U-M / MSU - The R-rated series

Re: U-M / MSU - The R-rated series

I love Michigan vs. Michigan State at JLA as it is right down the street from my home, and a great game in a historic building. But the attendance for that annual game has dropped significantly since 2006 (last of 11 consecutive sellouts).

Would you guys be opposed to moving the game back to the campus site and ensuring 2 home games for each team each year? I would love to see the game continue here, but i am opposed to it if there are only 12,000 or so fans in the stands.

Although your points are valid, there are <strike>2</strike>3 significant advantages of keeping the annual JLA game happening:
1. Fans from both teams are there en masse ergo enhances the competitive nature of the series.
2. Liquid libations
3. I almost forgot ...

There are other factors to consider having it at a mutually agreed neutral site like JLA (or wherever they may have it as the future of JLA s being debated). Here are 12 points to consider (one for each conference member):

- television (feeds being picked up in other FSN locations- which may help recruiting- unless Dean Lombardi has an issue with it)
- allows some of the Walmartines and WalSpartines to attend, since this may be one of the few games that Munn/Yost sells out, locking out some of our finest fans
- promotes the argument by the 9 other remaining conference teams that "they truly are being ignored by the CCHA". (yes, I know that there are 10, but I am choosing to ignore one team already out the door and part of that other league.)
- Gives the CCHA a real reason to celebrate Hockey Day in Michigan, because, as you know, the state line has been revised by Tom Anastos to just west of Ann Arbor and just north of East Lansing
- Allows Michigan (or MSU last season) a chance to actually think that this is the CCHA Championships.
- You can see Canada!!
-Don't you want to see Sparty on figure skates?
-Battle of the Bands. (or, how many times do they have to play THAT vs. Don't they know more than two songs??!!)
- They serve beer there. (shhhh, don't tell Antoine Pitts.)
- Somehow the City of Detroit probably wouldn't mind burning couches or looting. Just don't start running naked, or "spark it up".
- You get to mingle with FSD's Shireen Saski... maybe she'll even start the MSU fight song!
- Sparty's get to point up to the GLI banner and gloat. Wolverines get to point up to where the kook was walking on the catwalk.

This.

Great memories in the Olympia Room from a couple years ago!

Sorry, no link or pics...lets just say that hanging with Ms. Saski was a ton of fun!

Is FOX carrying an HD feed of college hockey like the B10 Network is yet?

Will scUM's mascot be there? Can he skate?

superfan is a major ******...I hate that guy with a passion...

I would hate if they moved College hockey to the palace. The ice at the palace sucks and there is no cobo joes...The Post across from the palace is overrated. Cobo Joes is much better bar.

I'm pretty sure that portable rink at the Palace is held together with drywall compound and used chewing gum.

The Joe might be a dump in a bad part of town, but the place definitely has a mystique about it that's unmatched. Oh, and the rink has ice-making machinery that can... um... make ice. Pretty good ice, too. You can't say that about the Palace.

Re: U-M / MSU - The R-rated series

The Joe is hardly in a bad area of town...nevertheless,I would rather watch hockey at Grand River and McNichols before I watch it at the palace. I went to Wayne State vs. Niagra / Michigan vs. Notre Dame last year. The building is beautiful but the acoustics and sight lines for hockey are garbage.

Holzy is okay. Don't know what you have against him. I'd take him over Johnny Spirit and his little bike anyday.

Re: U-M / MSU - The R-rated series

As a matter of fact, the game on saturday is listed as FSN HD. Friday's game in East Landfill is on TBTN.
Oh they list them in HD all right... and broadcast them on the HD channel all right... but it sure the hell hasn't been HD. They haven't even broadcast NCAA in widescreen that I've seen.

Imma fire up the DVR and hope for the best anyway.

Did you see his blog postings after some of the football games? They were pretty out there, like something straight off the mlive message boards. I do have to say it always cracked me up though when he busted out the Rocky hat during "Rocky and Bullwinkle."

Re: U-M / MSU - The R-rated series

I am absolutely fired up for a great weekend of hockey! I pulled out some old tapes last night and watched some great games from this rivalry. Theese teams have had some world class players pass through their ranks in the last 30 years but it is the forgotten players that have really made this rivalry so exciting.

Tony Tuzzolino and Richard Keys were such a great spark plug for MSU in the midd-late 90's. M fans will never forgot posting a 10-1 victory over MSU with all-american Mike Buzak in net at The Joe. This series is dead even at 15 wins each over the last 10 years. I will argue that this is the greaatest rivalry in college hockey.

My mother has worked at MSU for 30 years and my parents have had season tickets since 1982. Along the way my father worked for the stinkin Michigan Wolverines hockey programs for 9 years. It just so happens that during his tenure they never lost a GLI (he of course takes all the credit for that). It will be a very quiet dinner table tonight before we head over to Munn. This in-house rivalry gets more fun every year!

The interesting thing is this has been a series of streaks. Michigan won 6 in a row from Feb. '08 through January of '09; before that, MSU had a 9-game unbeaten string over '05'06 - 06/07.

Looking at the all-time results, I see that until the late '50's, when MSU finally got itself established, U-M held a 42-2 mark against us - including a 33-game unbeaten streak. When State finally beat them again in '58 it was part of a 4 of 5 run. Then U-M reeled off 7 in a row in the early 60's. State answered with 4 straight. Etc. etc.

So if you look at winning/undefeated streaks of 4 or more, it went like this:
1/11/22 - 2/5/26 U-M 7 games
2/7/28 - 1/8/58 U-M 33 games
2/14/58 - 2/7/59 MSU 4 games
2/2/61 - 2/24/62 U-M 7 games
11/3/62 - 2/23/63 MSU 4 games
2/14/64 - 1/26/66 U-M 5 games
2/9/68 - 12/7/68 U-M 4 games
1/17/73 - 2/28/73 MSU 4 games
11/17/73 - 12/14/74 MSU 5 games
3/3/78 - 12/9/78 U-M 4 games
11/21/81 - 10/18/83 MSU 10 games
1/27/85 - 1/26/85 MSU 6 games
2/28/86 - 11/15/86 MSU 4 games
1/24/87 - 11/13/87 MSU 4 games
12/9/88 - 12/10/89 MSU 6 games
10/26/91 - 12/4/92 U-M 4 games
11/11/94 - 2/18/95 U-M 4 games
12/30/95 - 3/15/96 U-M 4 games
10/25/97 - 2/21/98 MSU 4 games
12/27/98 - 12/30/99 MSU 4 games
12/30/05 - 11/3/07 MSU 9 games (including 5 ties)
2/23/08 - 1/29/09 U-M 6 games

Decade-by decade:
20's U-M 12-2
30's U-M 2-0
40's (no games)
50's U-M 29-6-1
60's U-M 26-22
70's MSU 23-17-1
80's MSU 33-14-1
90's MSU/U-M 18-18-4
00's MSU 19-17-11
10's ??

Right now U-M holds a 137-121-18 edge all-time.
