UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

There's not a McHugh in this class, I don't think.

Unfortunately, I agree. BUT, I think Brandon Salerno could potentially be a real force next year. Maybe not produce along the lines of a Chad Brears, but could bring something close.

In Beaulieu We Hope. Oh, and I think that Houcher will put it together next year. He's Prince with faster feet.

Pretty snide comment, given it is Huntsville.....

Not snide, accurate. There's a reason he's in the NAHL and not the USHL in his 19 year old season. Bentley may simply have made the best offer he was going to get. It's very likely no more than a half ride next year. In the WCHA, 1/4 or preferred walk on as a freshman with an opportunity to get more down the line.

Maybe in the old WCHA, not today's. WCHA=AH
NAHL or USHL irrelevant

The talent level is much higher in the Tier I USHL than it is in the Tier II NAHL. There is a huge difference in the level of play. There's no comparison at all. The BC and Alberta Alberta Jr Leagues are also rated above the NAHL. And even in the USHL, players still uncommitted in their 19 year old year aren't garnering a lot of full rides.

USHL I agree. clear and away the best league. Alberta is definitely not better than the NA. I don't see any league that is pay to play ever comparing to a free to play league. Why would the best players want to pay to play when they don't have to? Wenatchee moved from the NA to the BC league this year with the same roster and is doing just fine (2nd place). The better NA franchises would have no problem competing in the BC league. JMO.

You have some incorrect information. Neither Alberta or BC is pay to play. They've looked at it and did not adopt it, although a couple of Canadian Tier II's have done it.

As for ranking the BC and the AJ above the NAHL, I'm going by what many D-1 coaches have told me over many years and what I have seen in person and on video. Neither league is way above the NA, and you're right, the top NA teams could be competitive as Wenatchee has been. But the overall talent pool is a little better in BC and Alberta. Now, that being said, the NAHL is a little better than Saskatchewan and the Ontario leagues. The differences are not huge from league to league.

I knew the BCHL wasn't pay to play, but I thought the AJHL was. I stand corrected. According to CHN, a breakout of the current NCAA commitments by league

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

Just passing through.

Note that the Wenatchee Wild switched this year from the NAHL to the BCHL (less travel even though they are in the US). They have many of the same players as last season and are in second place in their 6-team division. If the BCHL is better than the NAHL, it isn't by much.

As to Ryner Gorowsky, I think that he has benefitted from skating on a line with Todd Burgess who is leading the NAHL in almost every offensive category and is on the NHL-CSB latest NHL draft prospect list (and of course an RPI recruit :D ).

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

Looks like that will pretty much do it for any UAH playoff hopes. That was better effort tonight, just can't play a full 60 minute game. Scoring one goal in regulation doesn't result in many wins. Gotta feel bad for Rosey, he played phenomenal and they couldn't pull off a win for him. Salhany had his chance in OT with a chance to win on a penalty shot and he didn't even attempt a move on Blitzer. Didn't help that the PP was atrocious as usual.

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

Salhany has great feet and a nice sense of when to jump the puck, but he has stone hands. He's really developed the other parts of his game, but I never felt like he would put it in. I think the only guys that have a solid shot for us are Saulnier and McHugh — I'd think Poulsen but I saw his last performance.

At least we didn't have the huge bomb of a missed pass into a turnover.

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

3-0 Bemidji after 1 period. Not sure if I want to continue watching Bemidji dominate us. Saulnier once again takes a stupid game misconduct and I hope he's done for the season, just cost us another goal. This team has shown no effort whatsoever tonight. You would think this team would be hungry to come in here and win tonight with the playoffs on the line. It's just one of many frustrating performances all of our fans have had to endure this season. I don't know where this team goes from here but this is brutal.

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

The game DQ was valid. He was jawing back and forth prior to the hit. Saw the hit 2 feet in front of me.

For whatever it matters, it was a game misconduct and not a disqualification. Leagues are generally pushing referees to not throw a DQ so that they can review video evidence before levying suspensions. I didn't see the hit (I had friends over for dinner, and that ran longer than expected), but Michael described it to me, and ...

The problem with Saulnier is that you never know when he's going to flip the bozo bit and do something stupid. He has a lot of raw offensive talent that could really let him do something at this level, especially as UAH is struggling to score and he can earn all the playing time that he wants. That said, he always seems hell-bent on getting himself out of games by his penalty choices. It's distressing. I hope that the league suspends him for the BG series.

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

Last week I was thinking how Salnier hadn't been getting as many of those, and how there haven't been as many calls for too many men on the ice lately.
Didn't watch last night (was in Oxford watching MU-CC) so don't know if both observations broke or just the one.
The penalties have to have a compounding effect, don't they? More time short handed means fewer shots, tired players, etc. Maybe thats too obvious to state.
On a side note, Miami's primary goalie angered Blasi about a dozen games ago and hasn't dressed since. They're something like 9-3 since then. So yeah, sitting out BG at least, seems reasonable even if it's the coach that does it rather than the league
