UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Hope that the "meeting" with Altenkirch turns out well; don't get any warm fuzzies, though. Considering he was Portera's hand selected "successor" the entire charade is nearing completion, at least to me. I guess there is a chance a nice early Christmas present could come tomorrow... Santa, if you're real, we could use your magic.

Very proud of the guys to earn a well-deserved victory; here's to many more for years to come at the DI level.

Best of luck on the meeting tomorrow!

Assuming UAH does not switch course (which we're all hoping they do), I hope the guys on the team find somewhere to land. Looks like Clarke Saunders is heading to the Fighting Sioux next year.

While I still have serious doubts it can be reversed, Dr. A has at least done what everyone criticized portera for not doing - did his homework; comparing budgets for like sized schools & other schools where hockey the only DI sport; provided more realistic numbers required to run the program; is willing to consider a step-up approach to the funding, recognizing getting to the full amount in year 1 may be tough; trivial as it may seem, he's actually been to a hockey game and understands the game; is actually willing to discuss the matter; and is willing to meet with the alumni/fan/community leaders.

In all the communications I've seen - and there has been more from Dr. A. in his short involvement than from portera/brophy combined - he's been forthright and upfront about his concerns and the issues as he sees them. He's been willing to discuss the concerns raised. If it's all a front, he's sure spent alot of time researching and commincating

So while this is all encouraging, I don't know the Huntsville community well enough to know if the support is really there to step up and meet the financial requirements. But all they've asked for is the opportunity to know what the $$ amount was and a chance to prove they can support it, so I suspect they may be given that chance. Here's hoping they can.

For those interested, here are the recent numbers for the Big Ten team's:

<IMG SRC="http://mnhockeycentral.webs.com/BigTenNumbers.JPG"></>

You can use the source website to look at the numbers for smaller schools to see what their revenues and expenses have been.
Interesting numbers. I would say, as college hockey fans, that we should all find it alarming that men's hockey profits, and hockey profits in general, have shown a pretty steady downward trend.

According to the Save UAH Hockey group, the university has pledged to fight to "bring back" Division 1 hockey. A major split with the UA Board of Governors, but also some major hope for the team.

EDIT: Pump It Up beat me to it. Still not sure what it means to "bring back" hockey when it hasn't officially left, but it's encouraging either way. :)

UAH announces plan to bring back Division I hockey program

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- After meeting tonight with a grass roots effort to save the hockey program at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, the school said it would work to revive the program it closed down in October.

UAH spokesman Ray Garner said that while the school is committing to nothing beyond the statement it released tonight, it represent a change in the school's position on the hockey program.

The full text of the statement just released by the school:

Members of The University of Alabama in Huntsville administration met this evening with hockey supporters, following discussions with Chancellor Malcolm Portera, and came to a consensus to work closely together to pursue institutional and community support to continue UAH hockey at the Division I level.
Several scenarios were discussed to ensure recurring support is in place, and the two groups will continue to meet in the coming days to finalize a workable plan.

Haven't posted it in a while, but this applies:

Go get 'em, Chargers!

GFM and everybody else who have continued fighting in light of what seemed like a permanent black cloud placed over UAH, this is nothing short of great news. Keep up the awesome fight, and I'm sure all of us fully support the cause.

Went to the UAH homepage and saw this bit of disconcerting news.

Reserving excitement. It's a step in a process.

I can only imagine what the next athletic department staff meeting is going to be like with all of those other coaches already licking their lips to spend hockey's money next year. Nuclear meltdown (so long as Lou isn't in the room...).

It's a good night to be a Charger [they always are], but Mike is very much right that this is a step.

Hey, everybody. Now that it doesn't look like it's over, I'll be back some.

Yes, Geoff, Douglas, Mike, et al., there (apparently) IS a Santa Claus...

More like a visit to the mall Santa, where he promised you all your wish list. But actual Christmas morning still a ways off. Good first step but still lots of work to be done.

Would have to think that a conference has stepped up behind the scenes for the administration to be willing to do this.

Would also think players would still be free to leave without penalty if they chose to.

It might just depend on when they filed the transfer paper work. I do recall when MTU dropped football for about a week way back in late 2003, they had a few kids transfer out of the program there and to other schools. Giving that they're still in season yet, they haven't had the time yet to file that paperwork, I wound think that would keep em right in huntsville

This whole situation is the #1 reason why I love college hockey: the sense of community. Thousands of miles apart, hated rivals, big money/glory conferences, small conferences, alums, non-alums, parents, former players, band geeks, the guy running the concession stand, some guy who somehow found his way over from D2 football and ended up getting hooked, none of that matters, we can all come together. In the end, we're all one big happy family. It thrills me to see the entire college hockey universe come together when something like this happens.
