UML 2013/2014 Season ... The Target is firmly on

Re: UML 2013/2014 Season ... The Target is firmly on

Three games in which they've scored just one goal. Awful, awful so far. Glad I was distracted with the Revs on Saturday night, otherwise I'd be pretty ****ed off.
Both goals this weekend were scored the same way. They got the puck to the net and fought for the loose puck. They need to do a lot more of that. Give QU credit they did a nice job, especially Friday night, of keeping Lowell from the front of the net but overall I thought it was a pretty easy weekend for the QU goalie. Lots of long range shots with no traffic in front or shots right into him. Many times the Hawks were just too slow getting shots off which resulted in a blocked shot. A lot to work on this week. Hopefully they can get the offense going on this Michigan trip.

So are the issues strictly attitude, i would like to believe so... But I'd rather hear from more seasoned hands.

I honestly can't grasp what it is, but it's definitely a mental thing. Expedient decision-makiing on the ice is flatly non-existent; at times it looks like they don't even know each other. When they do get it together, it's like a Star Trek scene with the phase differential set at -0.02, you can see it but it's just that far off. The net to them appears to look as small as a dartboard bulleye.

When was UMass good?

In fairness, they really had potential in 2004 to really start something special...in that HE Championship Final; I don't recall how many posts UMass hit in OT but I thought it was at least 2 or 3. For my money, that's a game you have to watch from start to finish and probably one of the best NCAA games I've ever seen. Lowell fans owe a debt of gratitude to Ben Murphy and Jimmy Howard. In 2007, Maine once again bested them in the NCAA East Final with Quick. IMHO, if UMass parted ways with defensive-minded Cahoon in the mid-2000s, they would have had one league or NCAA championship and Lowell's hockey team most likely would have been eliminated focusing their efforts on the flagship with the trophies.

Anyways, here's the latest edition of fun with statistics...And all this time everyone thought Lowell's cycle was a result of class size.

There are two issues with those stats in how they can be misleading....

1. Lowell came nowhere near the tourney in 2005, 2006, made a gutsy run in 2009, then imploded in 2010.
2. Those fire sales were expected as 10+ seniors graduated the year before. I don't care how good or bad a team may be, but when you lose half of a team, there are going to be some growing pains.

In this case, we have a rather balanced class size and problems with all four classes; the freshman show promise but need time; and several members of the three upper classes nowhere to be found. Certainly, Ruhwedel was an integral part but it didn't fall apart when he was hurt, so I don't get it at all.

Yes, it's true that they haven't played a league game and it's still early. At the same time, how confident would you be feeling on 01 November going to a home UNH game (where HE points are 18-19% more valuable) and the team's record being 1-5. Have to get rid of these bad habits now because one simply can't rely on going 19-2-3 to finish a season (or whatever it was) each year.

FYI if you're heading to Michigan next week, the Alumni Office bought up all of the tickets and you need to order them through their office. There's an online form here to order tickets and sign up for the pre-game receptions.
I'm not sure how many tickets Lowell received but according to the Alumni Office link the tickets are sold out.

I love how everyone is projecting how this season will go based on 4 games.
Rand Pecknold, QU's coach, said after the game Lowell will be a top 5 team when it's all said and done. Crazy how people jump off so quick but they'll be the ones jumping right back on in a couple weeks. Good luck the rest of the way. Hopefully we'll see you in Philly

Yeah some folks were suicidal last year when UML started 2-5-1 and somehow they "salvaged" the season. :)

FWIW, I haven't given up on this season. Just frustrated at what's been going on.

Yeah, it's the process that makes one frustrated, the result is second.

If it was the result we'd be complaining about egregious puck luck

Wow. I got my tickets in the mail from the alumni office yesterday. We're in Section H at MSU and Section 23 (behind the net) at Michigan.

Re: UML 2013/2014 Season ... The Target is firmly on

Per the alumni office, here is the Lowell block of tickets for anyone that hasn't bought theirs yet and was going to get them through the MSU and UM ticket offices:

MICHIGAN STATE 10/25/13- Section G, Rows 9 - 16, Seats 9-16
- Section H, Rows 11-13, Seats 1-4

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN 10/26/13 - Section 23, Rows 14-23, Seats 1-8

If you didn't know, tonight's game is on Channel 263 (on Comcast in NH, at least).
