Re: UAA: Exciting Things Ahead!

Pretty nice season for a team that really couldn't have had high expectations coming in. Congrats to the boys on that. There's a couple of pretty strong players that could be impact players coming in next season. Christian Weidauer might be the next Martin Bakula ... and Tad Kozun could be an impact player as well. Jake Larson would be the next best player in my book ... Amantea and Azurdia are question marks but they look at least as good as many BCHL'rs to come to UAA over the years.

Olivier Mantha and Matyas should be fine in the net. There's a solid group of blueliners returning. 62 goals return out of the 106 or so that we scored this season which is a decent percentage. I don't think there'll be any major losses in the early departure department. Scott Allen would be about the only real worry but it'd be a risk for him. Stick around another year and score close to 20 goals and he'll get a much better deal then. Coldwell had a nice season numbers-wise and might get some attention in the free agent market but probably only if he's got a great agent (errr ... family advisor) since he really didn't get any big press this year. But 6-13 are real nice numbers (league leader from the D had 7 goals).

I don't see any reason that UAA shouldn't be considered as one of the favorites in the league next season with 19 players returning. They did get a wealth of good experience this year that will serve them well. Winning on the road is the major obstacle they'll all have to overcome.

Have a good off-season Seawolves. Best of luck to all the departing players on their hockey playing futures and otherwise. I'm betting we'll see Matt Bailey in the NHL. I have my doubts that I'll ever get to see the Seawolves play in person again but I'll always be a fan. It's the only team and the only sport I follow anymore.

Nice post DD. Thomas definitely has got to get the power play bug-a-boo worked out, but I am thrilled with what he accomplished this season. I think you have probably changed your opinion of him as well ... I recall you weren't too high on him when the decision was made to bring him aboard.

I wanted them to spend big money and get a big name. He's earned every penny he's made this year. Still has stuff to prove. The reason I was hoping for a big name was recruiting. So, we'll have to see. I doubt he got much (if any) chance to be the eyes-on guy but hopefully he hits the road this week and finds a blue-chippah or two for 2015.

None of that is meant to take away from how he handled the team this season. He sure seemed to be an improvement behind the bench during the games.

Fantastic write up Donald. I enjoyed this snippet of what i could only imagine would have been just another entry from your fantastic blog had it still been around. Maybe someday you could find the heart and energy to fire it up again. :)

I appreciate that but the blog is a thing of the past for me.

Re: UAA: Exciting Things Ahead!

Tough loss for you all but congrats on a big turnaround. I think we are going to be in for some great Alaska battles as long as Ferguson and Thomas are around.

Re: UAA: Exciting Things Ahead!

I understand, Donald. Just hard to let go of the past, which was pretty frickin' awesome. :) (Not necessarily UAA's record, but your coverage of it). One can only hope that a phoenix will rise from the ashes that were the uaafanbog.

Re: UAA: Exciting Things Ahead!

Oh, and thanks Squarebanks. That was a truly classy reply. you seem to be a very intelligent and observant fan and I've always enjoyed your observations. I do look forward to UAA and UAF's rivalry as it is one for the books. :)

Great season for these men. Almost Coaches first words(taking liberties), 'I've never had a losing season, and I don't plan to start now.'

Amazing, right? I also think it was very classy of Matt to take the entire team with him to Grand Rapids, even those who were injured and knew they wouldn't play. It took the efforts of the entire team to get to the final 4ive, and he recognized that.

Thanks Squarebanks. One of these days you are going to switch over from the dark side. :)

This coach is a class act!

Re: UAA: Exciting Things Ahead!

Well our season had to end at some point, the boys should bee proud of themselves. So should the coaching staff. WE HAD A WINNING SEASON! How is this fact getting buried? ! First time since what '92-93 I believe, personally my first ever winning season! Thomas called it, I wonder what he will call next season?! We were soo close to finishing off the nWCHA regular season champions, our underclassmen had some valuable learning experiences this season. While in a selfish/spoiled way I wanted more, I'm glad we made it this far. Good season, good company, see you guys next season!

Re: UAA: Exciting Things Ahead!

So, I think looking ahead to next season, we're in ok shape. Like stated we have a lot of returning players although replacing Bailey is going to be a challenge IMO. We do have a good bit scoring returning in Allen, Cameron, and Tatchell. Defense is a bit so-so, we were not great breaking out of our zone and made some bad decisions with the puck a lot when pressured by opposing teams. Goaltending I don't know, Matyas played a little this season and was ok, not great not terrible, hopefully Mantha is able to adapt to college hockey as well or we could be in trouble.

The thing that's going to have to change is the special teams. We were terrible at special teams this season. If the PP and PK had been just a bit better this season we would've had home ice and be talking about our match up against Mankato.

It'll be interesting next season, the schedule, who travels here and who we travel to, will matter a bit. The biggest question is whether they will continue to improve or will they regress? I don't think they'll regress with Thomas in charge but one never really knows. It'll depend a lot on the on-ice leadership.

Do you see what happens when Alaska-Anchorage doesn't schedule UAH for 20 years? We were clearly what was holding you back. ;)

GFM <— happy to see things pay off in ANC.

Re: UAA: Exciting Things Ahead!

It was a very good year to be a UAA player and a UAA fan. I have been a UAA fan since 1987 so it was good to get back to the a winning season. Looking forward to next season already. Congrats to our players and coaching staff.

Well, luckily for us you guys are on our schedule for the foreseeable future! :D In a year or two you guys should coming up very nicely, even though your record didn't necessarily show it, you guys played some very competitive games this season.

Trust me, I watched almost all of them, including the games in Anchorage, watched on a hotel room floor before my grandmother's funeral. I'm sure that my brother was really excited, but I at least had headphones.
