Charter Schools is just more trickle down theory. Just once I'd like to see the GOP with a different idea. That theory is EVERYTHING to them and permeates every policy.

see in the 1993 law written to start charter schools here by law they can NOT be for profit.

That's nice. Now, tell us how that applies outside of Massachusetts?

Better yet, tell us how you expect other states, or the feds under Betsy DeVos - a woman born and raised in Michigan's most conservative, Bible-thumping region to a millionaire father; who attended a conservative, religious college, and married a billionaire husband; who served as chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party from 1996-2000 (and was opposed on her then-early support of vouchers by moderate Republican governor John Engler). Tell us how you expect her to implement non-profit charter schools.

She doesn't, because Massachusetts is a blue state, and corporations know best. Oops!

Charter schools have become a nightmare. Check out the Last Week Tonight bit they did on them about 4-5 weeks back. Very eye opening on how they've gone from a very nice idea to a crock of crooked.

I had forgotten about that. Oliver exposed them. Big time.

Sure. But they can pay their owners and administrators who run them extremely generously. Not so much the teachers, though.

suppose so. owners of businesses are like that.

are we saying that admins and those in charge of other schools ain't? what is the president of the university of maine collecting? or the super at whatever town has more people than goats up there?

When you starve regulation that's what you get. And it's starved. I expect after Medicare the entire public school system will be in Ryan's crosshairs.

no idea. other states can go make laws however they want, no? they are allowed to look at comparable laws elsewhere and do what they want.

all the more reason to close out federal dept of education and push that all back to the states. no reason washington should have their hands in what local schools are doing.

Only when the Washington idiots pass NCLB were they really involved. You have to have the national dept. for reasons but local control should be the way things are done.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to mookie1995 again.

Yeah, because the federal government has no interest in making sure a kid in Mississippi gets roughly the same quality of education as a kid in Orange County. Or even the same quality as a white kid in Mississippi.

Scooby, mookie was talking about the administrators of the local public entities. Here's a list of MN's public school district superintendent salaries for 2015 by district, their reading proficiency scores, and years experience.

they are more than welcome to make sure anti-segregation laws are upheld.

however, 'quality' is subjective and subsequently unique to local municipalities, counties, states, etc. those are items controlled by elected officials who are closest to the matter in question.
last mookie checked there are people running for school boards all around us here & local reps and senators at the state level get their biggest feedback on matters like this. here our taxes are sent back to municipalities to meet local needs.

folks closest to the situation are emboldened then to do what their constituents need and expect.

testing akin to NCLB are dum :)

They get paid market. We see that every time someone whines about how much Mpls. has to pay to get anyone qualified. Salaries are for the most part a free market system at that level. It's the other levels where it's not.

Re: Trump First Term I: I for One Welcome Our New Trumpy Overlord

Local politicians can be far more corrupt than state or federal ones simply because there is less scrutiny placed upon them by the media and even if they do, if they have the backing of 55% of the populace then who cares.

Put another way, federal oversight makes sure the kids represented by the losers of local elections still get a fair shake.

really? :D

education is in the education business. not the corruption control business :) (you are helping to make mookie's point :p )

Holy crap, does anyone here watch Black Mirror? Since it's an anthology I have been skipping around. Just saw season 2, episode 3 "the Waldo moment." Its basically this election in a nutshell, British style, but replace trump with a blue bear named Waldo.
And you truly have to watch through the credits on this one.

Did you put this in the Trump thread because you think he's still playing the part of entertainer rather than POTUS Elect?
