UMD 2010-11 Season

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

UMD women haven't been scored on in 230 minutes and 31 seconds of game time...since going down 2-0 the first period against Mankato last Saturday.

Dana Gallop got her first two career points, on two assists today, plus Jamie Kenyon added an assist to her points total after her goal Saturday.

Enjoy it while it lasts! ;-)

Soooo.....now that the big sports weekend is out of the way.... I CANNOT WAIT for the rodents to come to town. I challenge everyone on here to bring a friend to the game that would not normally come. Let's fill those seats, fans!

I did that last year.. got two that would normally only come to a men's game to come to one of the Gopher games.. won't happen this year unfortunately

The Gophers haven't given up a goal on the road this season and Räty personally has yet to allow one. I expect that all of these streaks will end at some point this weekend. Blais was one of my all-time favorite players to watch for UMD, but I'm not sorry that her eligibility has been exhausted. She always killed UM.

I haven't missed a Bulldog/Gopher game in 4 years, but this weekend isn't looking good. Might still make one of them.

I could miss Saturday and head to Bemidji for high school football and to shoot the UMD men's game up there .. but it IS the Gophers so I'll be in Duluth

It's only from warmups, but a shot of Jamie Kenyon, since she was mentioned, from before the Whitecaps game

Thanks DHMN! I know some folks that will appreciate this a lot!

Speaking of freshman, how are people feeling about our 4 new recruits? Any early observations?

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I'll start with Brienna Gillanders, since she's playing against her cousin Baylee .. guessing it's her cousin given they're classmates from Kyle, Saskatchewan, and Baylee's siblings play out East. She's a 5'9" forward that I really expect to see moved to defense before her career at UMD is over. Just from observing her play the last couple weeks, she's not real fast but she's strong , which is what we really don't have on defense as far as I see it.

Jaakkola is hard to get an impression of, as a defenseman coming in as a freshman and immediately learning the 'Torpedo' system. I think we'll see her emerge more the end of the year than early. She may just become nothing but a solid defenseman like Posa, not someone who racks up points but doesn't give up points when she's on the ice either.

Dana Gallop's going to need a little time to get used to the college game after being relied upon as a scorer for GRG. I think the best thing for her is this year, she'll have that time with the potent offense, to figure out what she can do at this level. As long as Audrey Cournoyer stays hot on offense though, I see Gallop picking up a bunch of assists.

As for Jamie Kenyon, I don't know how competitive the league the Madison Capitols play in is, but when you score 100 points (61 goals 39 assists) in 52 games.. you obviously know how to put the puck in the net. She could benefit as well from Cournoyer's scoring touch.

OK, it's 2:30 am....

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

This isn't a great picture, but I like Jamie Kenyon's expression. She'd just been on the receiving end of a good hit and didn't look too happy about it. I like to think it's the Bulldog in her showing through.

I like how the other freshmen are playing considering it's all new to them. I like Gillanders' size and willingness to mix it up with anyone. I like Gallop's aggressiveness. I like Jaakkola's willingness to put the puck on net. It seems like I haven't seen a lot of Kenyon yet, so I don't have much to form an opinion on. Could be I just haven't noticed, but she's already got points...that's a good thing. :D

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

I think you were already gone when Kenyon scored her goal Saturday.. I was there and saw it.. but wasn't shooting anymore at that point...

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Yup, I missed it. But that just means she'll have to start shooting and scoring more often and earlier. :D

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Chalk Talk tonight at Blackwoods on London Rd. 6:30 pm, I believe.

One more day until the Rodents get Rumbled.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

DHMN - in regards to your great pics of Jenny's new helmet skin- not sure if you noticed the very unique accoutrement that adorns the Bulldog on the side of her helmet. It's pretty funny and unique to Jenny. I'll see if you can pick it up with your camera the weekend before I tell you what it is.

Sounds painful. Last Gopher games in the DECC, and I can't say I'll miss the place, although I do have fonder memories of it than Mars Lakeview Arena. As is often the case when we play in the fall, I'm sure the Bulldogs are confident of a sweep. We had some pretty high-scoring games both ways in the past when UMD used the torpedo. I hope there is some good hockey on display this weekend.

Would that be the accoutrement specific to this weekend? Jenny sending a message?

One thing that was pointed out to me earlier when I was trying to understand the torpedo is that there are more opportunities for break-aways but there are more opportunities for the opposition to also break away. Which makes sense given it's a system that heavily favors offense. So, it's a risk. I'm sure we'll see lots of SOG if not pucks in the net from both sides. I'm hoping it's in our favor, of course!

Haha! Unfortuatley no. But man, in my wildest dreams if I was a goalie there would for sure be a gopher-kill count on the back of my helmet.

The feature I speak of is specific to Jenny and sits on top of the Bulldogs head. You'll need a zoom lense or a good look at her when she's on the bench. If you miss it, I'll post a pic next week.

Re: UMD 2010-11 Season

Okay, I'm stumped. I have pictures of her helmet from both sides and don't see anything on top the Bulldog's head on either side. Unless she got something new painted on it?
