he should be off limits. I know this has changed some over the past few years, which is too bad. I realize there is no actual rule, but I would doubt the Lowell staff would want to get involved with anything that looked questionable. If a recruit decommits then that's a different story.

What about Stenglein? I thought he was committed, only to have Mich State swoop him away?

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

If a kid can't keep the commitment they made that makes me question his character unless the school he commited to changes the rules (new coach, promising a slot that then isn't going to materialize)

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

In the week that Lowell will be playing Wisconsin, they get a commitment from a kid from Madison, WI.
Dylan Zink ‏@dzink20 3h
Excited about officially committing to play at UMass-Lowell next year!
Junior Hockey Scouting report. He's 6', 175, born 10/8/92. He put up a 15-17-32, in 50 games for Jamestown in the NAHL this year.

Colin O'Neill of Washington Little Caps has committed to UMass Lowell. He's a '95. Lot of scuttlebutt at last week's Beantown about UML being in on more elite prospects. Lot of small schools have had runs for a year or two with a few good players, but UML is different with the facility they have and coach being two for two. Didn't take him a few years.

Any thoughts on O'Neill?

Honestly don't know much but for the coaches to offer a '95 they have to be high on him. Impressed with how Bazin has fit guys into his system. Don't underestimate Bazin's ability to get most out of his guys. This is no flash in the pan. Sifferlen will be a Pendenza like player. I watched him about 5 times this winter.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Catching up on recruit info ...

Ryan Collins had a hat trick in Game 1 of the Best of 7 CJHL semifinals, leading Ottawa to a 5-0 win. He and his team were shut out in game 2 though, 3-0, but bounced back with a 5-1 win in Game 3. Collins had an assist in that game. Collins has a 5-4-9 in 7 playoff games.

Chris Maniccia's Junior career ended in the playoffs, with Smiths Falls getting bounced in the first round. Maniccia had a 0-4-4 in 5 games.

In the BCHL, Langley's season ended in the first round of the playoffs as well. Evan Campbell had 2 goals in 5 games, while Evan Anderson was held without a point.

In the AJHL, Corey Scammon has played in 3 playoff games for the Brooks Bandits, but has no points. His team is down 2-0 in the semifinals.

In the USHL, the regular season is winding down and Michael Kapla's Sioux City is not going to be in the playoffs. He did have an assist in their 5-1 loss on Saturday. Joseph Gambardella and his Des Moines Bucs are also on the outside looking in, but he did have an assist (and a missed penalty shot) in a 4-1 win Saturday.

Re: UML Recruiting, Building for the future

Don't usually follow the recruiting too much but caught this in the recently released Globe All-Scholastic boys hockey team. He was one of the Globe's players of the year. Was he recruited by Lowell or is just walking on/trying out?

Cam Owens - Division 2: Wilmington, Senior, C
Owens tallied 21 goals and 25 assists in his senior year, leading the Wildcats to the Division 2 state championship for the second straight year. He finished his career at Wilmington with 72 goals and 86 assists and plans to attend UMass Lowell.
