St. George lost to Kimball Union on Thursday, but saw Ryder Shea was also co-named USHR Goalie of the Year.

Shea finished the year with a 1.90 GAA and .938 SV%. He's going to be a stud.

That was a tough quarter-final game! KUA won 5-4 in OT. KUA's goal tender McMeniman isn't too shabby either.

Where did you find stats for Shea? For me trying to do so for the recruit sheet was tough sledding.

If you dig a bit on the USHR site you should be able to find them. But I'll add them below in table form for you. [TABLE="border: 1, cellpadding: 1, width: 750"]

Congratulations to Kimball Union Academy! #2 seed KUA defeated #1 seed Cushing Academy to win the Elite 8 NEPSAC Championship at Harvard University today. KUA has won four titles in the past 11 years under Tim Whitehead.

With the benefit of hindsight, we old-timers must acknowledge that we sold Tim a little short.

I'm happy for him and for his success since he left.

Eh, I think most of us realize his time had run its course in Orono. He landed in a perfect situation in NH and his coaching style is a good fit for prep-level hockey.

I do wonder if he's been approached by other colleges after seeing how well he's done at KUA. Can't recall hearing him interviewing for any other D1 jobs since he left Maine.

Your right...his time at Maine was over...he is in the right spot in his Coaching career...he can handle that level.

New Hampshire losing means the Mildcats can no longer catch Maine. The Black Bears have clinched a first round bye. A look at the relevant standings: [TABLE="border: 0, cellspacing: 0"]

If Maine gets to 42, 43 or 44 points the Black Bears clinch the #3 seed.

If Maine gets to 41 points, as long as PC does NOT get to 42, Maine gets the #3 seed. If the Friars win twice in regulation, Maine finishes #4 and will host UMass.

Now things get tricky. If Maine and UMass finish alone at 40 points, Maine wins the tiebreaker (5-4 H2H points). If PC finishes with 41 or 42 points, they finish #3 and Maine #4. If PC finishes with <40 Maine finishes #3. However, if Maine, PC and UMass all finish with 40 points, the tiebreaker suddenly swings to UMass (10-8-3 H2H points {2-1.6-.75 ppg}). Then it depends on how both teams get to 40 points. Tiebreaker would be H2H points (3-3) then number of wins. If a game is still tied after OT it goes down as a tie and HEA awards the shootout winner an extra point, but that is still not a win. Maine leads PC 12-11 so a shootout win coupled with 2 OTW for PC flips the tiebreaker and drops Maine to #5. Two Maine OTL and a ROW + OTL for the Friars gets Maine to 4th. If PC and Maine end up tied in wins, the final tiebreaker is points per game vs 1st place team, which Maine wins 2-1.67

If Maine finishes with 39, the best they can do is 4th if PC gets 39 or below. If the Friars end up with 40 or more, then Maine finishes #5. I believe Maine wins every conceivable tiebreaker if both teams end up with 39, but I could be missing something.

If Maine loses both in regulation and ends on 38 then the Bears need PC to finish with <39 to finish 4th. 39 or better by the Friars drops Maine to #5. Again, I think Maine wins all possible tiebreakers at 38. That SOW against BC could be huge.

But just win twice and all this becomes irrelevant.

On the national scene, looking at Maine in a vacuum:
2 wins = 7th in Pairwise
1 win = 9th in Pairwise
0 wins = 10th in Pairwise

This does NOT account for any other teams around them, just the Black Bears. The wrong combination of (improbable) results could see Maine drop to 13th.

Thanks for doing this. It sounds like a Maine Win and Providence loss is the easiest scenario on Friday night. Maine absolutely needs home ice, if they back in and end up 5th I do not like their chances on the road at all. I believe the scenario is still on the table that Maine could see UNH in Orono if they come in 3rd or possibly 4th.

Reminder: Thur...BU@PC

Ryder Shea...goaltender recruit...is he headed to play next season in the USHL..?..if so,what team is he going to if anyone knows off hand....and another PC tidbit...schedule has a 4pm Saturday...NU@PC.

Shea's USHL rights are still held by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (2022 Phase I, RD 6, PK81).

Not this old-timer. Success at any particular level does not predict success at another level. And failure at one (D1) does not preclude success at another (prep).

What does the committee do if Maine finishes ahead of Providence in the pairwise? Providence is technically not the host in Providence so in theory that should be Maine’s slot. If UMass makes the tourney which it looks likely they will, they’ll be placed in Springfield since they are hosting.

So for Maine, it is Providence or bust in terms of an East regional. Definitely would be interesting for them to decide, my gut tells me we’ll get a raw deal and sent West regardless of whether we’re the higher seed or not.

Mainuhs would buy more tickets than pc fans for sure. This isn’t bball

This. They will be in Providence or Springfield with either BU/BC because they want to sell tickets.

Maryland Heights would be the farthest they will send them. UMass likely is a lock for springfield too, but remember they try and avoid inter conference matchups on the first rounds.

The NCAA has repeatedly treated Providence as the host team in Providence even when the Friars aren't the host. Just ask Jimmy.

If Maine ends up in the same pairing as UMass and PC then expect the Bears to head for Missouri unless something highly unusual happens.

I guess I was saying this: did he fail compared to Red?

Nope.

But we completely forgot about NCAA bids when Red was at the wheel. Pretty sure that Tim would've had better results.

I agree, and it is fair to say he was better than Red. No disrespect to Red, but that isn’t a high bar. I feel like Red was a great person and the players liked him and he was good for their character development. However, he didn’t put together a team that could compete with the top of the league. The one year he had something going got cut short due to Covid.

Tim achieved everything but the ncaa title(was 57 seconds away). The trajectory is what got Tim. It was a steady slow decline and the program was deflated. Fans, donors, etc… were very unhappy with where the program was at the end of his tenure.

Having said all of this, the program appears to have an upward trajectory now and is back to being a formidable opponent for the teams at the top of the league given Maine is in 3rd in hockey east and did well against BC this year. So if Barr continues to build this program he will be regarded as a savior. Is he the favorite for hockey east coach of the year since Maine was picked so low preseason? Maybe Greg Brown of BC since his team is so dominant?
