I think that it is possible. All yo need to do now is make the NCAA tourney and then anything can happen. We've seen it time and time again since they went to 16.

I really hope Maine doesn't take UAH lightly, even though their record is a disgusting 2-24-1 they have beaten Denver and only lost to the #1 team in the country by 1 goal both nights last weekend. Keep the gas pedal to the metal boys.

I'm not too familiar with UAH's style of play. Just looking at the numbers they'll be extremely over-matched this weekend.

Maine's PP is #2 in the nation at 29.3% while the Chargers is 7.3%. That's a huge difference. UAH also has only scored 32 goals all season, while Maine has netted 87. That might work for UAH if they played defense but they don't (4.07 GA/gm) and Maine's specialty is on the offensive front.

Just keep thinking that way...

without looking, I am willing to bet that bentley never beat denver, but this year's Huntsville team did.

if I recall correctly Tim's record against huntsville is 3-0-1 (Jimmy howard assiting on maine's second goal and earning a 2-2 tie)

the official word is that this is HUntsville's final season in D1 and that they are turning to a club team... however there has been talk of keeping the program alive if possible.

I hope the fans up in Orono are very hospitable to the Chargers, win or lose... hockey is a close-knit community and the Chargers need a little support/respect, I think.

also... Merrimack's Carter Madsen suffered what merrimack refers to as a gruesome andle injury and will not finish his senior season... I wonder if Maine fans can send a card. the Knowitalls did.

UAH has made it official that they are returning as DI and have fund raising campaign in process to ensure that going forward - provided they can secure a conference home. It has been a roller coaster year, between the team being killed off and the crazy road schedule and having a very young team (only 2 seniors, 3 juniors), and now the program being saved - so I'm sure the guys would appreciate the support. I think their play and compete level will earn them some respect.

It's been a totally different team their last two weekends, not unlike how Maine's last two have gone. It seems the young kids are picking things up and they're definitely playing with much more confidence. Their scoring and PP% much higher over the past weekends, against Denver and UMD on the road at that. I have to think that the fact that they flew to Denver & UMD (as they will this weekend) vs. long bus trips (like they did to UML/Merrimack/UNH over thanksgiving and Mankato/Bemidji just prior to Christmas break) also made a bit of difference, not only in thier outlook but in their energy level.

They may not match up talent level top to bottom, but when they work hard and play their systems they can be competitive, so on any given night...

I seem to recall (last spring or summer), the Chargers were having a difficult time finding conference teams who were willing to play them. Maine and a few other teams stepped up and acheduled games with them. Here's hoping the program will be successful in the future and that they will be able to join a conference.

Looks like both Ben Bishop and Gustav Nyquist will play in tonight's AHL all-star game. Cool.

Yes, and very appreciative of all the teams who have done so to date, and those who will do so next year - hopefully their last as an independent. Especially those who have agreed to to travel UAH. Many thanks!

I hope they come out with energy on Friday and give Maine a hard time. I think the Black Bears players know how important it will be to take all four points against UAH and not take their foot off the gas pedal with an important Hockey East weekend to follow (b2b road games vs. PC/UML).

The last thing we all want to see are two blowouts as close games would be the best plan.

Ben Bishop and Gustav Nyquist are both playing for the Western Conference in the AHL All-Star game tonight.

I hope UAH makes Maine work their collective azzes off to get a win or two. Their friggin heads probably cant fit through the locker door right about now and what they probably need a good dose of humble reality.

Re: UMaine - 2011-2012 Season Thread (cont) - Beating Back the Internuts ?

The Warden and I celebrated 20 years of mutual incarceration on Saturday, watching Maine complete the sweep of BU... It was a good time. (She likes Tim a heck of lot more than I do, but reasonable minds can differ.)

The head-scratcher in front of us long-timers is clearly whether this is a flash in the pan, or not.

If Corkum is saving Tim's job, it doesn't matter much to me, as long as Maine is a factor in the national picture... But if that's the case, why not just make it official that Bob is the man, after this season is over?

I'm enjoying this team's results lately (this year's top line is pretty-much as dangerous as any Bear line since '93), but there are still huge holes in the D. Pryor and Heggarty are simply awful.

While it's really nice to see Maine relevant again, I refuse to get carried away. Anything short of a FF appearance will be too little/too late as far as Tim goes, IMO. It's been > 4 years since he's done anything at all.

Again
Nothing is going to happen during the season, why not enjoy them playing well until its time for golf. Everyone can hate on Tim but it won't matter until the games are done for the season.n Stay or go, we aren't going to know until later.

Re: UMaine - 2011-2012 Season Thread (cont) - Beating Back the Internuts ?

Funny how the basketball situation and the hockey situation regarding coaches are similar. Leichner is seemingly holding the basketball program together and Corkum is doing the same thing. These people need to stay for a long time.

Re: UMaine - 2011-2012 Season Thread (cont) - Beating Back the Internuts ?

I echo Fishman's sentiments. We'll find out if they are for real or not over the next 4 weeks or so. I personally think they are for real. How far they go with the lack of a solid D corp is yet to be determined. I'm done worrying about Timmay cause there's nothing I (or anyone else) can do. It's just nice to see the team being able to compete and have some national relevance again. Everyone should just enjoy it as it's been a while since this team has had any success. Ther rest will play itself out as it will.
