Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Unfortunately, the MBTA may be eliminating weekend commuter rail service as a cost cutting measure. There would also be no service after 10pm on weekdays. Even if they do not eliminate the service, it's likely that fares will increase substantially.

I'd rather see a fare increase than no service at all. I'd like to know how the MBTA can propose something like this when there are thousands of sports fans that rely on the T to get them to the Garden, Fenway, and Gillette. Even going in on weekdays, are they going to get stranded because there are no trains after 10:00 PM? I can see it now, a mass exodus from the Garden during a game (third period, second half) because fans need to get on the T to get home.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Small screwup by Jim Connelly in this week's USCHO column which just amused me:
• Hockey East got a bit more international when Massachusetts-Lowell announced the addition of Russian blueliner Dmitry Sinitsyn. Sinitsyn, who had visa issues in coming to the U.S. this year, will become the youngest player in Division I if he takes the ice this season. Lowell is hardly a stranger to bringing over players from Italy. Between 1998 and 2003, three players from France graced the River Hawks lineup: Yorick Trielle, Laurent Meunier and Baptiste Amar. All three played for the French Olympic team at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City.
Not surprisingly, both Dave and Jim are picking the home teams this weekend.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Too easy.

Like I said in the game thread, Lowell has to take care of business against the garbage teams in Hockey East. They threw away two points in Vermont, but they responded nicely after finally playing their first real home game in over a month.

No let up tonight. Northeastern will come out on fire, I'm sure. 'Hawks need to wether the storm, take control and put these dogs down for the last time.

Lowell rules.

Lowell needs to have a good showing tonight against a team they put in their place yesterday. A good road win will set them in a good mindset going into PC on Tuesday. Lowell needs to be better then the 3-4 on the road in HE to take a home ice slot.

While PC got embarrassed at BU, they have proven they are not a road team. PC has shown they can stop the bleeding at home with a 5-2-1 HE home record at the moment. We will see how they respond tonight.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I'm not looking to PC yet ... this is an important game tonight, not just for the two-points, but to win yet another season series. A win tonight puts Lowell 8 points up on NU, with three games in hand ... in other words, it completely buries NU in regards to catching up to Lowell.

Wonderful game last night, and I had a blast, as did my puppies ... would love to do it again.

I agree Monty. Last night was great but this game is huge. The Hawks will need to bring the same effort and then some tonight.

I thought Shayne Thompson did a nice job an defense last night. I have to admit I was surprised to see him back there instead of Lyles or Corcoran. Are they hurt?

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Same here. I thought that we played well but they also had long periods of time in our zone and some really bad puck luck. Carr was huge. He saved us more than once.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Last night was a complete effort by the River Hawks perhaps not seen since the last home game against BC in December. Doug Carr was on a mission last night and his confidence early sparked his teammates in putting the game away in that second period. This was the first semester team that we love to see take the ice in every game.

Obviously, the two points offered in this game is the table setter that the last three posters have wrote. A 4-0 win is solid but doesn't mean much if you lose by any margin tonight as Northeastern would take the season series and possibly give a game back to Maine and Merrimack for the final two home ice spots. Take advantage of burying Northeastern tonight and then focus on Providence for Tuesday.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Mrs. GoUML surprised me with tickets to last night's game and it's the first one I've been to since the UAH game over Thanksgiving. Northeastern was very strong physically (which seemed like a big problem when listening to the first UML-NU game on the radio this year) but Lowell moved the puck very well. Watching the controlled, speedy break out of the defensive zone and through the neutral zone is very fun to watch and every time Wilson touches the puck, something good happens. NU did have a lot of offensive zone pressure but as lots of people have said above, Carr was making some great saves and did a good job sending most rebounds out of the slot.

Matthews is a tough place to play so hoping for another strong performance all around tonight. Nice to have a shot at 4 points in a weekend.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I haven't looked at the roster but NU has some very big boys like you said

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Need the 2 points tonight. After we play Providence on Tuesday we will have played the same amount of Hockey East games as UMass. That home and home against them is huge.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Lowell currently tied for third in the Pairwise with tOSU. Can't have a letup this week against PC and Amherst.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Wow, I've said it before, you guys are studs! I'm so jealous! :D I can only hope we come back strong like you guys next season.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

One question I had for Hawks fans. I noticed the Bazin was playing with the first line alot last night, including the starters. Normally you will see Wetmore, Val and Arnold. He had Pendeza, Ferreira and Arnold out there on numerous occasions. Has anyone else seen that? Also, Thompson was playing defense?!? I didnt understand that one. No Lyles and Corcoran.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Congrats to the River Hawks for another four-point league playoff weekend, which I believe it's the third one of the season. After a lackluster performance in Vermont, the River Hawks came back with two key victories against a team on paper that they should beat. How many times before over the past 15 years have we seen the River Hawks not being able to come back from a bad loss only to have it snowball on them. A lot of people I trust (here and offline) mentioned that the River Hawks played rather loose last night, especially towards the end. I'm sure part of that was desperation of the Huskies knowing that the season could be on the line. Lowell certainly ended NU's realistic chances of home ice, and by the same token, has almost assured us that we will be back in the Hockey East Playoffs in March. Still waiting for highlights on HE Online. :D

Maine actually did the River Hawks a favor this past weekend by sweeping BC as now the River Hawks are just three points from the both of them with four games in hand. With a solid performance this week, the River Hawks could be on track in the running for more than just a #4 seeding. I do have to give credit to BU and Merrimack, the former for absolutely smoking PC this weekend to the surprise of many and to the Warriors for stealing yet another two points this season in OT. The UNH kitty-cats really needed a four-point weekend to get them back into the home ice race.

All I can say about the PC game is I really don't know what to expect. Lowell really hasn't had a good solid game down there for a very long time and after getting embarrassed by BU by a margin of 14-1 this weekend, I'm sure the Friars are going to be looking for quick redemption. Both teams will be playing their third game in five days; I'm hoping for a win but would not be disappointed by taking a point in a tie either. No matter what happens on Tuesday, they have to go right back and play a rested Minuteman whom haven't lose on their home ice this season and had a full week off w/o travel. I'm purely speculating on the Lyles and Corcoran thing but maybe it is to keep some guys fresh as they do have this stretch of five games in nine days.

I think by the end of next weekend, we will have a good idea on the seeding. There is separation finally starting to take place and if the River Hawks can "close escrow" this week, I think we will be very happy looking at the "dividends".

Well a four point weekend ... never sucks.

It wasn't pretty in the third period last night. NU really kept the pressure on and Lowell looked like they had no legs left. A nice bounce in OT and a nice finish by Derek Arnold to get the weekend sweep. Hopefully the Hawks will be ready to go Tuesday night after a tough weekend series. I believe classes start this week too.
