Re: UML 2013/2014 Season ... The Target is firmly on
Couldn't agree with Bob any more, that was a very painful game to watch.
Two things that had to happen for this bus to turn around; someone on the defense has to step up and be the on-ice leader. The overall defense has been rather poor; the lack of overall speed, poor decision making, and simply getting beat to puck. I understand that losing a player like Ruhwedel was going to take a substantial hit on the defensive numbers. At the same time, this has been a complete and utter meltdown: 8/12 on PK and especially 1/20 on the PP are just abysmal numbers against teams like Sacred Heart, UMass, and Qunnipiac. Where all three games are in the Tsongas Arena it's completely unacceptable for a team of their caliber. Wilson on the point during the PP is not the answer, in fact, it's actually contributing to the problem. We need someone on the point that is not afraid of letting it go and doesn't appear to have lead weights in his skates.
Secondly, the forwards (save Pendeza and Gambardella) really haven't shown me much at all this season. Too much of "Harlem Globetrotters on Ice" trying for the ESPN Top 10 play or razzle-dazzle showtime instead of going to the net and more importantly, getting to rebounds. Once again, it's appears like another slow start for some of more talented upperclassmen, where the pressure of expectations is in their minds. The Ferris Bueller quote is appropriate: Team is wound up so tight...take some coal and in two weeks you have a diamond to clean it up a bit.
I realize it's early, but this is a must-win for the River Hawks tonight. Can't afford to go down 1-3 to start the season and then embark on a trip to Michigan. Hopefully, they can answer the call.
