My feeling is the responsibility to do what can be done to avoid injuries to players involved in those intense, heated rivalries rests with the officials nearly exclusively...through intelligent, competent, consistent and even handed enforcement of the rules that are on the books. Does the word "official" used in a sentence with those other terms constitute an oxymoron? I think there are definitely some instances where coaches may have some responsibility themselves for their players actions...on ocassion, a need to intervene. I don't know how the various coaches deal with undisciplined play by any of their players. I do know of one coach that once every so often, will park a player firmly on the bench for repeatedly hampering the team with their infractions. Maybe they all do at times and I just haven't seen it. If play is out of control there's a reason for it...I think that reason is most often the officiating. Have to send the message early upon the onset of dangerous, cheap or chippy play IMO...because it's a game of high emotion and things escalate quickly.
I've yet to see a Gopher / Badger game degrade into anything resembling a penalty laden contest...since both teams always play such a highly sportsmanlike brand of hockey.

Quite the unpredictable season in the WCHA...with the possible exception of UW. The most unpredictable I've seen in my time following the WCHA women.

The Sioux weren't sorry tonight. The Bulldogs gave away a game and were outplayed in the last half of the third period hands down. I think...is that my opinion?

I'm not gonna tell you what you saw or even what you think, but yes. They gave away the game. I'm not sure how you don't ride THREE GOALS IN 30 SECONDS well into periods two and three, but this is a craptastic way to end the first half.
I know the girls will be thinking about this one for a while. They gotta start showing up for both games. Gotta.

Well, they have a month to dwell on it. They were something like 12-7 going into the Christmas break last season and went 18-1 the rest of the season. But they have to play complete games on both nights or it's not going to happen this season. This month off is when they decide if they're going to seriously defend their national championship or not.

Great little piece from the CBC on Jessica Wong and what she is up to on her break back home in Nova Scotia.

Hard to say if she likes it or not. Sources tell me she prefers otherwise but obviously is filling a much needed role as "D" on her University team. I think she has the skills to play both.
I'm not sure how the recruiting/scouting process works for National teams but I'm certain she's played forward in the past for TC. But since she's been performing in a D role all season here, that's where the TC staff have seen her play in terms of evaluation this year. I guess we should ask her!
I don't know enough about Germany's team and weather Jenny will be a starting goalie or not. Hope to find out in Jan!

I realize it's not women's hockey, but the first game at the new Amsoil Arena is tonight at 7:30, the US Hall of Fame Game with UMD vs. North Dakota. If nothing else, it's a look at the new digs. Locally the game is on KBJR (or My9) which looks extra sweet on a big flat screen. And it's available on B2TV which I assume will look crappy.
They're actually going to cover some of the rest of the women's season on local TV, too, if you can't make it to the games.
