UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

Good UAH weekend vs Mankato. Looking forward to a good series next weekend in Marquette. Come on up and experience winter!

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

So how ya feeling so far today there Geoff.?

I thought that this team was done fighting. I was very wrong.

I would bet the attendance was the highest in several years tonight as well.

Why would you say that? Our attendance was inflated by it being Military Appreciation Weekend. We have a high concentration of active duty and retired military personnel, mostly Army.

We lost most of our active duty folks as a result of the last BRAC. However, we probably have the highest percentage of retired stars in Huntsville than any city in the country.

Re: UAH Hockey 2015-16: The next step

UAH getting a lot of press/internet on that 181 foot goal.
The purple Mavs , undoubtedly, would like to forget that one.

I'm really sad that my dad (Ret. USAF Maj.) didn't come here when he retired. I would be coming up on 25 years in the Rocket City.

With your permission Geoff etc I'd like to give your pbp guy a few hints. I like him and he's getting better. But... he needs to learn the referee signals so that when the ref raises his arm he can tell immediately what team is going off and what for. he get's confused with the ref vs the linesmen.
second, he gets bogged down with the names and the play is going on. Forget the names, keep up with the play.
listen to Ken Cal, the Wings radio guy a few times, it will help keep up. things happen real fast.
Get a color guy if you can. gives you a break.
Otherwise, it gets better every game I watch, and I watch most of them.

Yeah, he's young and getting better. Sadly the best color guy in the building is doing stats. He did color with me one time, but he and I go way back and he's very comfortable with me.

Just putting it out there... if you would like to take four pts from BGSU, maybe we can arrange another trip to Houghton for UAH in the post season? But maybe we'll keep it to just 60 minutes per game if possible...

We'd love that, but I think you're gonna get the big guy and not the little one in net.

Welp--now five points out of eighth with four games to go. It looks like one more loss and an Anchorage tie or better officially eliminates us.

So now what?

Does anyone really see any improvement from last season? Sorry, this team has regressed. I could name a list of issues I've seen from this team. I've watched every game this season, we continually make the same mistakes every game. I'm frustrated with the coaching staff. Anyone who watches the games know exactly what I mean. I expected at least 12 to 13 wins heading into the season. We returned essentially everyone from last season and we are worse...

Regressed? The team has lowered it's shot differential nearly in half over last year. The same with the goal differential. Scoring is up and goals against is down. It went from a -1.55 last year to 0.87 this year. That is a huge improvement. Shot differential last year was -16.5, this year it's -9.3, again, significant improvement. This year the team has five three goal losses. They have no losses by more than 3 goals. Last year they lost 7 by four or more goals. That number is zero this year. This is a far better team than a year ago. Improvement doesn't always show in the win column. Talk to any coach in the league and they'll tell you how this team has improved this year.

I'll put it to you this way if it weren't for some spectacular goaltending we probably wouldn't have six wins. Unless you've actually watched the games from a week to week basis you might not understand what I'm talking about. This team has been atrocious on most nights since probably November. We're dominated in time of possession, we have struggle to carry the puck into the offensive zone which leads to turnovers. This weekend we had zero chance of winning because of all the reasons I just stated. We can't expect to win many games with this style of play unless our forechecking and offensive zone time drastically improves!

Then how do you explain the improvement in shots for, shots against, goals for, goals against and a special teams net that went from -23 last year to -5 this year? Check the number of games Carmine stole singlehanded last year. How quickly did you expect the team to go from ground zero to the .500 level in a very good conference? The best class on the roster is the sophomore class. It takes time to build a program. I've seen the Chargers 4 times in person and have watched video from at least half a dozen other games. I have also talked with all the coaches in the league, many of them the week before or after a series against UAH and many put Huntsville among the most improved teams in the league. They are in every game and are much harder to play against. The last two years, it was Carm and not much more. And try and play hockey after spending 20 hours on a bus.
