Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

I saw this on twitter, 'Old Time Hockey". Check out Carter Hutton in action.

Bummer- I thought this was some awesome save. I might be the only person who thinks this but when the goalie skates down the ice to pick a fight with the other goalie it seems contrived and sophomoric. If a guy spears you or does something to you that is really nasty then maybe it is OK but the requirement to see a fight in a pro game is dumb. I would rather see hockey- which is why I like college hockey and could care less about the NHL. (Showing my true colors- girlie thoughts and all). If the NHL banned fighting/all the stupid posturing about the goons and focused only on the skill I would be all in.

:cue up howls of protest!:

So is there a weekend series thread yet?

Who's planning on being @ Matthews?

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Mathews proably isn't in the cards for me.

The latest HEA Blog devotes a section to Lowell and gets all doom&gloomy about our record against TUC which will kick in as a comparison criteria possibly after our game against Merrimack and definitely after our game against BC. I took the liberty of re-doing our comparisons assuming we lose the TUC comparison to every TUC we still only drop to 10th in the PWR.

As poor as the TuC record of ours is i dont forsee it affecting us to much. Not to jinx anything but we only need to finish slightly above .500 to match last years record. I still feel comfortable with a few more wins against TuC teams we will safely make the tournament

Been away for awhile as I've been busy...all for the good.

In the short term, the TUC will have an impact. I don't think it will be enough to knock us out, but it will be a self-correction to push us back to where we belong right now as a 4 seed. Winning always help that problem ;) :D :p

With that being said, there's a difference in have the #6 seed in the PWR on January 21st than on March 21st. The inference made by this morning's blog is that Lowell doesn't have room for much error against losses, regardless if a team is in or out of NCAA contention. Even still, there is an inordinate amount of hockey to be played. I'm happy the River Hawks have been taking care of business lately to get them back into home ice and NCAA talk and have gone a long way into salvaging a season that looked all but lost on December 1st.

This next four game stretch is the "weakest" part of the schedule the River Hawks have left this season, three of which are on the road. A home and home with Northeastern, then @Merrimack and @ Maine the following weekend. They have a chance to really put the clamps on NU, go ahead in the season series with Merrimack, and avenge an early-season disappointment @Maine. Assuming that BU/PC split their series and Lowell can sweep this weekend, the complete "Charlie Foxtrot" that Monty mentioned a few posts back with the HE standings goes into a total CF.

I'm not worried about the TUC... I haven't looked at it that closely but I would say that if we are 6/7 right now then there are some neutralizing factors... if we're on the edge of qualification then I'd start to worry... as long as we aren't and we're working on not being in that position I'm not worrying.

Goal remains the same.

It's pretty simple, keep winning and the numbers will fall into place. Of late, they haven't had a problem.

If both Lowell and Merrimack sweep along with a split in the BU/PC series, five teams would be separated by just one point going into February. Will it happen that way, unlikely, but it would be comical if it did.

I'm thinking about it for Friday night.

Hockey East ‏@hockey_east
MEN: @ProAmbitions Rookie of the Week: Connor Hellebuyck (UML). Hellebuyck made 31 saves in a victory over PC to mark his 6th straight win
And somehow, UMass is the team of the week even though Lowell actually won twice. I guess they didn't want to give it to the Hawks for the third straight week?

I'm planning on making the trip in. Hopefully the weather will not be an issue. According to reports there could be a storm moving in Friday night.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread

Interesting stuff to come out of the NCAA convention, affecting both scouting and recruiting.

Coaches will no longer be allowed to scout opposing teams in person, unless the opponent is part of a tournament or doubleheader at the same venue. Previously, coaches were allowed to scout in person, so long as they paid their own way and were not reimbursed expenses by the school.
For one, there will no longer be a limit on the amount of assistant coaches that can be on the road recruiting at one time, which was known as the "baton rule."

Second, the amount of contacts with a recruit, and the type of contact — i.e. electronic communication of any kind — from the start of their junior year on, will now be unlimited.

In addition, schools will now be allowed to treat recruits like their own student-athlete once a National Letter of Intent is signed. Previously, there were restrictions on what kind of team events those recruits could participate in.

I cannot concieve of why they cannot scout opposing teams in person. That is the dumbest rule I have ever heard of. I think they must sit up at night to think up this crap because no sane set of people could make this many useless rules.

I gotta agree. Why is this an issue, does anyone know?
