Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Looking at the HE league only stats ... Doug Carr is second in GAA, second in win %, and 4th in save percentage.

Four forwards are tied for 25th in Hockey East in points; Wilson, Pendanza, Ferreira and Vallorani, all with 7 points. Of course, everyone above them has played more games, except for one Merrimack player who has 8 points in the same amount of games played.

At this point 25% of the way through the league season, Lowell has a leg up on winning the season series against BU, UMass and has won the series against Maine. They're in the whole against UNH, but will have two shots at them in just over a week and a half.

UML is also fourth in home attendance in league play.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Good weekend. Would be nice to take some points from UNH but, like many have said, the team's early success and good press masks the fact that it's less than a year from the worst season ever.

Was worried after the Maine series and the UNH game because Lowell didn't seem to control the puck as well as it did in previous games and shot totals were way down. Not complaining after being 2-1 in that stretch but was happy to see posession, a flurry of shots, and an easy day for Carr on Saturday.

CHN's recap of Lowell's weekend.

I think the Amherst game has been fairly covered, but I'll say this. That was the first time in awhile where I've seen a Lowell team lay an egg on one night to come back with a throughly dominating performance on the night after.

Some more gems (through seven league games)..

2011 HE GFPG: 3.57 2010 HE GFPG: 2.14 Difference= 1.43
2011 HE GAPG: 3.14 2010 HE GFPG: 4.00 Difference= -.86

Adding the two differences together means that there has been a +2.29 total goal differential  in Hockey East games this season. That's close to performing a miracle in this league to be higher than 1.5, let alone well over 2.0.

Like I said in an earlier post, Lowell has far exceeded my (and I'm sure most people's) expectations during this first semester. Take care of Alabama-Huntsville first, then focus on the remaining HE schedule with three more consecutive games against the Big Four, then a faceoff against NU. At least two of the three games against BC/UNH are at home and if they can split each of those two weekends by gaining four points, Lowell will be in a much more desirable position compared to last season.

I would assume Brian Robbins gets the start on Friday against Alabama-Huntsville. The kid needs to get a true home start for a change and some confidence with the team. At the same time, Doug Carr really needs to start all four of these upcoming Hockey East games. We have an enormous advantage right now with games in hand over the bottom half of the league. Carr has clearly established himself as this team's best chance in the short term in being this team #1 netminder. The #1 priority has to be putting some distance between this Hockey East muck of team in the middle to bottom of the standings so that come playoff time, we aren't concerned about getting that final seed in the playoffs.

The Amherst game was definitely good all around. It's satisfying to see sustained pressure and actual goal scoring, not coming "oh so close" every time.

Looking at UAH's schedule, they've lost every single game except a 1-1 with Air Force. They're going to likely get steamrolled by Lowell, but do you still start Robbins? I want Lowell to keep the throttle on against these weak OOC teams and not squeak by like they did in last year's Bentley game 8-5. Like UConn earlier, this is UAH's Super Bowl (albeit all three of their games this week are) and I'm sure they want to prove something to their administration when they take to the ice against these Hockey East teams. I say Carr starts as much as he's able to, it's not like they have the two games this weekend. Plenty of time to rest up. ;)

If Bazin is serious about not having settled on a #1 yet, this game has to be Robbins. If nothing else, the kid needs some confidence and this is the kind of game that he has to win if he does want to still be considered for playing time as the year goes along.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Games like these are all about how seriously your team takes them. It's a character check, basically. Are they lazy? Trying for a three point play? Etc.

I would expect Robbins in net or expect it to be a half and half night. Games like these are usually between the ears.

Let's hope the Hawks are ready to go. The UConn game should be a good reminder, and the scores from last night too.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Merrimack made the Chargers look like the Washington Generals tonight; it was a flat-out embarassment. They called off the dogs with 4:00 minutes to play in the second and still put up 48 shots. Had they played to their full potential, they would have put up a ten-spot on them. Friday is a game we should win by at least three.

Happy Turkey Day!

Made the trip up to strip mall territory last night too. Merrimack clearly out-played UAH, the Chargers could barely get the puck out of their end to make line changes. That said, once it became 3-0 less than 10 minutes in the game, UAH put Clarke Saunders in and he almost single-handedly kept it from becoming a ten-spot kind of game. Kid made some incredible stops. Lowell should expect to see him in net on Friday after his performance.

Also, apparently UML alum Scott Capraro made his Hockey East ref debut last night. That one must have slipped by Bertagna.. How does Hockey East allow a former Lowell player in its refereeing ranks? Is this a trap?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I'm going through an unchartered part of PG County on a train... hold me.

Just to convert that for the folks at home, traveling the DC Metro Green, Blue, and/or Orange Line through Prince George's County at any time of day can be like taking the Ashmont train to its destination at 11:45 PM. For someone who has also done that numerous times, be safe!

My friends and I made the mistake of taking the light rail from airport to Baltimore harbor district a few years back when going to an ND-Navy game. Needless to say, I saw things I hope I never see again. Made me not mind the drunk homeless guys chanting about Jesus and the like on the orange line on way to the TD Garden.

Baltimore's MTA from the Airport to Downtown is another train you need to be really careful. However, it's not as bad some of the stuff I've seen on the DC Metro.

yeah... i've seen some gang beatdowns and stuff.... usually its all harmless things... but occasionally.... remember seeing a roving fight work up and down the woodley park metro stop... red is usually safe though.

Things are unlikely to go wrong, but you always need to keep one eye peeled just in case.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Enough about Baltimore and DC's rapid transit. Ever taken the Red Line in Boston? :D

I've decided to go to the UAH game (solo). If you see a guy in a red fleece with a UML scarf, that would be me.

I take it you mean the southern spoke or something? The worst I've ever gotten from Alewife to the station switch (forget the name, Haymarket?) are hipsters.

I'd take the Red Line in Boston over any of those train lines.

Back to the game, how many people will show today. Merrimack got another "sellout" which in hindsight may be pretty legit although the student section was far from capacity. So today's over/under (for entertainment purposes only)...will Lowell do better than 2487.

My gut says less, but somehow the announced will be over that ... see you at Beerworks!
