UMD offseason - 2010

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Gilderman is most likely transferring to another school as she's looking for a academic program that UMD doesn't offer. From what I can tell, she's aware of and grateful for the cinderella story that landed on her doorstep. We're grateful too!

I just talked to her recently and while she had an incredibly good time this year, she's not expecting to be asked back, especially if Kim Martin does return. But either way, this year was a fluke and she came in with the express condition that she only wanted to be a practice goalie and not actually play in a game. She's had problems with knee injuries and that was her main concern, that she didn't want to get hurt again. But she had a ball and was all smiles when talking about this past season and the FF and championship. A super nice kid and I wish her all the best.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

More than anything I love this sport, love the legacy that UMD has created, and love being a witness to something that I would love to have been a part of if I could turn back time 15 years...or so. Instead, I just yell and cheer and if the hockey gods let me and the girls do their jobs, I run victory laps around Ridder. And sometimes I wear funny things. More on that later...

My cousin, Julie Enberg, was a goalie and coach of the UMD women's team before it was an "official" sport and was a hockey fanatic. She played high school hockey, too, on the boys teams. She passed away at age 38 in 2000 before things really took off, but I know she's smiling wherever she is because it's hockey and I never saw her not smiling anyway. But this really is a special program that Shannon Miller has built. Sometimes it's hard to believe it's only been going on for a relatively short time considering all the success they've had, and other times you wonder where all that time has gone.

Speaking of doing things at games, I throw my hat on the ice after a hat trick. Call me a dork, but I thought that was hockey tradition. Hats are cheap, they're sold at the games and really...how often do you see a hat trick anyway? Holmlov and Friddy got my first two in 2008-09 because those were the first I'd seen. Manu, Maunu, Manoo or Mineiux or however she spells it got two hat tricks this year, both against North Dakota, so I tossed two more. (I don't think the players actually get the hats, but it's the thought that counts.) I'm going to keep throwing mine. I'm the guy wearing the Holmlov jersey, which I bought it at that auction during the Gophers game earlier this season, so feel free to buy me a new hat next time. Okay? Really? You'd do that? :D

No Asserholt. Jenni isn't coming back, but everyone else is (out of the redshirts).

In that case, either there is another D coming in, or someone currently listed at F is moving back, or both. You can play a game with four D, but not a season.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Holmlov and Winberg have been back since just after the national title game, but I don't know if Martin is back or whether she's coming back. None of that has anything to do with defense...I just wonder why Asserholt won't be returning. With Rasmussen and Murray graduating, the Bulldogs are a little light on defense next year.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

I think Asserholt just was homesick and wants to stay put. Martin is coming back for sure, I am not sure why people keep wondering, but she is. I am sure UMD has to post the job, but I am also sure they already know who they are hiring in Macteer's place. Most programs do at this point!

I concur. But it's fun to wonder, surmise and if I'm getting the jist with *some* on this forum, create drama.

I can't claim the idea in my head, but I'll put it in writing... a certain bi-lingual hire... ahem... (their requirements, not mine) sure could put an interesting spin on recruitment efforts and influence. Especially when it comes to desired players from the True North Strong and Free.

Also: what the hell am I going to do with no hockey for several months? Killing me.

What an Asserholt! :D

Sorry, I just couldn't resist...thought of it the first time I ever saw her unfortunate name, but seeing as she isn't coming back now, well....

I think the concern is that she'll turn 25 at the end of February, just when the playoffs are getting under way. Isn't there an NCAA rule about 25 being the cutoff age for student athletes? That would kind of suck to say she could play the entire regular season and then be benched through the playoffs.

Well, if they're really looking for an assistant coach who can teach forwards how to skate, maybe Blais will be staying in town a bit longer. :D

Yeah- I was hoping for some clarification on that rule. Is it a hard cut off at 25? Or do they allow you to play the whole season if you turn 25 w/i that season?
