UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

And Portera's interpretation of those conversations apparently very different. Portera has publically said it would cost 600k to join a conference and that UAH would have to fund those teams to travel to UAH. McLeod has said he told Portera nothing like that, that the travel was not an issue nor where the fees any where close to that amount.

That is correct. From the Oct. 25 Huntsville Times (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/10/uah_iced_charger_hockeys_33-ye.html):

According to Western Collegiate Hockey Association commissioner Bruce McLeod, no minimum budget requirements were stated in conversations with Portera. The chancellor also stated that the program would be responsible for subsidizing travel expenses for other schools, a significant expense that McLeod said is not an issue.

"There was just one simple question about (travel subsidies from Portera), and I told him that I didn't think so," McLeod said. "Right now, subsidizing travel, I wouldn't say that's an issue at all with the WCHA."

Latest on the efforts of Rep. Williams, who has meetings with Gov. Bentley and Dr. Altenkirch lined up:

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Now that Portera is out (I assume; I remember seeing an article saying the new President takes office 1 November), is there a chance that the new administration will look to reconsider Portera's decision?

BTW, hopefully it is OK with you guys (I'll take it out if you'd rather not see it) that I added a third line to my signature.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

More attention needs to be drawn to the lies Portera had spread by that news station. They need to start hammering Portera for this. It's a shame that no one at the station has any clue as to the bullsh** that was fed to UAH fans.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

I am not sure of the details, but I think the UA system has been screwing them in ways similar to the way they're screwing Huntsville.

Yep.

Here's the latest.

http://www.presnapread.com/u-a-b-s-future-goes-from-bleak-to-dire/

I've already linked to the "No, the $600k per year salary raised almost entirely from your boosters can't be used to hire a real coach like Jimbo Fisher. Hire this guy who has no talent or experience for half that instead." earlier in the thread.

If UAH raises money for their hockey program, make sure it's in an account that Tuscaloosa can't access or they'll say no and take the money for a gold plated toilet in Saban's office.

The group leading the fundrasing efforts are scheduled to meet with the new president this week, who has expressed a willingness to talk about it. So the door not completely shut, hopefully.

That's why attempts being made to get the full report, so we can see it and attack any inappropriate items in there. Based on his public comments, the general feeling is that there will be many issues with the data he's used to make his decision. Many of these inconsitencies in his comments have been called out by parents, fans & supporters in communications with the Governor, senators, representatives, protera and brophy themselves, and the board of trustees.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

Yeah, it kinda sounds like UAT is blocking UAB from building an on campus stadium there. Mostly because it would like take about oh 0.01 percent of all the attention that is on Tide football and point it towards the Blazers. That and UAT seems to be going after some of UAH's bread and butter academic programs as well.

Basically, despite having already $15 million of public funding, the UA Board of Trustees decided not to discuss the proposed on-campus football stadium for UAB. Like UAH hockey, UAB football plays off campus (at Legion Field, in a not very attractive part of Birmingham). UAB supporters are looking at this lack of support as a serious hit to their program.

The indications are that the UA Board Trustees, which oversees the three-university system (Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Huntsville), has been thumbing its nose at UAB and UAH. The UAB stadium and UAH hockey issues are just two athletics examples. UAT is opening a research office to compete with UAH for military research dollars, Portera rejected millions in private dollars for a performing arts center at UAH and ruined UAH's chances to land the National Solar Observatory.

Chatter has started as to whether UAH and UAB should just secede from the system entirely, since both schools' interests do not seem to be adequately represented.

Might not be such a bad idea to do that. Its your school, Y'all should be able to do what you want.

I did five minutes of research on the cost to fly every opposing conference player, a head coach and two assistants in for each weekend. I doubt Portera did anywhere near that much.

Portera probably ran his numbers using an 85-player hockey team.

Don't bet on anything. Remember, this guy is Portera's hand picked puppet from StarkVegas. Now I'm as big a Tide fan as there is. But, I have always wondered why UAT does so little to further the other programs in the state. LSU plays Tulane, La Tech, La Monroe and Lafayette on a rotating basis on the football field, yet the Tide refuses to do the same for UAB, Troy and Jax State, opting instead for homecoming fodder such as N Texas, Georgia State, Kent State, Western Kentucky and Arkansas State. The post about UAB football was dead on. Watson Brown got the team too close to respectability and had to go. He even beat LSU in Baton Rouge, where the Tide lost to them that same year. It sounds like Portera has a bad case of little man's syndrome. Maybe he should just buy a big truck like the rest of those guys!

Cool. Weren't you the one with the obnoxious "CCHA - Keep it Eleven" graphic in your sig until last week?

Aww how cute. You really think the CCHA could have saved UAH from this? The same CCHA that is disappearing after 11pm April 13th, 2013?

**** right, at the time, I wanted the CCHA to stay at 11. I was concerned for my University foremost, and the longevity of two other CCHA schools that were on the fringe. Maybe you haven't noticed, but the CCHA was the Titanic; is that really who you wanted to pick you out of the water and "save" you? The CCHA is done for. Portera would have used the dissolving of the CCHA to just fold the hockey program anyway.

There are plenty of fingers to point around. But considering the evidence, you're REALLY grasping at straws if you have to call out me because I was concerned for.

I don't see you jumping all over the NCHC schools for going and making their own conference. You going to whine that the WCHA should have taken you in along with Fairbanks? It's all my fault for supporting my University?

Why won't your former CHA mates in the AHA join you in keeping the CCHA or starting a new conference? Poach some of the AHA schools that want to expand their scholarships. How is it my fault that Portera put the kibosh on that?

There's a LOT MORE going on behind the scenes than just whining about some poster who had a signature photo. Poor form on your part. I'm sorry I've never rah-rah'ed and whined that the a**hole commissioner didn't let you in. I NEVER want to see a team cut from college hockey. How fu**ing ignorant that you (and a few others on here) feel that because I was concerned for the well being meant that I wanted UAH dead. I never wanted UAH to fold.

deep breaths...relax...pump is not a UAH guy. I think most UAH folks understand and know the bulk of the blame lies with the UAh administration first and foremost, with the rest being spread out over a couple other fronts.

I can't speak for all Merrimack fans but I know myself and quite a few others have been following the recent developments very closely. On the edge of our seats up here. Hope this November isn't the last time we play each other.

Michigan Tech killed football. The alumni and supporters rallied and saved the program. And it is thriving today. There were no cold-hard-facts-and-logical reasons at the time to save the program -- they were at the far end of the GLIAC, long travel, smallish crowds, harsh weather, and while they were winning some, they weren't a national power.

Didn't matter to those who loved and supported the program. they put the money together and saved the program. It was good for Tech, good for the region, and good for the students.

Maybe UAH can replicate the Tech Football miracle? Why not?

True, and they have been one of the better teams in the GLIAC since then. Hell, they even managed to come back after they had a few guys already transfer out of the school while the program was dead, and they ended up winning the GLIAC that year, and earning the number one spot in the region that year in the playoffs. Stranger things can happen.

Re: UAH 2011-2012 - The Farewell Tour Kicks Off Tomorrow

How many UAH fans here are planning on going to the Frozen Four? Outside of any fans heading to the Denver game in January (if you want to sit with me, my DU season tickets are immediately behind the visitor's bench), this will be my last time getting together with any UAH fans.

Two years ago I got to sit in my UAH seats a grand total of two games, last year one, and this year, barring a major change in work, none. At least I got to see UAH in Colorado Springs last year and in Denver in January.
