Is it something to watch sans kids? Is at as awful as Futurama?

Because of your flawed premise, I do not know how to answer your question.

Yes, there are episodes that adults would enjoy without having the kids around. I know adults who watch it without their kids, but I think having kids around is more fun because adults and kids will often laugh at completely different things, and that alone amuses me.

Also, the parents are roughly my age as they do a bit where they’re both 9-12 years old (my estimate) in a mid to late 80s flashback episode about a mean brother.

Have a little 4-day weekend and doing a staycation for a few of the days while I work on a project that has me sitting at a desk/table. Rewatching Deadwood. Still so so good. The dialogue alone will be hard to ever top. I'd say it occupies a permanent place in my top 3 shows of all time along with The Wire. The third spot may rotate depending on mood.

I don't see him claiming to be hip or edgy. It's quite possible for somebody to buck a trend and not be posturing, but just be quietly right.

In this instance he's not. But don't automatically conflate being contrary with being a poseur. Sometimes it just means you're the only one with taste in the room.
