UMD offseason - 2010

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Sounds as if the whole team gets to visit the White House! There was some discussion about the number of staff that could accompany. So far it's Coach Miller, former Chancellor Martin, and one more staff... I was guess Coach Schuler.
Glad to hear the whole team may make the trip.
BTW, the team entered the Dragon Boat Festival. Here is the link to the article on the Bulldog web site:
http://www.umdbulldogs.com/teams-womens-hockey.php?id=5155&page=news
And a note about it by Kevin Pates in the 8/29 DNT:
"UMD women race
The 2010 NCAA champion Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team logged extra exercise time last week. The Bulldogs began on-ice captain’s practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, followed by weight room work. And there was Dragon Boat practice Monday through Friday for 45 minutes to an hour.

“As soon as we got in the boat, it was pretty serious,” said goalie Kim Martin, returning to the team as a senior after competing for Sweden in the 2010 Winter Olympics. “When you’re done, you’re tired and your arms are burning.”

New assistant coach and former UMD forward Maria Rooth was competing with the UMD team, which had the sixth-best time in the preliminaries in 2:11.55. UMD opens official practice Sept. 20."

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Word on the street is that Jenna will be joining the 'Dogs in 2011-2012. I can only assume that she'll keep her gig with the Aero's until then.

When she gets here, we'll greet her with open arms.

Correct. Heard from various sources that she will do another year with the Aeros before joining UMD.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

This will be an interesting season with only four freshmen coming in and a handful of familiar faces rejoining the team on top of all the players who entertained us last season. Can't believe Friddy's a senior already. And one more year of development for McParland can only help, so good luck to her.

I'm just rambling.

Not that I'm counting, but 27 days... :D

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

I'm so with you Schmoe. I wish I could just rip off the September page of my calender and call it go-time.

I think the girls are fired up and excited for the season. The freshman from last year are still riding the National Championship wave and the Olympic girls that are back are excited to step back into a cohesive group. Friddy's got a new shoulder so I'm hoping she's going to be more dangerous than ever. The incoming frosh will hopefully blossom with great role models.

The goalie situation will be interesting but that's a tight group of girls there that just want to win. Martin is back, can she find her mojo? Harss was amazing but did just have ACL surgery this summer and Steck should not be overlooked. Rather than try to inject some drama into, "Who will get to play", I'm just thrilled there are three solid girls that can handle the task.

The girls had some great team building/ cohesive time in the dragon boat race last weekend with now Coach, Maria Rooth, paddling as well as former Bulldog, Erin Olson who provided some serious "engine room" power. They finished 6th our of 87 teams. And the top 5 teams? Serious, year round paddlers. No small feat.

I think we need to plan a fan trip to NoDak for the conference opener. Anyone in?

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Hmmmm...I wonder what CanHockGuy thinks of this development?

I can tell you that she is real good now. Maybe the football way of recruiting and developing is finding its way into women's hockey? She is in no need of further development, at least on the ice. :)

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Looks like the trip to the White House will be Monday, with much of the team going . . . from the DNT, Wednesday Sept 8 . . .
Hope to see some photos. I assume coach will be decked out if full glitter for the big day?

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Glad (almost) everyone could make it back for this. They earned it. I didn't see Saara Tuominen mentioned and that's a shame. It's been six months already, so I assume she's moved on to bigger and better things at home by now and can't get away.

I wish someone would bring a video camera and post some highlights for fans to see, but that's wishful thinking. I'll make do with some pictures, though. :D

23 days to go, but since it's a half hour to midnight, I'm calling it 22 days (not that I'm counting)

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Saara will be there......she is still in town finishing up some schooling.....she is just not mentioned as coming from afar because she isnt :):D

Glad they finally got an invite, better late than never i guess.......

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Found a nice little interview with Sarah Murray on some Italian hockey site about her new adventures in Switzerland, for those of you who haven't had enough yet of the 2010 champion team. :) Her brother, Brady, is also playing in Lugano, so that's kind of cool.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Thanks for the link Schmoe!! Nice little article, my favorite quote:

On the ice I think I’m 6 feet tall and try to play like it. The only time I realize I’m only 5’3″ is when I watch the video of the game the next day. I have a strong work ethic and work hard all over the ice. I’m tenacious and a bit feisty.

That totally descibes the way she played for UMD -her attitude was always one of a 6' bruiser.

Now that the weather's turned cool the itch to get to the arena has kicked into high gear. . .

Can't wait to see our team on the ice again . . .and Maria back on the bench.

I too hope we get some nice pics from the upcoming WH visit.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

I guess it's time to start visiting USCHO again .. more regularly .. since we'll be watching hockey really soon. :D

Sort of hockey, sort of not.. Heidi Pelttari scored a goal (her first) playing for the soccer team on Friday.. in her first action of the season.. as a senior, based on eligibility.

KUMD's website has a little story and a few pictures of the White House festivities from yesterday. If you view the slideshow, you can enlarge the pictures by clicking on the little magnifying glass. Here's the team picture:
