UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Mariia Posa (Finland), Jessica Wong (Canada) and Jenny Harss (Germany) are all playing overseas for their respective countries this week in the MLP Cup.

Apparently the UMD information person doesn't see this as something to write about even though schools like Cornell, Mercyhusts, OSU, UW and more have written about it weeks ago. 5 National Championships and we can't get support from the school itself internally. Nice.

Canada beat Switzerland today 5-0 and our girl Wong, was there with an assist! Definitely some names on the ice that are normally rivals such as Spooner, McIntosh, Bram, etc! A keen reminder that we some of us try to stab each others eyes out in our fanaticism, we forget that our opposing teams have players that are teammates outside the University walls.

My translator tells me that Finland beat Sweden-- maybe in overtime. Trying to see if Posa had some action but I cannot tell. She's a defenseman so maybe we won't see her name in lights even though she is still working.

Germany plays tomorrow- we'll see if Jenny is in goal.

Just two weeks now until the Gopher Smackdown, 2011.

Ugh. Does this break seem longer than ever? Anyone planning on heading down for the game?

The break has been really long.. I won't make it to Ridder, the UMD men are hosting the 'red devil' at Amsoil the same series

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Canada shut out Sweden 6-0 Saturday night for the gold medal at the MLP Cup if anyone's interested. The link has tournament results and game summaries for all games played.

Thanks for sharing, Schmoe.

I also wanted to point out something remarkable. The Canada-Germany game was a blowout at 9-0. But here's the backside. I believe the shots on goal we something like 90-10 in favor of Canada.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That means Harss, who was in goal with clearly no defense to help her, had 81 saves!
81 saves. How is it even possible to get 90 shots off in 60 minutes? Kudos to Jenny. She definitely has the right stuff.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Four days, six hours, 52 minutes until the Bulldogs take on the vile rodents in Minneapolis. Not that I'm counting. :D

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Not the kind of result you want to start 2011, but not *that* surprising coming from Ridder Arena either given the UMD history in that building other than last season's 2nd half run. Probably a major advantage to Minnesota playing a week earlier while UMD played their first games of 2011 and first in over a month. I really hope next year UMD finds a second non-conference series again or just re-starts the season earlier next season.

That was definitely a factor in the early going on Friday. Once UMD scored to tie the game at 1-1, it was a more even game, but they definitely had that "coming off a layoff" look for the first 2/3 of a period. I don't think it was as much of a factor on Saturday, because UMD had the advantage by the end of Friday, and rust usually doesn't return a day later. I believe that another factor is your first series in the new rink against #1 next weekend. Coach Miller usually targets certain series where she has her team peaking, and I'm sure the Badgers are wearing a bigger target than the Gophers these days.

As for the late start to 2011, that is likely due in part to the MLP Cup. Had the Bulldogs played, they'd have been minus a few players. Miller mentioned it as a disruption for this weekend, so I'd think that it would have been a negative for a potential UMD series on the weekend of Jan 8th as well.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I suspect UMD fans are well aware of this but to me this weekend Fridfinnson seemed like a mere shadow of the dynamic performer she was a season ago. Her play not being up to par seems to leave UMD a little bit thin.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

She played most of last season with a dislocated shoulder, had surgery on it in the off-season and then hurt it again at the beginning of this season. But I thought she was involved in more plays this weekend than she's been in a long while. She's clearly not in top form and probably chose long-term health over scoring points this year, which sucks since it's her senior year, but health always comes first.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I still don't think Friddy's lack of scoring etc is as much about injury now, as it is playing D 90% of the time now. I saw signs of what she was in a few games where she decided to take the puck to the offensive zone. The team is stacked up front put not so much on the blue line. The points she's scored have been more when she's on the powerplay as a forward, plus a short-handed goal so I believe she can still produce as a forward. Come playoff time we may see her and Wong back up front as scoring threats and skate 4 D when it comes down to winning 1 game at at time.

I agree that the position change is a big factor with Fridfinnson. She looked like herself when she carried the puck on the attack, but she always seemed to be going in alone, unlike in the past when she was a F and would have Blais with her. As presently configured, the Bulldogs aren't that stacked up front. Taking Wong and Fridfinnson out of the mix up front leaves you much shorter than teams like Wisconsin. UMD's third line struggled last weekend. I don't think you can afford to move both Wong and Fridfinnson off of the blue line, though. You can play 4 D if they are all very good. Larocque is great, Gray is solid, but the other two aren't really what you want out there 30 minutes a game. I could see going with 5 D including Wong and moving Fridfinnson back up front.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Short piece on Larocque in today's DNT: http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/189339/group/Sports/

Hoping the Dogs can put together two nice games this weekend. A split would go a long, long way in soldifying their spot in the final 8 - a sweep would most certainly secure it. That and not losing any other conference games . . .

One just gets the sense that this team has not come together yet. This is usually the time of year Coach Miller focuses on . . . so let's get it done Dogs!!!

See everyone tonight for our first games at the New DECC.

:D

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Some highlights on this weekend's series:

Commemerative jerseys will be worn by the players an are available for auction. I believe the auction closes at one the end of the first period on Saturday's game--- but don't quote me on that.

Also, many alumni are going to be at the game for a big ole "most winning program in the history of NCAA Division I Women's hockey" reunion. Let's hope that all bring a little extra mojo to the game.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Not the greatest game in UMD's history..and now winless in the last 4 games games and it won't get that much easier if they don't meat Wisconsin on Saturday.. Bemidji now is tied with UMD in the WCHA standings for 4th/5th place, though UMD has 2 games in hand. Need to get 3 points tomorrow in the worst way to end what's looking like a slide.
