Re: UMaine - 2011-2012 Season Thread (cont) - Beating Back the Internuts ?

It was known as the "Hrkac circus" (Hrkac is pronounced her-kiss) and I still remember when they arrived in Orono that year. If I am not mistaken Bob Joyce was a winger on Tony's line, and I also believe Maine won that game in December of 86. Was the last game I saw before my first daughter was born who has since graduated from Maine!

Bob Joyce (52-37-89) was on that line, along with Steve Johnson (26-44-70). Arguably the best line in college hockey history.

And yes, Maine won 5-4...North Dakota lost the following night to Lowell before going on a 24-2-0 run to win it all, with the two losses coming after they had clinched the MacNaughton, and in the second game of a two game total goal series in the WCHA Tournament against CC, where UND had won the opener 6-2.

just insane lining the two up against each other...

48 games
Hrkac: 46-70-116
Joyce: 52-37-89
Johnson: 26-44-70
Total:124-151-275

45 games
Montgomery: 32-63-95
Kariya: 25-75-100 (only played in 39 of the 45 games that season as he went to worlds)
Ingraham: 46-39-85
Total: 103-177-280

johnson put up 85 points the next season without hrkac and joyce and only went on to play two years in the ihl...

I gotta believe the div 1 college game was a bit different back in the 80's and before. Much more prolific offensively? Perhaps didn't have the overall quality of players it now has?

Two things have changed dramatically how they coach defensively and take a look at the pads goalies wore back then. Look at the save % of goalies back then and today. Different game in many respects. Defense plays a much more prominent role compared to the run and gun style back then.

For everybody in NH and some of MA, WBIN will be picking up the Friday game, and if necessary, the Sunday game. Sweet.

Edit: It looks like they will be picking up all three games, if necessary.

The protective equipment that players wear is also much better, allowing more players to block more shots more of the time.

Well thanks all for the statistical enlightenment. I needed it. But I'm still confused. This was the Bob Joyce who played with the bruins, on a line for a bit with Craig Janney? Is he the current college hockey analyist on NESN?

seek and ye shall find

The Time Warner in Portland still doesn't show them picking up the games there, wonder what's up with that.

Listing might not be up to date, but all indications are: it's covered. No worries!

Good to hear, and thank you.

(Driving all the way to Orono takes eight hours off my life, but was thinking of doing it just for tomorrow's game, anyway.)

I'll have a Black Fly in Portland instead, watch the game on the TV (not the same, I know), and consider beating-feet up 95 for Game Two... Haven't seen the place since the latest renovation.

Gah, well, when I said that, I was basing it off looking at GoBlackBears early in the week. WABI and WPME were both listed as carriers. Now the site lists Merrimack's broadcaster, but no Maine stations. Concerning!

I just e-mailed the station to ask definitively.

My only thought: If ticket sales are sucking, perhaps they won't broadcast for that reason? Like (on a smaller scale) when an NFL team blacks out their own home games. Hopefully not and its just a clerical error!

Most all the web site programming guides are notorious out of date for most stations. I know right now, Time Warner in Central maine has just updated their listing to show the game covered by WABI and WPME fri night, and WPME for sat night which I assume will be on Bangor area's ch 10? We should be allset, but why does it take an act of god to figure out if a friggin college hockey game is covered??

I don’t think ticket sales have anything to do with it. In the past I’ve witness many games that weren’t nearly sold out that were televised locally. Probably the only people who know are employees of WABI-TV.
