Re: UMaine Black Bears 2017/18, Red dawn

Aside from giving TV info this is my first post on this thread. As someone who posted often, and who has followed the program since my days in school when John Tortorella played I have been amused by the posts of late and thus watched from the sidelines. I defended Tim until I admitted I was wrong and I was critical of Red early on. HOWEVER! This hockey team demonstrated (now that we have consistent goaltending) that we are headed in the right direction. This team is is led by underclassmen and has another strong class committed for next year. I am consistently amazed by fans who want to make a change or who expect the team to be comparable to the Shawn years. It has taken 5 years for Red to get us relevant again. We would have all wished that it would have taken 2 years. It did not! However we are there now. Do you really want to risk losing the commits we have to start all over again??

Maine Hockey was picked to finish in last in Hockey East this past season by the coaches! Instead we were tied for 5th! How many of us at the start of the year would have signed up for that? Maine finally has depth, has 2 solid recruiting classes and a 3rd on the way and Maine appears to have a future that includes the NCAA's. Red bleeds Maine blue and cares deeply about the program, I am all in on an extension. I would expect further improvement next year and our first NCAA appearance since Flynn and Abbott. Not saying they will be in Buffalo, but enjoyed the way this team competed and with most of our impact players returning next year will be interesting!

......... I defended Tim until I admitted I was wrong........

You were not wrong about Tim. Since leaving Maine he has produced 2 consecutive Elite 8 Championships at Kimball Union. Last year his team won the first Elite 8 championship in 35 years. He is responsible for fund raising, recruiting and coaching. He is recruiting players internationally and has players currently committed to D1 schools. His recruiting did falter the last two - three years while at Maine. Some of the issues he faced were out of his control. One of them being a goal tender issue. He may have made it to the Frozen Four with his own players and still be coaching Maine if that issue had not occurred. He was following a legend where he would always be compared to his predecessor. Gendron will be given far more leeway than Tim ever received. For the last 5 years Gendron has found out how difficult it is to recruit players under the much changed D1 hockey landscape. Gendron had his best year with Tim's players. Gendron may have Maine at the TD Garden next year and possibly beyond. Time will tell.

Nah, his recruiting dropped off a few years after he got the job. The 2008 class restored some dignity and if not for them he would have been gone much earlier. He’s a great coach but poor recruiter.

What is Leaman going to say? "Maine sucks. We've beaten them 14 times in a row and haven't lost to them since Michelle Bachmann was the GOP favorite to beat Barack Obama. We'll keep beating them long after this administration leaves DC. I can coach circles around Red and their recruiting classes for the next few years are middle of the pack at best. I'm more concerned with UConn or UMass."

I suspect there is an element of coaching nicety involved in what Keaman said. However from things he’s said I think he truly has some “soft spot” for Maine maybe more Walsh, but I’d assume it’s common ground. Also Gendron was in Albany when Leaman started at Union. I assume the common bond would bring them together. He certainly had some relation with Cassidy when he was PBruin coach

Also CHN just tweeted how rare it was for a coach to make such a public statement (via a tweet of his own) in defense of another coach.

I do have a question for you guys. Some have suggested an extension is coming. Someone noted a new AD. May I assume in reality it’s for letting the new AD get the lay of the land. Gendron really is unchartered waters. He’s a guy turning 61 early next season. Coaching is a young man’s game. Coaches in their 60’s are legends at their school. In over 30 years I can think of only 6 guys coaching into their 60’s, Ceglarski, Flaman, Holt, Parker, Umile and York. So is this just to buy time to be prepared to properly have a search and develop a soft landing for Gendron

You currently know as much as Maine fans. There is presently an interim AD and he says he will not be sitting on his hands. The University will also be hiring a new president very shortly. Gendron may have already received an extension before the AD left, but if so, there has been no announcement. Gendron has 1 year remaining on current contract. Perhaps we will hear something in the next few days.

I would have preferred that... And, tangentially, I'm sure that all of HE is rooting for Red's extension.

Don't forget Dean Blais the former Omaha coach who retired last year is 66 and there is Andy Murray, 67, Don Lucia, 60 and Jeff Jackson, 62 and maybe more.

And Red Berenson coached Michigan until he was 107 or something.

(I think he was just mentioning Hockey East coaches)

Yes I was but the point in general still holds. Berenson, Lucia even Jackson were at worst just hitting 50, had a college resume, put up numbers to build that cache. So now in their 60’s for better or worse they get to have a say in their departure

I just find it a bit odd. Gendron doesn’t have that cache to say how this will end or certainly not write the final script. I was thinking the answer would be along these lines. In Guite we see elements of Walsh. He’s aggressive recruiting. We just want to give him a bit more time to be mentored by a lifer. 4 of the 5 HEA examples went to assistants, the other to one who was. When the time comes we expect Guite to be like Walsh extremely active recruiting, the closer per se, the 2nd assistant will be a young go getter doing the leg work, with the ability to connect with those recruits. With that we’ll have an associate HC who can be essentially Guite’s Zimmmer to his Torre. With his background he will be our front line talent evaluator but not the face of Maine (a Dennehy which is where question came from and obviously based on timing not Dennehy), and he will be a teacher dealing with fundamentals

Lot of details in here about how the M club hated Creech. I don't know, I think big picture he did a pretty bang up job. Every sport is in better/comparable shape then it was when he got here except men's hockey......and considering the coaches lost in women's basketball, baseball and football all three could've cratered. He deserves a lot of credit for stewarding what look like successful transitions.

Great post. I think an extension of one/two year/s is good. Because on the one hand I appreciate the team direction and the recruits lined up. On the other hand, I wished Maine would have finished stronger. If you look at the records in the last ten games each season over the last five seasons it isn't pretty. Just once I would like to see the team finish strong at the end, it was something Maine once had and was a hallmark... instilled fear in opponents. Get a 5 minute power play at the 6 minute mark of a tied game... gotta close on that game. Sure it was a warranted 5 minutes, he saw number drove through with high hit to back of helmet. But also, I can't imagine a better scenario Maine could have been in and to come up empty is very disappointing. Having said that, on a global view I agree... no need risking program direction based on this let down.

Blackie, Drew, BobF...

While I appreciate your loyalty, Maine is clearly going nowhere fast these days; they're still where they've been for all of Red's 5 years of futility, adjusting for the weak schedule this season.

It's very obvious that he's not the guy for the job, and perhaps the program is too far gone to resurrect it anytime soon... But let's call a spade a spade here, just the same.
