UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Get to follow up a good weekend with a bonus weekday game tomorrow. Don't know too much about UConn. They're 1-1-1. Went 0-1-1 against Bowling Green and then beat Army 5-0 (the same Army team that gave 'Mack a tough game in a 3-2 loss the following night).

One interesting stat is that in the 3 games they've played, they've given up a total of 131 shots (43.67 shots/game). The goalie must be decent because the Huskies are only giving up 2 goals per game. All of their other stats seem to fall within the "normal" range.

Would be nice to see the new puck possession/shoot-happy River Hawks continue to toss a ton of rubber towards the goal.

Wonder who's going to get the nod in net.

I think one can make the case that any of the three goaltenders could make the start. Robbins may get it to see what he can do after a successful debut, Carr could get it after a very solid performance on Saturday night. Boulanger could get it for the point that he wants to see all three goalies get a game before naming a #1 or #1/#2 rotation. After this weekend, we know one thing....Bazin will keep you guessing. How many people would have thought in his first game as head coach, he would have the "guts" (family friendly show here ;)) to place his recruit on the firing line where so many things could have went wrong. I didn't see that coming and a bunch of people I've talked to have said the same thing.

I'm very excited to see the game tomorrow evening but a bit concerned that this Conway event (though made with good faith and intentions in mind) could backfire, especially as they are off to the quick start. The rink seats 1000 and if they get 2000 people to show up, that's going to be a PR embarrassment. As for the game, they weren't expected to do things in Mankato and came away with a sweep. Now, the pressure is turned up a little bit to face off against UConn in a "home away from home" game and are now expected to win. It will be interesting to see if they come out with the same resolve, attitude, and at times, dominance shown in Mankato. If they are able to continue their early success leading to a potential third win in succession, the BC game could be a spectacle. It wasn't until mid-to-late January until we won our third game last season.

Lowell got 12 votes this week in the USCHO Poll. Same as New Hampshire (sliding from 15th in the poll).

8/10 HEA schools received votes. Only Amherst and Vermont did not.

Providence got 68, was 23rd in voting, and is currently first in HEA points standings.

Also, Terrence Wallin was named Hockey East Rookie of the week.

Not bad so far..
Will be interesting to see how they play against UConn and if the wheels to fall off against BC the weekend after this.

This is great.
Traditionally BC underestimates us and we over-achieve the first game. That would be a tradition I would love to keep.

Ugh... let's see what I can dredge up... the current seniors were freshmen when I was finishing up at UConn... I've heard the goalie is fairly solid... from what I can remember watching last year's QF series is they seemed to transition fairly well... I forget a lot else. Defense has been traditionally a weak point as the defensemen have been traditionally slow... if that's the case this year then I'd wonder if Valorani is going to find a way to go on a break or two. AHA teams tend to be slower than the big boys... note that most of these players tend to have little flaws that kept them from being picked up by the Big 4 conferences.

That being said, its still hockey, I believe they tied Maine up in Orono last year. Don't take them seriously and it will be a bad result. They can still set up, they can still take shots, they can still play hockey. Force breakdowns, they will occur with Bruce Marshall teams... UConn has historically has had a strong "shoot yourself in the foot" syndrome... and take nothing for granted.... taking players for granted is a good way to give up goals

Other than that, I have no real insights... its just been too long.

He says he's emailed twice.
Got it. Thanx. I never look on gmail. I had said if he gmailed me to post for me to look. I thought he was going to email me on my other email. I emailed him back.

It bounced off one of the emails so I sent it to the gmail email. I feel like this is way too much work :(

And that might have bounced too. Monty, if you don't get anything post here.. I will check in.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I might be crazy, but is anyone else starting to feel expectations about tomorrow night?

Also, any guess who's in net? At this point I wouldn't be surprised with any of the three.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I've heard Robbins will be getting the start in net tomorrow.

Personally, I think Norm coming in created more competition. Guys are fighting for roster spots because nobody is guaranteed anything. Overall I think it will help the team as everyone is hungry for their chance.

A win tomorrow would be nice momentum for opening weekend in HE

I think you need to pump your brakes a little bit here. Yes Lowell did what none of us thought they would by sweeping Mankato. But with that said, there was a lot of emotion on the bench this past weekend being Bazin's first games as HC. Also, add in the fact that Mankato is usually a pretty bad team, and Lowell probably got the proper results. Now you have a UConn team that is not a very good hockey team as well. I would say most of us chalked UConn up as a win when the schedule was released. No disrespect to UConn with that statement, but the school just doesn't really care about their hockey program like they do basketball and football.

Agreed. I can't see this team having four goalies on the roster next year, so we'll have to see how that plays out.

One thing I feel is that we'll see some roster turnover at the end of the year, some of the veterans that don't play much this year might be gone to open up some spots for kids that Bazin thinks will fit in more. We'll see.

Definitely looking for a good showing against UConn and then hope the team takes the long layover until the next game (10/28) to work on problems and get back to 100%. At that point, it's into the inferno through Thanksgiving as six of the first seven HE matchups are against big four teams (BC, @BC, BU, @Maine, @Maine, @UNH, UMass). Sure, UNH is off to a rough start, but it's still tough to get points up in Durham. Points will be hard to come by during that stretch.
