Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Here's the thing guys... w/o any analysis... It's hockey... Any given night any team... There is absolutely no sense in believing home advantage is going to confer that much extra unless there is a good reason (last change, wise zamboni operator, crowd). Bottom line, in hockey, after talent, is self confidence/belief. It's that line of thought that allows you to chase that last puck. That's the only concession I'll make to Blaise's whole person dictum. Self-belief is half the battle in a sport where the game of"inches" comes up so more frequently than the other ball sports.

This why I don't fear Maine... It's mostly self-constructed... Especially when their fanbase is down on themselves... Not like the bad old days of Jimi St. John flipping off the Maine students.

We can do a lot of great things so long as we let go of the superstitions that hold us back.

I think Maine is hot so their fans are back on board. They just hate the coach.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I'll admit, listening to the game, that first period I thought Lowell were in a ton of trouble. How they responded in the second and third though was impressive. And for a change, they played a great third period, it's been too long since we've see than.

Let's hope for the sweep tonight. Going into tonight, there's 5 points separating Lowell (in 5th place) from 1st place BU. Lowell is one point behind Merrimack for the final home ice spot, and they've played the same amount of games. Maine is 2 points up on Lowell, BC 3 points, but Lowell has 3 games on both teams, and has 2 games on BU. This is just setting up for one of the most important UML/MC weekends in a long long time, which is fantastic for the Merrimack River rivalry.

BTW, the highlights are up on the HE site ... very choppy in regards to timing of a couple of things, and it's definitely a UMass feed as they only showed one of the UML goals.

Not sure if anyone else has seen the "highlight" video from the game last night. What a hack production job that was. It only shows the Pendenza goal (twice, might I add), ignoring the other three. However it does pay special attention to a couple of calls that the folks at UMass apparently considered egregious.

FWIW the goaltender interference call was correct. Yes, he was pushed in. Being pushed in doesn't mean you get to launch yourself of your on volition into the goalie.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

It's astounding to think of where this team has come to out of the ashes of last year. Not only the win/loss record. Not only where they are in the standings. Having won the season series Northeastern, UMass, UNH and Maine. Only lost to BC for a season series, but a game back on UVM and Providence (with two games left against each, 2 at home against UVM). Leading the season series over BU with two left, and of course, 3 huge games left against MC.

No matter what happens this year, just huge credit to Coach Bazin and his staff. There's no doubt in my mind that if this kind of play continues, he's going to be adding the National Coach of the Year to his resume, and considering he's a UML alum, you have to feel that he's here for a while. Enjoy every moment this year folks, this has been a fun ride.

More to the point, its a young team... losing Valorani will hurt... but, I mean seriously, what does next year look like at this point? That being said, we can still miss the NCAAs easily so its still a fight to the end... but that they've made it a fight is remarkable. Still, you'd have to think the fresh/sophs won't lack for confidence in their time.

We need this game tonight. Three of the top teams in the standings play someone from the bottom five of the standings over the next two days. If all of the "favorites" hold tonight and tomorrow afternoon, it's pretty much going to isolate teams 6-10. I'd like to see 5250 or higher in the barn tonight.

I'm looking at the games for today for some great story lines.

Both Maine and BC play their 20th league games of the season tonight. If either or both should slip, especially BC, that could be interesting.
Maine @ BU (Game 2): If Maine does pull off the sweep, it's going to be a wild February and really get Jack upset just in time for the Beanpot. Not sure I want the Terriers upset come the BU Invitational.
BC@Moo-N-H: Final boarding call for the kitty-cats, if they lose tonight the only streak they should be worrying about is making the HE playoffs.
NU @ UVM: Speaking of kitty-cats, a double kitty-cat sweep would be that both feline teams are out of the playoffs as of tonight.

Which leads me to tomorrow: PC @ Merrimack. PC has already won the season series and is going for the sweep. UML can place so much pressure on Merrimack by winning tonight and we may having sole control of that #4 seed again if the Warriors slip up. Then again, if the Warriors win and Lowell's should slip up, that would put Maine back in 4th with the two Vermont games meaning a lot. Monty's right, all three games of the Merrimack series arguably could be considered the most important games these two teams have played in the D-I era. Someone of the top five teams is going to be left out right now, and it's impossible to say who that team is. I'm sure the team will be watching the game tomorrow on TV, WBIN -- 4 PM.

This is going to be fun...haven't had this much fun since, well 1996 :D

The third goal (Holmstrom's second and the eventual game-winner) was actually an own goal. Holmstrom threw it in front from the corner and the UMass d-man went to block it with his skate and actually kicked it right into the net. Not surprised UMass didn't want to include that one on the highlights.

Especially with all of the things that the senior class has had to go through, facing program extinction as recruits, the high of the 2009 HE run, the debacles of the 2009 HE championship, the bitter ending to the 2010 and embarrassment of the 2011 season. Now, they have an excellent chance at a 20-win season, home-ice in the playoffs and who knows what else. Still a long way to go but if Lowell finishes the regular season with home-ice, the HE Coach of the Year will be a joke if Bazin isn't a unanimous choice. I'll let the whatever national stuff wait until March because I'm living in the moment. Eight of the final eleven at home; I'm just praying that the community rewards this team by getting the attendance they deserve over this stretch run to push them over the top and gain that elusive home-ice spot for the playoffs. I gave them the benefit of the doubt last night and it seemed to work...that must have been a fun bus ride home last night for them and knowing they have three weeks of home games...it could be yum-yum land for the River Hawks if they keep it up. They went 2-2 on the road trip as I mentioned on Tuesday, sure not perfect, but I'll take .500 on the road and move on.

Hard to believe, but this weekend is the 14th anniversary of the Tsongas Arena...it's been that long since school :p

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I can't find the **** spot I saw this, but UML (for a few of the UML hockey games and basketball games in February) will be crediting students with "points" for each game they go to. Also, if they tweet or put stuff on Facebook, with the student with the highest point total getting an iPad, and other gifts as well along the way. Another great promotional idea, and especially because it brings in the students.

On fb. I got an invite from Scot via email. Liked the page and all that stuff popped up.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

The shifts in the PWR on a night to night basis are ridiculous. Lowell goes from t3 after the NU sweep, drops to t9 after the PC loss, and now in 3rd by themselves again with the win over Amherst.

On another note, a win tonight will give this team 8 out of 10 points in the most hellish part of the schedule. Would be fantastic to see. Just hope they have their legs tonight.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Wasn't pretty for all six periods during the weekend (especially yesterday) but an excellent four point weekend. Huge couple games against UVM next weekend, including the Saturday NESN game.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

What is this grow one for Dougie all about? The guy in the gorilla suit was a riot.

and I concur- Amherst was some kind of awful for us to beat them by that score cos it looked like no one was doing good enough to win.

Boy did they choke on the whistles all night except for the little flurry in the 3rd.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

FB page encouraging everyone not to shave 'For Dougie' until the end of the season.
