UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

We didn't play well, that's a given, but I also think we looked at it as, it's non-con play, the league is what matters and I think they also looked at it as they didn't have to work hard to beat RPI or NMU.
You really think they are going to look at NCAA games the same way?
I want some of what you're smoking if you do.

Never said that. Just said it would be a concern of mine.

To completely discount their OOC record would be equally as foolish IMO.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

I think SCCC's OOC record should temper that Final Four excitement. One win against teams not named Huntsville.

See...in this sport we call it a "Frozen Four."

I laughed when I read that some mouthbreather over on GPL thinks the Gophers will sweep by "4+ goals" each night. And I laughed even harder when I looked and saw Minnesota has swept exactly ONE in-conference series (against UAA...way to go).

No one is discounting it.
But we aren't the same team we were when we faced UNH to open the year, on the road, with no exhibition so I'd love to face them again now.
We had to learn to show up to work, even against "lesser teams" and I think we've done that.
But to say our non con record is a reason we can't make the Frozen Four is equally foolish.

Never said that. And I don't doubt they are a better prepared team now than they were then. It's just something that would be in the back of my mind if I were a SCSU fan.

Not even remotely. I have two things on my mind right now: MacNaughton and Broadmoor.

If tourney games were the same as a regular season non con series, I might.
Since they are completely different animals, I won't care we lost to RPI or NMU come tourney time.
It's the same with you guys, 8-0 in non con play doesn't mean squat come tourney time.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Why does your name include the work "hockey"?
I wonder what the record is for consecutive posts in a game thread by one poster. That little run had to be close by krazy.

Two of the hottest teams in the nation, although the Gophers had a week off to cool down/get healthy while SCSU put a beat down on Bemidji. Something's gotta give! Should be a great weekend! Looking forward to two raucous games in the Concrete Center!!

Can't. Effing. Wait!!

Basically, yes. Games are games. Just because we crapped the bed against NMU doesn't mean we have no chance against WMU or The Giant Q. Everyone's got a shot.

We'll have to agree to disagree then.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

I just noticed that Miami (#3 nation, #1 CCHA) and Western Michigan (#6 nation, #2 CCHA) are also matched up next week. I had assumed that UMN at SCSU would be THE marquee matchup of the week, but it looks like I may have been a bit hasty. It should make for an interesting weekend!

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

It is relevant and a concern. But as long as the team continues to perform at a high level, it is a small concern.

I know one thing is certain, if the our teams out of conference records were flipped, I know our fans would be quick to point it out.

Why is OOC record important at all? Unless they end up playing RPI or NMU, why would it matter how they played against them in the regular season? Unless you think that the WCHA is inferior to the ECAC or CCHA, in a tournament game I just look at who is the better team. There will be no concerns about effort when it is 'win or your season is over'.

Lots of big time series this weekend. UND at UNO, CC and DU.

Pretty much.

The Gophers non-conference record sucked last year and it nearly bit them come tourney time. Bronzebacks is right, if SCSU continues to play well, no biggie. If the Skies slip a little down the stretch, be careful.

He also said "Defensively SCSU is sub par". Yes, the number one defense in the conference is sub-par.

And they would be correct to do so, just as they are correct to point to the Gophers dropping points to teams they should have swept - like the Whioux at home. Those games concern me and I wonder if the Gophers will be on top of their game like they were against BC and Notre Dame, or will they come out flat like against Tech, the Whioux, UAA and MSUM (yes I know all those teams played well to earn their points but the Gophs didn't play up to their best in those games)?

On the one hand, I think the formula for beating the Gophers is simple (though not easy), clog the middle, fill passing lanes, block shots, get good goaltending and capitalize on your opportunities. On the other hand, I think SCSU prefers a more up-temp game as well. As we all know, the Gophs prefer to play a "pretty" game rather than mucking it up and getting gritty goals. They can play gritty but they prefer not to. I think Motzko is a good enough coach to get his team to do the things they need to do to beat the Gophers, and Faragher (sp?) is certainly good enough to do what they need from him. I think this will be the biggest test the Gophers will face (at least until they meet BC again in the tourney ;)).

I think it'll be a split, but I agree the Gophs need 3 to stay in the race for the Mac.

I think the OOC record is a legit concern but it would rank pretty low on the list. Personally, I would be looking at the following much more closely:

- How is the team playing in the last 4-6 games heading into the NCAA's.
- Injury situation
- What are the specific matchups they are facing in the first/second round

OOC record and past NCAA records are on the list just not very high (IMO).
