UML 2012 Offseason Thread: "If this is a dream, don't wake me!"

Re: UML 2012 Offseason Thread: "If this is a dream, don't wake me!"

FORTRAN is a very simple language to pick up and its structure is very straight-forward. While it's not as glamorous as some of the languages that are available today, it is still a superior language for numerical computation. It is still a fundamental tool in meteorology, chemistry, and applied mathematics. Many of the weather forecast models still are largely coded in FORTRAN.

UMass Lowell still teaches FORTRAN programming to its meteorological students. As an "Easter Egg" for my meteorological wokrstations I build, a FORTRAN 77
compiler is still available for anyone of my colleagues that requires it.

Most of the air quality dispersion models are also coded in FORTRAN and we write a number of conversion programs (**** people providing data in English units!) and post-processing programs for binary files here in the office. If I can do it Pat, it should be a breeze for you.

Alright... Just don't want to get my brain full between the parts of C that I can remember, R, SAS, Unix, LaTeX, A bit of SQL... Woof.

Excuse us for speaking nerd. :p

I see it as speaking useful ;)

This latest thing I'm working on will either make a lot of lives easier or harder in the social sciences... depends on your perspective... they can do more but the math is a bit touchy.

Preseason game is one month from today.

Great win for UML Soccer last night, beating #6 Franklin Pierce last night at home 3-2. Not as important as the U.S. win last night, but still pretty **** good. :)

Also, newest Countdown to Faceoff.

They should have checked some of the facts in this article such as that being the 1st time Lowell was in the tournament and getting their first win.

I noticed that too ...

Not hockey related, but UMass gets a $3.1b capital increase approval.

The flagship Amherst campus is getting $1.1 billion under the plan. Boston is getting $897 million; Lowell is getting more than $513 million; Dartmouth is getting $286 million; and the medical school in Worcester is getting nearly $258 million.

Sounds like some of it is already spent on projects currently underway. It mentions a previous 2.4b plan. So is this $700m more or an additional $3.1b I wonder.

Still good to see the investment.
