Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread
Welp, the 'Hawks certainly found their legs midway through the first.
I certainly didn't see this coming. Lowell being bad on the road, Amherst being unbeaten at home...this reeked of another tough loss. Full credit to the boys for one hell of a road win. Sounded dominate in the third period, here's hoping that play carries over as Lowell goes for the season sweep against Amherst.
The way this game began for the first 12-14 minutes, it certainly sure did look like another long night for the River Hawks. Malcolm Lyles (more on him later) took a rather bad penalty just over 90 seconds into the game. For the next 10 minutes it was all Amherst as Gracel was simply left all alone ten feet out and even an average D-I hockey player would hit that. Lowell didn't even have a shot credited to them at least according to the video board in the first eight minutes of the game. One of the key factors in the game started shortly thereafter as UMass tried to play physical against the River Hawks and it cost them by playing too aggressively and taking penalties. Personally, I think we caught a break on two of the penalties. Finally, they were able to catch in on their fourth chance of the first period (the final seven minutes were much better) with a tip-in from Holmstrom to knot the game at one for a very key point in the game.
The second and third periods were some of the best hockey I've seen on the road since the Maine game. I wouldn't say Lowell dominated the entire time, but definitely had the better of the play. UMass, however, did has some good chances and it was like a playoff game with some really high-quality hockey from both sides of the ice for the final 40. The breakaway pass by Wallin to Pendenza was highlight-reel only a couple of minutes after Carr made an unbelievable stick save at our end. The second marker of the period, again in the last two minutes was crucial by Holmstrom from within a scrum.
One thing UMass did right was score on both of the PP afforded to them and of concern, both were at the end of the PP. I'm sure Doug Carr would like to have that second one back (from my angle it was a five-hole special that leaked through) after a blatant trip by Wallin. Two bad UMass penalties in the third really cost the Minuteman although Mastalerz made a scintillating save on a Lowell shot at the end of the second PP with only three minutes to go. However, we really started to run around at the end of the PP for about 45 seconds and I really wanted Bazin to call a timeout which he did with a little over two minutes to go to reinforce fundamentals. It worked because Lowell did dominate the final 90 seconds, which got them a goal and the two points for the win. The puck possession was so good, they couldn't pull Mastalerz and Val's goal was with him still in the net.
Things I enjoyed watching...Riley Wetmore appears to be back, had a monster game with two assists. Best game I've seen him play in a month. Josh Holmstrom with his two goals also had another big game and most of the River Hawks were on the same page once they got their legs under them.
Things I did not enjoyed watching...Two PP goals against & Malcolm Lyles....he struggled mightily tonight (keeping to my policy of decorum). Two bad penalties (one leading to a goal), was constantly beat to the puck, and a host of bad decisions. Just tries to do too much while out there. Would not be surprised if he doesn't play tomorrow night.
Two huge points to keep us in the home ice hunt and we're getting closer to an official return to the playoffs. The magic number in pts is now down to 5 to clinch at least ninth and 10 for a playoff spot. Vermont could be mathematically eliminated from home ice as early as Sunday.
