UMD offseason - 2010

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Good luck to Libby and I hope she can get more playing time somewhere else. And now there's room on the roster for one more player. Hmmm...the name Marie-Philip Poulin comes to mind. :D

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

I'm with you Schmoe, I'm always a little sad when someone leaves the program as I live in a world of delusion that the UMD program is all things to all players. But I realize that is not the case and am always impressed when such young adults make smart decisions for their careers and lives.

Thanks for being part of the team, Libby-- if you or your family are reading.

I heard that Libby was leaving and have heard of a couple others but I'll wait and see if there's more formal announcements, or general deductions, to avoid spreading gossip.

Now this matter of Ms. Poulin has me obsessively checking the commitment threads. My god, does she know the games she's playing with my head???

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

As far as I understand, Melody Davidson and Shannon Miller are on pretty good terms and that's a big reason for Haley Irwin ending up here. And you can't tell me Davidson didn't whisper something about the Bulldogs to Poulin at some point. I might be dreaming, but if she's currently looking at Division I schools, I have to think she's either been here already or has plans to show up sometime to take a look around.

Five more months...

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

From the Northland Newscenter Web Site:
Former UMD women’s hockey player Libby Guzzo will be the new captain of St. Scholastica’s women’s hockey team.
MULTIMEDIA
WATCH THE VIDEO
Guzzo, who was a member of two national championships with the Bulldogs, will be transferring schools to take the ice for the inaugural C-S-S women’s hockey season.
She previously spent three years playing for the Bulldogs.
Guzzo is also considering joining the St. Scholastica softball team when she makes the transition.
Tom Hanson announced Libby's move to CSS last night on TV. The link to the video is: http://www.northlandsnewscenter.com/sports/93782814.html

Congratulations and best wishes to Libby. Two national championship rings in 3 years is not too bad a career at UMD. Got to know her and her family during that 3 years. Great person and family. Her dad, Mike coaches the girls hockey and softball teams at Silver Bay.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Talked to Jackie MacMillan, CSS Head Coach, yesterday and she told me Jessi Flink, former UMD player (99'-02'), East HS Assistant Coach, and my good friend (still has my fishing boat and trailer), was selected as Assistant Coach for the new CSS Womens Hockey Team. Here is the link to the official announcement: http://www.csssaints.com/news/2010/5...527102253.aspx

Jackie also told me that Stephanie Lenz, 09'-10' UMD player, is transferring to CSS. She joins Libby Guzzo, '07-10' UMD player transferring to CSS and who is to be Team Captain. Also, Frankie Bergman, former Duluth Northern Stars HS player, will join the team. Jackie also told me of another HS player coming to CSS, but can't recall who right now. Memory issues become more frequent when you get to my advanced age!!!:o

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Does anyone know about Brienna Gillanders (Notre Dame Hounds) from Kyle, SK? She's an incoming freshman.

Interesting to see is that one of the incoming freshman for our rivals down I-35 is Bayley Gillanders (CAN 18s/Warner Warriors) Kyle, SK.

Ummm... Can I assume there's a relation? Can I assume that this makes for a really tough rivalry, if so? Oh boy.

Edit: Wait-- there is a Gillanders from SK at Clarkson, too. This name, Gillanders, must be like having the last name of Anderson and living in Duluth.

I believe the UMinn and Clarkson. Gillanders are sisters with UMD having the cousin of those two.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Matt is right; the Gillanders at Clarkson and Minnesota are sisters. The Gophers/Bulldogs have already faced off with cousins, as Melanie Gagnon is a cousin of Jocelyne Larocque.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

In news that will interest absolutely nobody, I talked to Katie Gilderman today and they still don't have their championship rings and haven't been to DC for their photo op with the prez. I suppose he's busy. It's funny how her face lights up when you mention hockey and the Bulldogs. She's a good kid.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Schmoe-

Do you think they are still trying to raise the funds for the rings? I was approached for donation and learned that the school can only spend X amount of dollars on things such as a ring.

If I find out they still need the funds, maybe we could do a little fan forum fundraiser if people are interested. $5 or $50-- you know, whatever you can afford.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Well, that's a new one for me. I've never heard of fans having to buy rings for a national championship team. I guess I just assumed the NCAA awarded rings along with the trophy.

Good Luck on the Whitehouse visit...

The Badgers are still waiting from the previous season.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

I take it Obama's not a huge women's sports fan. Or is this another "the school can't afford it" deal?

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Gee, this year's NCAA men's basketball champions already made their White House visit. Must be just an oversight.

The school has a set budget that the NCAA allows them to give to each player as an award or a recognition. I don't think that a team is allowed to raise money and give an award in excess of that amount, because then that would be a benefit outside of the NCAA guidelines and would be viewed as a violation. For example, having a wealthy donor contribute such that each player gets a $50K ring would be like buying each player a sports car, something that is only allowed for programs like Oklahoma football. If UMD is trying to raise funds, that must be just to cover the basic allowed amount. Here is a story that mentions the issue for Alabama football.

EDIT: Whoops, forgot the link to the Alabama story.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

That's kind of what I was thinking was that fans probably can't raise money to buy gifts for the athletes because there's all kinds of NCAA rules about that. Nuts. I hope the school can figure out something or it sounds like no rings and no visit to DC. They still have the trophy, but rings would be nice.
