TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Watched the first episode of The Romanoffs. It definitely has the Matt Weiner cinematography/style. First episode had a mixture of standard drama, along with a sort of, "let's laugh at the old, white, xenophobic, French beetch going off on her servants" type of humor, and a somewhat predictable conclusion. The acting was good (I rarely have a problem with Aaron Eckhart's performances), and the tropes were all well-played.

Where this series is going to suffer, I think, is having a character for every personality type to identify with, as well as a strong breakout character (Mad Men definitely had both). Weiner seems to be spinning eight different yarns for eight different groups of people, with each episode tackling one group at a time, and who knows if/how they are all going to interact at some point. Also, any connection to the Russian royal family is very tenuous and distant at the moment.

Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Ilitch Companies (Tigers/Red Wings) announce they are in the process of forming their own regional sports network not owned by Fox Sports. That would leave the Pistons, MHSAA, and Lions recap shows as anchor programming on FSN-Det.

This isn't a surprise as more sports teams are owning their own broadcast rights or exploring it themselves. The Cubs have been threatening to create their own network for two years now. Lately, they've hitched their wagon to the Blackhawks in threatening to leave CSN-Chicago.

Blackhawks might have a leg up on this as the new web based and gas pump TV broadcast network "Stadium" is operated out of the United Center.

YES Network is owned by the Yankees.
Lakers TV is owned by the LA Lakers.
Various RSN's are partially owned by the teams they broadcast.

Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Should have done that ten years ago. Those two teams are bottom 5 in their respective leagues right now and their ratings are going to be similar.

Watched all of Bodyguard over the last few days. Meh. I expected more. Disjointed. Predictable. Too long. Shame. I was looking forward to a PTSD suffering Robb Stark protect a narcissistic and sociopathic Mrs. Durrell.

I haven’t watched the walking dead in a long time since it’s been a crap fest for so long, but I guess next weeks episode is the last for Rick Grimes. Looks like they brought back Gimple as a writer.

I am on the fence about Narcos going forward. Last season was a massive letdown and completely rushed the story line.

Just finished The Haunting of Hill House and I thoroughly enjoyed it although I thought the final ep was a slight letdown.

It was a bit rushed. What was the original contract? 2 seasons? 3? That could have had something to do with it, also. I still hope the story gets up to current day (eventually).

House Of Cards:

The final season, and given the bad hand they were dealt with the Spacey removal, they've done well so far (I am 2 eps in). Kinnear/Lane are great in their roles. The series still has the complexity of advanced chess, although was surprised to see that the final season is only 8 eps long. I am very curious as to how all this pans out.

I binged while doing homework. Started out ok, then I felt like it got ridiculous and felt like the lane/kinnear characters had little point.

Paid for the new season of Dr. Who on Amazon since we cut the cord awhile back. Definitely like the new doctor. And the Rosa Parks episode is outstanding.

The Lane/Kinnear characters are important, but JayFC, it's going Lifetime on the bit. A bit too blunt, IMO. Just a couple eps to go, will finish it up tomorrow.

Blah ending. It got away from what made the show great. *sigh* Talk about a rollercoaster last season. It went from being great to off the rails and then back to great and then thud.

Mayans MC:

Just watched the season finale. Hoo-boy. Very solid ending to the first season. For most of the season, it didn't feel like a real sequel to SOA, but now there are a couple solidified ties, without going overboard, to really call it a sequel.

Note: you still don't have to know anything about SOA, it's just a nice little bonus.
