Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

I wondered if this can be considered an omen. I was reading Jim Connelly's blog post about Maine being at the crossroads when something caught my eye. There was an ad on the left side of the page for people to buy tickets for the Men's Frozen Four. The image inside that ad was of a Lowell goalie (maybe Roloson). The reason why I say that is because the shirt image was an old Lowell jersey. Didn't Roloson play in the NCAA tournament? So would anyone else consider this an omen after the way Lowell has been playing thus far?

You know, I, as much as anyone else, would like to believe. It could be that Blaise had the talent but didnt know what to do with them. I'd consider it a small miracle if we made the NCAAs. That being said, I think we play way too sloppy and we will take a few 3+ goal defeats.

That being said, if we keep putting in the effort that should speak volumes. Attitude is a lot of the sport. It's good that we've beaten a few of the traditional powers but I'd rather wait for the 20 game mark before we start dreaming about such things. It's a young squad, there is aways to go and everybody else will learn and adapt to what we are doing

Not sure about omens but Roloson was HE player of the year in the '93/'94 season. Lowell finished 2nd in HE, lost the HE final to BU, then beat Michigan State in the 1st round of the NCAA's. Lost a heartbreaker to Minnesota in OT in the next round. That was my senior year and that was one of the best Lowell teams of all time. Shane Henry, Greg Bullock, Dwayne Roloson, and of course Norm Bazin!

I'm thrilled with the way the team is playing this season. All our talk last season about the team giving up under Blaise seems to be true. Nothing against Blaise as I had nothing against the guy. Just seems the team needed a change and Norm was the right guy. Having an alum as coach goes a long way in college sports.

That was my sophomore year, I remember that well.

And your second paragraph is spot on.

I don't think I'm going to even consider the NCAAs at this point. My goal for this team is still to make the HE playoffs. They're giving themselves a chance, and in all honesty, that's all we can really ask for considering how bad last year was.

I'm not even thinking about the NCAA's. That is crazy talk. I have raised my expectations to a 5th or 6th place finish in Hockey East. That would be an excellent result for this young Lowell team.

BTW: Did anyone watch BU embarrass BC yesterday? No doubt that BC is a really good team but getting shutout at home after losing to UMass isn't good. Hockey East is like the AFC right now as anyone can beat anyone.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Lowell picks up some more votes and moves up to 24th in the country. Also, Merrimack is now #2 in the country behind Minnesota, but has more first place votes (25 to 20).

Who would've thunk it?

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

A rejuvenated Lowell team that sweeps Maine and equals their win total from one season ago along with a Merrimack team ranked #2 in the country.. Wondering if the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce will be putting River Hawk and Warrior college hockey schedules in their Christmas Cards :D :p ;)

I wholly agree with Patman and Monty's comments. It's been a hell of a great ride thus far this season but there are still 22 games against the rest of the league. Sure, it's glad to see them team doing better than anyone expected, but let's make sure that we get into the Hockey East playoffs this season first before talking about home ice, NCAA's berths, or championships. BC and Merrimack are done with HE games until December and Lowell will give back some of the games in hand this weekend. We are presented with a quality chance of getting out of the muck of teams in the middle with a Wildcats team that may be getting back on track and an Amherst team that we really need to beat on home ice after last year's dismal showing against the Minuteman. Personally, I think the most important thing for the River Hawks this weekend is a good showing of 5000+ in Tsongas as the reward for playing some of the top-echelon teams as well has they have during the early portion what was perceived by pundits and fans alike as a doomsday schedule.

I will say this, knowing that we already have a season series and tiebreaker against UMaine is very intriguing. Boston College and Merrimack are in the driver's seat to not only a playoff, but also a home-ice spot. Other that that, HE is in a free-for-all that I don't expect anything to change from now until the end of the season.

This is my number one goal also. The past two weekends have been great, but as usual it will all come down to how they do against the bottom half of the league (UMA, PC, NU and UVM). The UMA game is huge for that and other reasons. Hey, who thought they would already have 6 league points and own the tie breaker with Maine when they saw that schedule? So far so good, and if they can keep playing well they should have a good shot most weekend.

Any updates on Brickler and Conderman?

Lost a heartbreaker to Minnesota in OT in the next round.
Wasn't that double OT against a rested Minnesota team? ;)

Yep. Remember the days when 12 teams made the tournament and a team like Lowell was sent to the West Regional in East Lansing to play the hosts? Then when they win they play a team that had a bye.

They did that two straight times. In '94, the one you're remembering and '96, when I went out there. We beat Michigan State both times. In '96, we wound up losing to CC, who had the bye.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

What does everyone think of the changes made at Tsongas this season? I'm not talking fried dough or the beer selection. Increasing the size behind the net to 15 feet was a huge decision. Was the decision made because of Bazin and his disdain for dump and chase hockey?

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

BTW on another note, I was looking up some HE info for a discussion I was having and was saddened to realize that Lowell is the only team this millenium in HE to not make the tournament. Lowell's last time (as mentioned before) was '96. Providence was last in the NCAAs in 2001. All the other programs have been in the tournament in the last 5 years.

Typical Lowell team. When they are good they get sent thousands of miles away to win the 1st game and lose the 2nd to a rested team. I forgot to mention that I feel sorry for the Revs this season. Sorry Monty.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Apparently it was the thing to do over the last few months. UML won 5 games last year, so did the Revs.

Hopefully this changes in the next few years.

Slightly off topic, does anyone know when the UConn Classic tickets go on sale?
