Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

If nothing else tomorrow night, it could be an offensive game (as in scoring and hopefully not outcome)

I don't know why but I wanted to take a look at Shots on Goal for league games at the Mullins Center

BU: 2-2 UMass outshoots BU 35-23
BC: 4-2 BC outshoots UMass 26-23
NU: 4-2 UMass outshoots NU 43-35
ME: 2-2 UMass outshoots Maine 37-31
BC: 4-0 BC outshoots UMass 35-19
VT: 4-3 UMass outshoots UVM 41-38

Other than the BC games, they are getting off 35 or more shots on net at the Mullins Center in league games at home. That's a pretty significant stat for a team that history has shown likes to play a conservative, defensive-minded game. Granted, I don't have the shot charts to see how many of these are high-quality, but definitely should be a major key and something to look for with tomorrow's night game. I'll get to see for myself as I'm heading to the Zoo tomorrow.

BTW, when we played UMA in November, the shots were 34-16 Lowell. We know how that wound up. :D ;)

Just wanted to give kudos to the new sound system for the radio station. It sounded awesome last game- didn't drop and oodles clearer!!

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

The HE picks are once again saying a home/home split this weekend. Loved this line from Hendrickson:
Dave’s pick: After the Minutemen play like Supermen at home, they hop on the bus to Kryptonite Arena.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Nice line yep. Since we can't win on the road and rock at home, one of the safer picks.

Here's hoping someone in the UML lockerroom packed the kryptonite to take with them tonight.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Now I think you're just trying to jinx us. :(
Are you referring to my prediction for the Providence game? Yeah, I guess I was a little off on that one. But, anyway, I'm not trying to jinx you. You guys have a good team.

That said, next weekend I'll be pulling out all the stops trying to jinx you. ;)

Hoping for the best tonight. Hopefully the Hawks have more jump then they did on Tuesday night.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

This has been pretty bad so far ... Lowell is tied at 1, but it took four first period power plays to do it. Even with four power plays (to one for UMass), Lowell only outshot Amherst 13-10.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Bob is cracking me up tonight. He has called the "flagship" UMass, UMass-Amherst, Amherst and Massachusetts! 2-1 Lowell as I type this.

3-1 after two. Pendenza put the Hawks ahead with a breakaway goal, and Holmstrom added his second of the night with 99 seconds left in the period. Lowell is 1-5 on the power play, UMass is 1-1. Of course, their fans are complaining about the refs, and I'm not there, so I have no idea if the calls are/aren't legit. Lowell's being outshot 26-24.

Massive shots on net as predicted. With the 4th game in 7 nights I don't care how they do it or if it is pretty. Just score and hold em off.

Exactly. I received a text at 8:26PM from a friend of mine who is a legit UMass hockey fan. The text was simply: Game. Is. Over.

I reminded him that Lowell has a knack of blowing 2 goal leads.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Welp, the 'Hawks certainly found their legs midway through the first.

I certainly didn't see this coming. Lowell being bad on the road, Amherst being unbeaten at home...this reeked of another tough loss. Full credit to the boys for one hell of a road win. Sounded dominate in the third period, here's hoping that play carries over as Lowell goes for the season sweep against Amherst.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Overall, decent game, but it definitely started poorly and improved as the night went on. Need to build on that (without the poor start) on Saturday night.

First part of a sweep is winning the first game, so we've got that. C'mon Hawks!

The way this game began for the first 12-14 minutes, it certainly sure did look like another long night for the River Hawks. Malcolm Lyles (more on him later) took a rather bad penalty just over 90 seconds into the game. For the next 10 minutes it was all Amherst as Gracel was simply left all alone ten feet out and even an average D-I hockey player would hit that. Lowell didn't even have a shot credited to them at least according to the video board in the first eight minutes of the game. One of the key factors in the game started shortly thereafter as UMass tried to play physical against the River Hawks and it cost them by playing too aggressively and taking penalties. Personally, I think we caught a break on two of the penalties. Finally, they were able to catch in on their fourth chance of the first period (the final seven minutes were much better) with a tip-in from Holmstrom to knot the game at one for a very key point in the game.

The second and third periods were some of the best hockey I've seen on the road since the Maine game. I wouldn't say Lowell dominated the entire time, but definitely had the better of the play. UMass, however, did has some good chances and it was like a playoff game with some really high-quality hockey from both sides of the ice for the final 40. The breakaway pass by Wallin to Pendenza was highlight-reel only a couple of minutes after Carr made an unbelievable stick save at our end. The second marker of the period, again in the last two minutes was crucial by Holmstrom from within a scrum.

One thing UMass did right was score on both of the PP afforded to them and of concern, both were at the end of the PP. I'm sure Doug Carr would like to have that second one back (from my angle it was a five-hole special that leaked through) after a blatant trip by Wallin. Two bad UMass penalties in the third really cost the Minuteman although Mastalerz made a scintillating save on a Lowell shot at the end of the second PP with only three minutes to go. However, we really started to run around at the end of the PP for about 45 seconds and I really wanted Bazin to call a timeout which he did with a little over two minutes to go to reinforce fundamentals. It worked because Lowell did dominate the final 90 seconds, which got them a goal and the two points for the win. The puck possession was so good, they couldn't pull Mastalerz and Val's goal was with him still in the net.

Things I enjoyed watching...Riley Wetmore appears to be back, had a monster game with two assists. Best game I've seen him play in a month. Josh Holmstrom with his two goals also had another big game and most of the River Hawks were on the same page once they got their legs under them.

Things I did not enjoyed watching...Two PP goals against & Malcolm Lyles....he struggled mightily tonight (keeping to my policy of decorum). Two bad penalties (one leading to a goal), was constantly beat to the puck, and a host of bad decisions. Just tries to do too much while out there. Would not be surprised if he doesn't play tomorrow night.

Two huge points to keep us in the home ice hunt and we're getting closer to an official return to the playoffs. The magic number in pts is now down to 5 to clinch at least ninth and 10 for a playoff spot. Vermont could be mathematically eliminated from home ice as early as Sunday.
