UMD offseason - 2010

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

Yeah...no kidding. Not sure I want to get tangled in that toxin.

ANYWAY... HOCKEY.

Great call! :)

Then there's Haley Irwin. Man I love watching her play. I'm a big fan of the Maple Leaf in general and she's great in maroon and gold, too.

Anybody have any thoughts on this year following the Olympics? Any insight on the girls coming in?

You will enjoy watching Jenna McParland too. They have lots in common aside from unreal skill. Both are from the Thunder Bay area. Both boarded in Toronto in their teens to play with the Toronto Jr Aeros, where they were coached by Ken Dufton. Both made Team Ontario at age 15, which is quite rare. Both are natural goal scorers.

McParland scored the tying goal for Team Canada in the World U18s this weekend vs the US to force OT in the finals.

I expect she will make a big mark at UMD too. Darn. ;)

There'll be plenty of room in the new arena for another Bulldog fan!! ;)

I'm very anxious to see Ms. McParland take the ice - I've only heard great things about her.

ANYWAY... HOCKEY. I was trying to remember all the Olympians that red-shirted this year and what roles they will fill when they return this fall.

Elin Holmlov, Pernilla Winberg, Jenni Asserholtt and Kim Martin

Does anybody know for sure if Kim is coming back? And if so, what an interesting goalie scenario we will have on our hands with Steck and Harss in place. I know it's been dissected a bit in other threads.

Jenni played Defense, right? So we'll have her back with Joss Larocque on the D for leadership...

Then there's Haley Irwin. Man I love watching her play. I'm a big fan of the Maple Leaf in general and she's great in maroon and gold, too.

Admittingly I`m not really up on the D1 teams in the West but in quickly glancing over the roster and comparing it to the other guys. Is there a story behind how well balanced the UMD team (The Bulldog`s if you`ll permit)
is when it comes to where the players are recruited from. I mean...the Bulldog lineup seems well represented by Offshore, East and West Canadian and Local talent as well as a graduating left coaster. BTD show`s UMD`s recruiting efforts to date follow the roster pattern in securing 1 Offshore, 2 Canadians and 2 US players.

In comparison the other guy`s..the gophers I guess there called:rolleyes: are heavily weighted with Minnesota born & raised players while their recruits to date are split down the middle with 3 Canadians and 3 US born players which show`s a shift to the north in their recruitment logistics from years past. (Don`t jump on me..this is not a Canuck vs. US debate, just the facts)

My point is..I remember reading a while back that State law was being sought to end the practice of State schools offering FA or scholarships to out of State student`s or something to that effect. Has any such law been effected or is it that Jesse the Body didn`t get around to signing that one before he left...dunno.

Sorta don't wanna open up this can-o-worms because it's old and tired to me-- and I realize you're not trying to start anything 5-4. I remember reading an article somewhere.... sometime... about Shanon's first year and her recruiting. She couldn't get the MN girls. They wanted to be Gophers, as the U of MN is the "Main U" as we call it up here. The Wisco girls wanted to be Badgers. Nothing wrong with that at all. She had to go somewhere to get girls. And get girls that could win-- after all, that's the bottom line performance measurement, is it not?

I think we'll see this shift a little as more girls who can play at a D1 level are coming up through the ranks as the level of girls' hockey in the states grows.

I, for one, am excited for a new frosh-- Jaime Kenyon. She is from my hometown in (cover your ears Big Red) WISCONSIN. We didn't have hockey when I was a kid, which isn't all that long ago, and now look! And yes, she was recruited by the other schools in the WCHA. She chose UMD over UW. I'm not going to say why, it's not my place, but that says a lot about "Local" girls and their desired schools and how that might be shifting too. As far as I know, no such laws have been placed regarding nationality of recruitment. But, I don't know much.

And at the end of the day, I am reminded that the word "University" includes the word "Universe" in it. (I read this somewhere, too.) Thus including people from outside your backyard. And what a great opportunity for all players of all teams, to play with and against girls from the international arena. There's more than just learning about hockey going on there I would suspect.

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

That would cause unreal problems. ;)

How about you cheer for us when we're not playing "your" team? Or, if you are a Gopher fan and that's totally off the charts, we'll just accept you as being one of those "nice" Gopher fans. They DO exist. Like precious gems, they do occur in nature. I had a lovely chat with a former Gopher mom at the semi's in March. I was astounded, and pleased, that she wanted to talk to me. Despite my "No Gophers" shirt.

Oh wait. "Dogfights". You're no rodent.

Def don't want to open any can of worm's.... Just saying IMHO it is easier to put a winning team together when players are chosen by their merit and not their zipcode.

Awww....thanks for the props, OnMAA. I have been reading off and on for sometime, learning and listening, cringing and staying away. Then coming back to get the scoop on the teams coming into the Frozen Four. I held off on creating an account. There's a lot of craziness on these forums and I know when provoked....well....let's just keep it nice, eh? ;)

I guess after this unexpected banner year, I was NOT ready to stop thinking about all hockey all the time and I finally took the plunge and signed up. I had a great time meeting some new fans this year. Fans I had seen and heard, but not that I connected with. Plus, I still need to go over to that Cornell thread and trip over myself with props to the other Big Red. That team was something else!

More than anything I love this sport, love the legacy that UMD has created, and love being a witness to something that I would love to have been a part of if I could turn back time 15 years...or so. Instead, I just yell and cheer and if the hockey gods let me and the girls do their jobs, I run victory laps around Ridder. And sometimes I wear funny things. More on that later...

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

I second OnMAA and say, "Welcome", Skatefast.

Though, I would say Skatefast has as big, if not a bigger, mouth than I do!! (Don't poke the bear!) *mwwaaah*:D

Well...there's a breath of fresh air.

You are correct with your assumption on me not being a UMD fan. My allegiances lie with the ECAC and the OUA (Ontario). I was rooting for the Big Red (ivy style) in the FF.

I third, and even though I'm a former player and stalwart fan of a team that struggles to get by you for the last few post seasons, welcome!

I don't have any issue with the UMD coaching staff, and hey, um, if you want to hop on a winning train - why not.

I will say that you'd be better off in Durham:D

Re: UMD offseason - 2010

If I had to root for an ECAC team, I could for sure get behind Cornell. My observations from the FF were:

~ Great team, lots of heart, solid skills, clean playing.
~ That goalie? Someone should send her on an all inclusive cruise. She rocked.
~ GREAT fans. The guy behind me trying to out yell me was awesome. Loved it. I felt like calling him up to have some tea w/ honey the next morning after 3 nail biting OT's.
~ Acceptable mascot. A bear. Ferocious, intimidating. Not a chipmunk, rodent or other vermin that are otherwise considered a pest.

I know, I know. I have tough criteria.

That said, I'm the first to admit I live in a WCHA bubble. I'm trying, really. I am encouraged by the level of play that some of the other WCHA teams are bringing and will continue to bring to the table and ultimately to the 'Dogs next season.

Wait . . . Wait you're not that crazy Dog fan with the collandar are you? Or the NO-GOPHER T-shirt??? If so, we need to connect for season tickets next year, right?

Okay, I was just re-reading and digesting here. First, I must tell you that Thunder Bay is my Canadian home. Meaning, when I need to get a dose of the Maple Leaf, I head up there and hang with my friends who have dubbed me an Honourary Canuck. Yes, I have an I Heart T Bay shirt and a Aspiring Canadian shirt.

Now you're telling me another T-Bay'er is coming to my fair city? Imagine my joy. Head exploding.... *boom*.

I think next year's colander theme will incorporate the flags of the countries represented on UMD ice, you know, to CELEBRATE the diversity. And if you don't know what the heck I'm talking about regarding the colander, just ask Binnyrus. Holy crap. Next season is coming fast. I've got work to do.
