UMD offseason - 2010

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Then there's Haley Irwin. Man I love watching her play. I'm a big fan of the Maple Leaf in general and she's great in maroon and gold, too.
You will enjoy watching Jenna McParland too. They have lots in common aside from unreal skill. Both are from the Thunder Bay area.

Time for some T-Bay trivia....

First

Haley is second in line when it comes to T-Bay Women hockey player Olympians winning a gold medal. McPharland could well make it as the third in line down the road. Who was the first in line....Hint.....Think Ivy.

There was another T-Bay native who won gold in Hockey and in the process joined the exclusive triple gold club. Who is this person.....Hint...Think Brotherly Love.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Katie Weatherston - Dartmouth.

What do I win?

I might add... Thunder Bay's city flag is pretty cool looking. http://tinyurl.com/y8p94bt

I'm beginning to fall in love with Winnipeg when you consider some of the great players, especially the UMD variety, that hail from there.

The second trivia question would be Eric Steel...er I mean Staal.:)

Oh jeeze. I forgot to answer part two because I was too busy high-fiving my bad self over the first question.

The Staal brothers have quite a reputation her in MN. Seems the created quite a ruckus on one of the north shore resorts/ cabins some years back. I can't remember the details, I just remember thinking... hey guys-- it's the Canadians. Rowdy? yes. Harmless? Absolutely.

Harmless till you put a hockey stick in their hands...:)

Katie Weatherston and Eric Staal are indeed the right answers.

IIRC, the boat outing was related to a bachelor party for Eric. I think his brother Jordan (the one that plays in Pittsburgh) was also involved. Altogether there are 4 Staal boys playing hockey, 3 in the NHL.

Eric became the 23rd member of the so called triple gold club, Olympic, World and Stanley Cup champion. Three famous players out of those 23 managed it twice...Fetisov, Larionov and Forsberg.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

If I recall, the youngest Staal went to the NHL this year, making that all 4 Staal boys playing pro....can't remember where though.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Okay Bulldog fans. I knew I read this a while ago, but it was in November. I mean, really, I can't retain 2010-2011 info when I'm busy soaking up the 2009-2010 season.

Anyway, a reminder of some of the fabulous talent that is coming at is in a few shorts months. Okay, maybe not a few and maybe not short. But a person can dream, can't they?

Read up, study, think of nick names and other fun things to pump up next season's squad.

Sounds like I'll be making up a huge batch of "No Gophers" shirts (Goldy with the Red Circle and Slash through him). I guess it really fired up the girls because I used the graphic as my Facebook profile pic. The girls that were in Vancouver at the time caught wind of it and made it their profile pic too. Send me your shirt sizes now.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Lots to think about Skate . . . I think a great lakes theme could be kind of cool for the upcoming season . . . since the Lakers of Mercyhurst will likely be in the picture and the FF is on the great lake Erie! Now really, compared to Superior, is Erie really a "Great" Lake?

I'm looking forward to watching Ms. Gallop take the ice for the 'Dogs. Any player with a local flavor gets more attention and I truly hope she'll be a spark for the Dogs and will hopefully pull in a few more local fans.

All of the new players already seem so accomplished . . . it's hard to imagine how the team will shape up and if any of last season's players will be gone :( .(Aside of course from the seniors.)

I think UMD had 11 forwards at the end of the season. Two have graduated, but it looks like you are slated to add seven. Maybe someone is moving to D, otherwise, I doubt that you will roster 16 forwards. Similarly four goalies is most likely one too many.

Yep, 4 goalies won't make it . . . I take for granted that Gilderman will not be asked back.

As for the forwards, Steph Lenz probably had the least amount of skating time of all so my guess is she may also not be asked back. :( I dont really like to think about it since every player on that roster contributed so much this past season.

I'm hoping maybe Shannon will go to 4 attackers on a regular basis . . .she's done that in the past . . . but I don't know enough about hockey to make any kind of educated guess if that's even possible. Someone else mentioned that Wong played quite a bit of D early in the season - but that seems like a "waste" of such an offensive minded player. Maybe Haley, Elin and Winberg will take turns on the point . . . .

Right now UMD only will have these defenders:

Gray, Posa, Larocque, new Fin, hmmm . . . . Hard to imagine what will happen. Maybe Santa can skate too! :D ;)

Gilderman is most likely transferring to another school as she's looking for a academic program that UMD doesn't offer. From what I can tell, she's aware of and grateful for the cinderella story that landed on her doorstep. We're grateful too!

I think that was probably me. Having watched Wong play a fair amount of both D and F prior to her going to UMD, I can honestly say that I actually like her even better as a D.

We could get the best of both worlds. Rasmussen became quite an offensive "D" for us.
