UMass Lowell 2024-2025 Season: Expectations are.....Expectations

23 goals in the 12 games since coming back from Palm Springs. The offense has disappeared (hell, that's actually worse than last year's total of 2 GPG). The offensive prowess of the first half of the year is proving to be a fluke at this point.

From how quiet this thread is with a huge series starting tonight, I'm guessing there's not much hope left in the fanbase for this season. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make the home game Saturday night (Revs home opener). I'll be at the Senior Night festivities next Friday at least.

I’m clinging on to some hope. But in the optimism department? I’m severely lacking. A win for UMass tonight would make Greg Carvel the winningest coach in program history. How sweet would that be to make Carvel wait until next weekend to hit that milestone? A man can dream, can’t he?

As an outsider that follows all of Hockey East I would like to see 6 Hockey East teams make the NCAA tournament. That being said the chances of that happening likely depend on a sweep in this weekend's series between the UMass schools. Whoever sweeps will likely move up to 11 in the PWR. The loser probably falls too far to make it up unless they get to at least the Hockey East final. A split leaves both clearly on the bubble and still needing to make a solid run the rest of the season and probably to the Garden as well. Good luck and if you win tonight I will be solidly behind you Saturday for the sweep. The same holds for the Amherst team.

I'm hoping for the best, but at the moment it feels like two teams going in opposite directions. Hopefully the Hawks can surprise me.

Tonight's lineup. Beni Halasz gets the start in net.

I'm not going to say stupid penalties cost them because they weren't showing a whole of speed and didn't hold the balance but a win was needed and it didn't come. They have to cut down on such nonsense

Final 2-2. UMA gets the extra point by winning the SO.

No change to the PWR, still at 14th.

So now we're up to 25 goals in 13 games since returning from CA, which made me curious on one thing. This is the list of our top 5 in points this season, and what they have since getting back from CA.
Cole: 2-6-8 in 13 GP
Buttazzoni: 0-3-3 in 9
Truman: 1-2-3 in 13
Vaarwerk: 3-4-7 in 13
Bentley: 4-1-5 in 13

In total, our top point getters have a 10-16-26 in 13 games. That just won't cut it. Outside of Parks (4-0-4 in 13) and Delaney (2-3-5) the freshmen have also been extremely quiet.

One thing that jumped out to me when I was looking at the advanced metrics. Mirko Buttazzoni led the team in attempted shots last night with 7, but he missed the net on all of them. Get the puck on net.

To be fair, Nemec missed significant time with an injury that he suffered in the 1st game in Palm Springs. Buttazoni missed 4 games with a concussion suffered in the 1st game after Palm Springs, and didn't look right in his first few games back. When both of them went down a couple of games apart is when the offense started to sputter.

this is a long running thing with me as I've been seeing this for a long time now but pucks into and through traffic... have to be more opportunistic. UMass's blue line blast, they work. don't be afraid to fire into seams in the defense

Going to be watching Penn State, Quinnipiac, and Arizona State with a close eye next weekend. All only have two games left and they won't be easy. Ideally Penn State (somehow) gets swept at home vs. Minnesota, Quinnipiac splits with the north country teams, and Arizona State splits with Omaha. Not a stats or advanced analytics guy but if those scenarios happen and Lowell is able to go 2-2 then I think they can grab the #13 seed. Could be completely wrong about all of this but I think that's the most realistic scenario for them to get in. Quinnipiac is on fire and Penn State is at home and already played two close games on the road against Minnesota, so again, I still think it's a long shot.
Tonight, the Big10 Network has the Ohio State - Michigan game (6:00 pm) on followed by Minnesota at Penn State (8:30 pm).

Lowell back down to #14 in PWR.

Quinnipiac lost in overtime to Clarkson. Penn State beat Minnesota in overtime.

Lowell sits at #6 in the Hockey East standings. UConn widened their gap with a regulation win over Northeastern. Providence took sole possession of #5 with a regulation win over Merrimack.

Another massive night ahead for pairwise implications and league standings. Go Lowell, go St. Lawrence, go Minnesota, go Merrimack, go Northeastern.
