“Good fortune” seems to follow Barr wherever he goes. At some point it stops being good fortune and is just him being a good coach. He’s getting the most out of everyone on the roster and he’s put the Nadeau’s in positions to succeed.

This! At least with NB line having good players grow up in Canada near Maine is the good fortune. In case you didn’t know there are many of the Nadeaus cousins, aunt, uncles, grandparents, parents coming to games at Alfond. They love seeing Josh and Bradly play live.

One of their family members that sits in our section was kind enough to give me a couple autographed cards that I was happy to add to my Black Bears collection. They are very kind!

Absolutely!
He knows how to communicate with that age group of athlete and the change in culture he made happen was sorely needed after 20 years of it going sideways.

Who doesn't, eh ?

Are there any efforts being made with NIL money and the hockey program? These guys are a hot commodity....I can definitely the Nadeau Bros. making some $$$ right now given the opportunity.

BU and BC have paid some guys but don’t think it is widespread. I don’t know for a fact they are not US citizens but assuming they’re not they would obviously have a lot more complicated tax situation than Americans and not sure if it would impact their student visas. I get the impression their family is reasonably well off so not sure how much money would move the needle for them.

Saw that this afternoon.

Still not official policy, but you could see that coming on the heels of the NIL thing.

If it becomes official, schools like Maine are screwed. They'd better win it all THIS year, because even hockey won't have the money to hire guys like the NB.

I doubt the influx of money into NCAA sports is gonna make a huge dent in D-1 hockey. There are already paying sub-NHL alternatives to many of the players who decide to play D-1 hockey for full/partial scholarships instead of money. Plus, D-1 hockey doesn't generate the revenue that you see (especially) in Football or (lesser) in Hoops. NCAA Football also acts as the primary "minor leagues" for player development in that sport, so you can absolutely see paid college football players being the big winners if this does change (and it does seem inevitable). Plus their pro career outlook is relatively short, so getting paid something while they are healthy - plus the scholarship, assuming that piece stays - certainly helps to cushion those who get injured while on campus, and may be shut out of that entry level NFL deal.

My guess is D-1 hockey kids would probably get a stipend to supplement their scholarships, and most wouldn't get much more than that, thus reducing if not eliminating the need to "get creative" to feather their beds. Most D-1 hockey kids are making decisions based on the coaches or programs they are joining, and the educational options many of them will rely upon once their pro career (if it ever even happens) peters out in the Coast.

There may be an argument that allowing D-1 hockey players to get paid in the NCAA may give D-1 programs an improved edge when it comes to luring Major Junior players south of the border, as they are generally limited to stipends nowadays. But if a kid wants to play lots of hockey and doesn't want to bother with the school piece, he's probably not gonna bother anyway. So as with NIL in D-1 hockey ... I see it as NBD.

I think this is quite an interesting take: https://www.bcinterruption.com/2023...l-charlie-baker-new-division-student-athletes

I could be good for hockey, if not for hockey players. Probably a bigger deal in hockey is the scholarship limit. There are lots of players paying to play, never mind being paid.

That article to me seems completely nuts. Why would you go from playing Clemson and Florida State in football and Duke and UNC in basketball to Maine, UNH, Umass, etc? Not that they’re going to win a national championship in either but at least you’re playing some of the best teams.

I have wondered for awhile if teams could basically give unlimited scholarships now. That would certainly benefit Maine where the cost is so much less than a private school. I’m not sure exactly how it would work as far as the money getting from the donors to players and what the tax implications are for the various parties but it would certainly help if you didn’t have to worry about dividing up scholarships when recruiting.
