River Hawks thinking big for first season in Division 1 hoops
LOWELL -- The UMass Lowell men's basketball team is in the process of filling out their 2013-2014 non-conference schedule with a few of college basketball's big boys.
According to sources, UMass Lowell is finalizing contracts that will have the River Hawks playing road games at the University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati and UConn next season.
Sources also said a deal is being finalized that will bring Duquesne University, of the Atlantic-10 Conference, to UMass Lowell for a regular season game. Nothing is official yet.
The River Hawks will move up to the Division 1 America East Conference beginning next academic year. The athletic department is scurrying to fill out non-conference schedules for their teams with time now being of the essence.
Difficult road games, such as the one to play Rick Pitino's mighty Louisville squad, is common practice for lesser-known/new-to-Division 1 programs. While the games don't appear to be remotely close to winnable for UMass Lowell, they will provide exposure and experience in big-time atmospheres. The games also should create revenue.
