UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Article about moving to club hockey:

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/10/will_uah_hockey_--_cut_from_di.html

Just shows how little portera understands about the hockey landscape.

That's right. I'm surprised Brophy was even talking about the budget of a club team, considering that the whole point of club is that it's not part of the athletic department. So this $156,000 (?!??!) budget Portera mentioned...is that part of the UAH athletic department? Are they going to hire a coach and recruit and schedule? What are we talking about here?

They are so naive to think we can just flip a switch to club and have everything fall into place.

Can the UAH Athletics department even be connected to a club team?

Anything is possible, though they're going to have a lot of other club sports beating down the door for similar institutional support.

If UAH club ice hockey is going to be treated like "every other club sport" on campus, their institutional support will consist of a $1,000 grant from the Student Government Association, IF they get a charter approved.

There will be a rally in front of the VBC, in the park from 4:30-6 this Friday before the Ohio State game. We need to keep this issue out in the public eye as the internal word is that the administration assumes there will some initial emotional reaction and then things will die down. We can't let that happen.

Interesting development reported from WHNT-TV in Huntsville...We'll see how this goes...

Lawmaker Leading Last-Ditch Effort To Save UAH Hockey
http://www.whnt.com/news/whnt-lawma...t-to-save-uah-hockey-20111101,0,6006046.story
Talking to the Governor. And they possibly have the funds almost all lined up to self support the Varsity team? Which sounds pretty similar to how Michigan Tech ended up saving their football program back in 2004. Hang onto your hats here. There's politicians sensing they can earn some easy votes, and there's money involved. Ya ain't dead till they stop skating I say. And if UAB gets into the mix about how they've been handing things for them, things could get interesting.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

If this works out that would be awesome. But we still need the new WCHA to get them into the new conference...

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

I've seen Alabama-Birmingham mentioned several times in the thread... How does UAB tie into the decision to kill of UAH Hockey?

I am not sure of the details, but I think the UA system has been screwing them in ways similar to the way they're screwing Huntsville.

I just don't know where Portera is coming up with a $1.5 million number. None of the teams that will be in the new WCHA, except the Alaska schools, spends anywhere near that amount, most are operating at less than half of that.

Maybe they're taking into account the possibility of having to subsidize some amount of travel to get into a league. Or, most likely, when the UA did their "research" they talked to Minnesota, North Dakota and Michigan to determine what kind of budget is needed, so now they believe that they need 1.5 mil to run the team, and would require the people raising funds to come up with that number.

Or an opening in Atlantic Hockey, which is also possible.

Well, if they're told they need $1.5 million, but in reality only need a fraction of that, then the money will last longer if this goes through. Not a bad thing.

Bruce McLeod did talk to Portera. The travel expenditure to fly every team in the conference in, based upon a 28 game league schedule, 25 tickets x $600 per person, including tax, baggage, etc (current price from Marquette to Huntsville $404 + $42 tax + $120 baggage round trip is $556) equates to about $105,000 per season. Flights from Chicago or Minneapolis to Huntsville are significantly less, $10,250 and $12,150, respectively.

Let's hope they find a way to get it done. It's amazing the tone of UAH AD EJ Brophy, hardly encouraging for this Portera puppet.

Yeah, it kinda sounds like UAT is blocking UAB from building an on campus stadium there. Mostly because it would like take about oh 0.01 percent of all the attention that is on Tide football and point it towards the Blazers. That and UAT seems to be going after some of UAH's bread and butter academic programs as well.

And Portera's interpretation of those conversations apparently very different. Portera has publically said it would cost 600k to join a conference and that UAH would have to fund those teams to travel to UAH. McLeod has said he told Portera nothing like that, that the travel was not an issue nor where the fees any where close to that amount.

There are several things that Portera has said, based on his "extensive" research, that don't ring true to many. There are efforts to get the full transcript of the report so we can see first hand what he based his decision on.

For example, he claims to have done this extensive research but then goes on to say he talked with 1 AD, 1 associate AD and 2 conference commisioners - 4 people would hardly be viewed as "extensive" by most.

Which schools did he talk to? In one public meeting, held on campus to talk about the future of UAH with students, he compared UAH's attendamce to that of Wisconsin. really? By that standard, there are 56 other teams that are falling woefully short. If Wisconsin one of the teams he spoke with, that's hardly a comparable school.

He's also commented about running a DI hockey program at a DII school/athletic department. Apparently he's not aware that @35% of the DI hockey programs are DII/DIII in their other sports. Wouldn't it make more sense to to talk with these schools to see how they make it work?
