Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

sounds like you guys took it to BC all weekend. probably deserved a lot better than 0 points. from the brief highlights on HEonline, Bazin looked to have the boys buzzing last night at home. you always play BC tough, but usually its a grind things to a halt counterattack style. much more of an offensive attack this weekend. things are definitely looking up.

who is robbins and why did he start?

Robbins is a goaltender that was brought into the mix this year. Know that he played for an awful junior team but had some pretty decent stats all things considered. That's about all I know.

As to why he started, the only person that knows that is Bazin. He's had three starts now, including an exhibition game and Bazin has been going with him and Carr. In my book, Carr is the #1 goalie, however, I don't think there's any doubt now that Bazin is favoring him as the #2 goalie in lieu of Boulanger, who relieved Robbins on Saturday night. Consistent goaltending is going to be key if the River Hawks are to make the playoffs this season and from what I've seen in four of the first five games this season, it may be their #1 problem or co-problem with an inexperienced defense.

BTW, the Merrimack Valley was absolutely hammered in the snowstorm. There may be delayed responses by a lot of the River Hawk Crew since a lot of people up here are powerless.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

Some good news tonight for the University with regards to "hockey". After being down 2-0 in the contest, the women's field hockey team exacted revenge on Merrimack College with a 3-2 comeback win tonight, are the 2011 NE-10 Champions, and earn an auto-bid as the #2N seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady River Hawks will host AIC at Cushing Field at 1:00 PM Saturday in the National Quarterfinals and the winner of this game will move onwards to face Merrimack on Nov 11 in the National Semifinal.

Is it me, or is the rivalry with Merrimack starting to come back again in all sports.

Awesome comeback for UML field hockey. Although they've had more challenges this year than last, I think they have to be a favorite for the NCAA championship again.

UML basketball starts up with an exhibition game against Providence this weekend. Lowell is ranked #1 in the NE-10 coach's preseason poll. Merrimack is ranked #5 but the two teams have had some amazing matchups in the playoffs and NCAA tournament. Definitely agree that the Lowell/Merrimack rivalry is building in other sports.

Should be interesting to see how Lowell fares against BU this weekend. If they can hang on with BC, I think they'll give BU a good run for their money. Just have to find a way to put all those shots on net IN THE NET and get more consistent goaltending going.

I'd think they won't be the favorite, but hell, they've got a shot. Not bad considering all the talent they lost to graduation. Definitely a great coach in Hlebichuck.

UML is also ranked #10 nationally in the Sporting News preseason poll.

Agreed ... this would be a great way to get the first HE win. With the "bring a friend" promotion for season ticket holders, hopefully we'll have another good crowd.

Also today, both men's and women's soccer have NE-10 playoff games. Due to the weather, they were to host both games today at home, but I believe due to the field being unplayable, the #3 seed women will host their game at Merrimack at 12:30 this afternoon against #6 SNHU, while the #3 men host (at SNHU) at 1pm against #6 Southern Connecticut.

I would say that any of the PA schools would be the favorite in the tourney, but that's why they play the games.

BU can be lights-out or watch-out in the games I've watched this year on TV. Hard to say what to expect on Saturday but a win with a good crowd would do wonders for the psyche of the team/fans and reduce the pressure of the UMA home game in two and a half weeks.

As of 10 PM last night when I passed by the University, there was no power anywhere within the neighborhood. That's why the fields are unplayable.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

UML Women's Soccer lost today 2-1 to SNHU in the NE-10 Quarters.

Men's Soccer just won 1-0 over Southern Connecticut to make it to the NE-10 Semis. What a turnaround for that program under Coach Figueroa.

This game is also the annual Alumni Appreciation Night where they sold advance tickets for $5. There should be plenty of alumni in attendance.

$5 tickets? Where?

I suppose I should get them sooner rather than later... don't want to call them during work though

edit: does the Tsongas Center not use ticketmaster?

They no longer use ticketmaster. I believe they now use a system that is linked to one of Global Spectrum's sister companies.

I had received a postcard from the Alumni Association about this offer.

Re: UML 2011/2012 Season Thread

A new NBC Sports TV deal, another game added to Frozen Fenway and, per usual, Lowell isn't involved at all. As disgusted as I am, it's not a shock. Bertagna's contempt for Lowell is obvious and well known. I would like to hear Dana or Marty weigh in on the matter publicly. How they can sit back while Hockey East pretends Lowell doesn't exist makes zero sense to me.

I can makes sense of Lowell not being on tv this year, even though in a perfect world each team would get a game. But to add another game to the Fenway lineup and give teams a second go when MC, PC and Lowell haven't gotten one is unacceptable. The kicker of course being that UMass (1994) and Vermont (2005) get a game while Lowell, an original member, doesn't. Par for the course, Bertagna, you absolute idiot.
