umlfan-

thanks for thinking about me! nice to get a "must win" against merrimack. it's sad that is what it's come to. heard blaise interviewed for the nashoba tech head job on thursday. he's one of 3 finalists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now that Lowell won both games this weekend, we don't have to listen to this deusche bag for a bit. And it's such a shame because he adds so much.

Back to hockey. Very well played game by Lowell last night. I was a bit disappointed to see that they came out a bit flat to start off the third, but giving up the tying goal seemed to wake the boys up and Lowell dominated the rest of the game. Every 50/50 puck was won by Lowell, they just fought to not lose. This was a game that Lowell's players wanted to win ... and they did.

Great win. Great job River Hawks. Wonderful 4 point weekend.

Thanks for taking one for the team. Sorry you didn't hear about our result.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

If they want to win, the defense has to play their best game of the year, and I'll make the argument that they haven't done that yet. I'm hoping for a crowd of 5000-5500 tonight in the "Tsongas Center", where the River Hawks are undefeated :D ;) :p
So John ... you were saying? ;)

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

Great game to be at last night. Seeing the look on all those phony BC fans when Lowell scored the go ahead goal was worth the price of admission! Now let's all head down to NU Friday and take over Matthews!

It would be nice to get the season sweep. As I had said going into this weekend, home ice still was a possibility and this was a good weekend. I loved the response after BC tied it. I know York isn't happy about the two non-goals, but as far as I could see the second was the right call. I wasn't back at my seat for the first, but the people around me said he did look like Smith batted the first one in so the refs got them right apparently.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

I had a horrible viewing angle but it seemed to me like both no-goal calls were correct. On the second one, the net was definitely way off before the puck went in; I think what York was arguing was that a Lowell player knocked off the net (I have no idea on that one).

I think York was probably more ticked about some of the awful calls on Friday against BU and let his frustration spill over yesterday. It was a well-officiated game last night, imo (surprising since one of them was a Hansen).

Lowell's D was outstanding last night - that's what I expected to see from them all year. BC's bread and butter has been their ability to pretty much turn on the jets and burn the defender one-on-one almost at will, either by going around them with speed or dangling past them.

That wasn't happening against the Hawk D last night. BC had very few clean chances.

The officials seemed pretty certain about both calls as they waved them off immediately.

So John ... you were saying? ;)

Recall, I am a meteorologist. :D ;) :p

Lowell, arguably since the UNH ESPNU game, finally played to win a up-for-grabs game. That was the best defensive game I've seen Lowell play this year, in part because of the score.

Lowell did come out a bit flat in the third period, but I was more impressive what happened after the BC goal to tie it. From here, Lowell effectively managed the game to the final buzzer. When Worthington saw a chance, the senior took it without worrying about the repercussions and executed. That's the slim margin in this league between winning and losing and as a result, Lowell is back into the home ice talk.

The upcoming weekend should be called "desperation weekend" for BU, NU, UVM, PC, and Merrimack. By and large, they will play a game (in the latter three) two games that will probably determine if these game will challenge for home ice or in Merrimack or Providence's case, the playoffs. If Merrimack and Providence get swept next weekend, they are probably a good bet to be the two teams out of the playoffs.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

right now 2-5 spots are within 1 point of each other... (UMA 0 pts away 10 left, BC pts away 10 left, UML 2 pts away 11 left, Maine 3 pts away 12 left) which I highlights the importance of those UMass games... if we had won one of those we'd be tied with BC for 2nd with a game in hand, if we have swept we'd be 2 up on the field (save UNH) with a game in hand. As it is, we're still more than certainly in it.

The goal should be to finish in 2nd in the league... because if we do that we hit the major season goal... make the NCAAs... to finish in 2nd we will do well enough to push us over and its all within reach despite how the team has mired itself so far.

As much as I am a pessimist I am an optimist... we CAN be there, it is within reach... but we need to play like we did for what I want to say was 100 of 120 minutes this weekend... but for all the math in front of us... its within striking distance.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

This season now really has to live up to the old adage, one game at a time. Go to Northeastern, come away with two points. Lowell only has one game this weekend, while UMass has two away (BU and Providence), BC has only one (Providence home), and Maine is at Vermont for two.

Win your game and move on. After that, Lowell hosts BU the following weekend and at Merrimack. So Lowell has their next three games against teams in the bottom half of the league. They've got a shot ... they just have to take care of their business.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

Though I rarely post here, I'm coming to the Lowell fans with a serious question (not trolling): where is Maury Edwards this season?

Most of the times I saw him play last year, his ability to create offense was unmatched. His slap shot was a cannon and his puck-handling in the offensive zone was solid.

I've now seem Lowell play five times - all five were wins - but in each game Edwards appears almost absent.

Looking at the power play formation on saturday, he's back playing the left side of the umbrella, but they hardly move the puck to him like they did last year. I know that the situation became a bit of a live-by-the-sword, die-by-the-sword phenomina in the title game against BU when the Terriers keyed on Edwards on their PK and completely shut him down.

But I have a hard time believing that most teams could react quickly enough to execute a game plan similar to BU's, which featured one of the best all-time defensive corps I remember seeing.

Anyone have scoop on why he's so ineffective this year? Do the team's hopes ride in the direction of #7?

I'm really interested to hear fan reaction.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

we've been wondering the same thing. i think many of us secretly suspect he's playing through an injury. we haven't seen him blast one in a long, long time.

He got one or two good ones off against Northeastern in the 6-5 OT win, but on Saturday the only attempt I remember resulted in him snapping his stick on the play and fanning on the puck.

He doesn't even seem to be playing well without the puck, though he did drop a few big hits on Saturday.

If it is an injury, that would be a logical reason.

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

UML moves up to 15th nationally in the USCHO poll. Right in the middle of the Hockey East pack.

Strangely enough ...

13 New Hampshire
14 Boston College
15 Massachusetts
16 Mass.-Lowell
17 Vermont
19 Maine

Re: UML '09/'10 Season Thread Part II

Jeremy Dehner gets the Athletic Republic Player of the Week for his 1-3-4 against Merrimack.

Falite, who also had four points (3-1-4) was on the Honor Roll as was Worthington (two goals on the weekend).

Also, per the Press Release:
CAREER FIRSTS/MILESTONES/WHO'S HOT?
Jeremy Dehner, UML (Madison, Wis.) Became the third-highest scoring Division I defenseman in UMass Lowell history with 75 points

Kory Falite, UML (Billerica, Mass.) Has tallied 11 points (6g,5a) in eight games since returning from the holiday break for UML
