Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

Even more fun stuff ... I saw all the post-game stuff from MerriHack ... but I missed Bigos being his typical hack-like self. Luckily, the refs didn't (about the only thing they didnt' miss tonight).

Bigos picked up a 5 and 10 at the 20:00 mark of the 3rd, and will now be suspended for the Friday game against UMass.

And finally ... the Takeaway from CHN.

He is a goon. Had to love the Norm quote tonight about the officials. Amusing.

I heard that something was being called at the 20:00 mark but didn't hear for what. As Leslie said, he's a goon, pure and simple. It almost seems like Merrimack always recruits one huge defenseman, who often is a goon.

Bigos is one of those players that I feel like has been there for seven years.

So I had to share this ... I tweeted out this...
Lowell had more empty net goals this weekend than Merrimack had regular goals. :D
Shawn Bates, the Merrimack player favorited and retweeted that to his followers. I'm laughing.

Awesome. I think he had the 3rd star tonight.

A little off-topic, but a good article about Lowell's move to DI ... basically, be patient Lowell (and America East) fans.

I think the current state of the hockey program is a case-study on exactly that. Anyone who doubts Lowell can be successful in America East need only look at where Lowell was when it joined Hockey East. I remember there were a lot of folks who thought moving the hockey program to D-1 in the mid-80s was a bad idea. I just hope it doesn't take as long for the rest of the teams to make an impact in AE!

Moving the entire athletic program to D-1 was Dana's goal from pretty much Day One. Count me as one of those who are willing to admit they were wrong when they thought the guy was nuts (at the time).....

This is viewable at the tail end of the highlights on Hockey East's web site. At the very end Ellis and Wetmore exchange some very early Easter greetings. Bigos comes down and throws three left-handed jabs at Suter with stick in hand. Keenan then rings him up. It's quick and arguably not much, but that's a point of emphasis.

I think the change in Chancellor is the key point in the improvement in our hockey program so given that Marty is still here, I don't expect it to take nearly as long for the other sports to start to get acclimated to D1. Not saying 2-3 years (save for maybe field hockey) but definitely not 10-20 either.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

I don't think Bigos needs to be a goon...he is a decent defenseman but the idiotic penalties are crazy

IMHO, Bigos had the talent to be a forceful HE defensemen over the course of his career. He has an NHL-caliber shot and handles the puck well for a big man but his discipline problems on the ice really stymied his Merrimack tenure.

Awesome. I think he had the 3rd star tonight.

Shawn Bates by far was Merrimack's best player tonight. Other then Collins, I didn't see anyone (including him) that was even close to Bates

I could not agree more. Chancellor Hogan didn't give a rats *** about the success of the athletic programs. I still wonder if he hadn't dragged his feet and let Bruce Crowder walk that maybe the program wouldn't have taken so long to get back to some level of prominence....

While I won't accept that we strive for mediocre, I think being a mid-table AE school isn't the worst thing in the world... don't get me wrong, I want us to do the best we can, period... but I can't imagine we'll regret elevating the program. I do agree that keeping on marty for another 5 years would be important for consolidation.

Something tells me we are going to be a little higher than #12 tomorrow :D :p

The view from the penthouse is pretty . Still a lot of business to finish next weekend against another difficult opponent.
Any room left on the UML Bandwagon? My god what a run they're on!

Very much agree. If he continues his hockey play, he's going to need to adjust that.

Not just athletics but significant improvements on campus at all. 'Coasting' seemed to be his best talent.

Re: UMass Lowell '12/'13 Season Thread II

Approximate RPI (not accounting for changes in schedule strength... etc.) if...

(Ranking based on current RPI values of other schools.)
Code:
0-4, .5300, 14th
1-3, .5369, T-10th
2-2, .5438, 7th
3-1, .5508, 3rd
4-0, .5578, 3rd

1-4, .5326, 13th
2-3, .5394, 8th
3-2, .5461, 5th
4-1, .5529, 3rd

2-4, .5351, T-12th *lose 2 to PC, win series 2-1, lose SF

8-0, .5647, 2nd

I am not getting into all semi/finals combinations of wins and losses... only so much I care to do.
