UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

While I won't accept that we strive for mediocre, I think being a mid-table AE school isn't the worst thing in the world... don't get me wrong, I want us to do the best we can, period... but I can't imagine we'll regret elevating the program. I do agree that keeping on marty for another 5 years would be important for consolidation.
It looks like the Men's Basketball team will be jumping right into DI play next season.

River Hawks thinking big for first season in Division 1 hoops

LOWELL -- The UMass Lowell men's basketball team is in the process of filling out their 2013-2014 non-conference schedule with a few of college basketball's big boys.

According to sources, UMass Lowell is finalizing contracts that will have the River Hawks playing road games at the University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati and UConn next season.

Sources also said a deal is being finalized that will bring Duquesne University, of the Atlantic-10 Conference, to UMass Lowell for a regular season game. Nothing is official yet.

The River Hawks will move up to the Division 1 America East Conference beginning next academic year. The athletic department is scurrying to fill out non-conference schedules for their teams with time now being of the essence.

Difficult road games, such as the one to play Rick Pitino's mighty Louisville squad, is common practice for lesser-known/new-to-Division 1 programs. While the games don't appear to be remotely close to winnable for UMass Lowell, they will provide exposure and experience in big-time atmospheres. The games also should create revenue.

Four points baby. That's the goal this coming weekend.

Win Friday at home. Take care of business on Saturday.

That being, it's easier said than done. Providence is playing well and they always have Gilles that can stand on his head to steal points.

This is going to be a very long week.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

What'd he say?
SOmething to the effect that they needed to adjust their play and one of the things they needed to adjust to was the officiating. Said with a very smooth, dry tone of voice :p

I think the change in Chancellor is the key point in the improvement in our hockey program so given that Marty is still here, I don't expect it to take nearly as long for the other sports to start to get acclimated to D1. Not saying 2-3 years (save for maybe field hockey) but definitely not 10-20 either.
Track, XC should be in good shape as well.

My brother is getting married at the end of this month. On March 30th. When Lowell could be playing in the NCAA Regionals.

I'm really not happy with my brother right now.

Kinda nice to see that this thread has over 500 posts, in just over a month. And it started with this...
Oh, and Lowell hockey is currently on an 11 game unbeaten streak! :)
Now that streak is 17-2-1 in the last 20. Amazing.

I don't suppose you could view the wedding via teleconference?

I feel your pain. Might get shipped out to France for work the weekend of the Hockey East Semi-and-Finals. Hoping and trying to get an early Sunday flight if that's the case.

As I told you yesterday, best friend is getting married that weekend too and I'm in the wedding. With the ceremony at Noon on Saturday and the reception at 7PM on Sunday, I'm crossing my fingers for Manchester so I can make both games. If it's Providence, I can't make the 2nd game. If it's GR, I can fly out for the 1st game and would have to fly back Saturday morning to make it in time for the ceremony and I'd miss the 2nd game. Toledo I'm totally screwed.

I'll be in South Carolina, so it doesn't really matter either way.

Racking up the weekly awards...
Hockey East ‏@hockey_east
MEN: @ProAmbitions Rookie of the Week: Connor Hellebuyck (UML) Hellebuyck stopped 62/63 shots faced & recorded his 4th shutout of the season
Hockey East ‏@hockey_east
MEN: Hockey East Team of the Week: UMass-Lowell River Hawks. UML went 3-0 on the week & captured home ice for the Hockey East tournament
Also, Lowell moves up to 7th nationally and picks up 2 #1 votes, in the USCHO poll.

Along those lines, does anyone know what time the Sunday HE Quarterfinal game is? Hoping it's not 4pm.... Otherwise I'm good for all other possible post-season games unless they end up in Toledo (seriously? Toledo?) or Grand Rapids.

Great win yesterday. The only team in Hockey East I can see possibly stopping Lowell's path to the title is Providence. Gillies is the real deal in goal. Just perfect that we get to see them before the playoffs. Should be some awesome games.

Kyle Bigos became Hockey East's all-time penalty minute leader all the way back in mid-January. Impressive stuff. Merrimack should have a banner.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

The feeling of being the only team in first in Hockey East is still so surreal to me this morning.

If work doesn't decide to screw me over, I could make it to the Thursday and Sunday games for the quarterfinal, and the entire NCAA as long as its not in Toledo or G.R.
Already booked for the HEA semis, but I'll find a way if I have to when it comes to the Finals.

If this is a dream, don't wake me up.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

When's the last time a team with more than one first place vote was that far down the ballot? Must mean a lot of voters put Lowell closer to the bottom. Seems like a serious case of diz-ray to me
Polls are so weird and defy logic.

On Friday night I had a family in front of me, two brothers and one of their wives with a pack of kids. Casual hockey fans, half paying attention, adults were into the beer and the kids into the fried dough. After an obvious post-whistle non-called Bigos roughing the appalled Mom said "that boy is a nasty BEAST!"

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

Please excuse the 13/14 season question ... but does anyone know if Denver/CC are coming east for return games next season? I'm guessing no because they both played Air Force on the "off night" whereas a normal "round trip" series would've included another Hockey East team on their off night.

On Friday night, I sat at center ice 188, Row 12 and caught a puck ... one of two rare pucks hit up into the section that night. Anyhow, after catching it, someone a few rows back yelled "Throw it at Bigos". Gave it to my 10 year old instead.

If it wasn't for those two votes, Lowell would've barely climbed this week ... despite an awesome 3-0 record against BC/MC. It was almost as if a few eastern voters realized that and gave Lowell a needed "boost". The pollsters are always looking at this week's results compared to last week's poll position and voting accordingly. Using that method, it makes it really hard for a team to leap up the polls unless they get some token "boosts" along the way.
