Re: TRP: These Ides Have Seen A Lot Of Loves...

If they are in the long-standing group of successful bars, this would be another trait to go along with "simple but good food and strong drinks" as keys to success. If the sidewalk is big enough, outdoor seating is also an easy expansion idea for the warm weather months.

They've been around as long as I can remember. And the Lion's does have outdoor seating. Awesome warm-up bar. Chammp's Alley (separate, but connected) also obviously has outdoor seating, as it is set up in the alley between them and the next building.

Since we've figured out what is required to have a successful bar, all we need to do now is figure out the best location and put together a group of uscho investors to make it happen.

Re: TRP: These Ides Have Seen A Lot Of Loves...

The one thing that really gets me to like a bar and want to come back is a good live band. I don't care if they are too loud, or if the drinks are pricey, or if they have outdoor seating, as long as they have a good live band, I'll come back.

Problems with that:
- musical taste is subjective (pick a genre and you're turning away customers who hate that type of music)
- bands cost money
- is there a rotation of bands or a dedicated one?
- define "good" - it's a band playing a bar, after all

The "Safe Place" in St Paul. Or nuke "The Drink" in DT Mpls. That place sucks, but it has a prime location. If we must, take up space in Block E. They are desperate for businesses.

Have a variety of bands, that play different genres and rotate them, have a 4-5 different bands that are all a little different, and they rotate.
For me, I'm much less picky about music when it is a live bar band. I will listen to 70's, 80's, 90's, new pop, new rock, classic rock, country....if they're playing it live. I also think for a mainstream bar, you need cover bands. 95% of the people that go to that bar don't care about some song some guy wrote if they haven't heard it before.

Block E sucks. If Hooters can't make it there, nothing can. :p

Where is the St. Paul locale relative to the X / Kellogg / West 7th?

I think Minneapolis is the superior option due to the proximity to sporting events. Twins traffic will provide lots of business for 81 days a year. If the T-wolves ever improve, that's 15k+ people 40x per year. Then there's the fact that Minneapolis downtown has all the business commuters five days a week and is a much bigger draw for the college crowd than St. Paul is, was, or will ever be (I know St. Paul has business commuters too, but the number is likely far smaller than what goes into/out of Minneapolis daily).

BBDL - the coverband route is the way to go. Failing that, go with blues since most drinkers are ok with it.

For the X, there's 3 bars that I can remember that are in walking distance:

Tom Reid's
The Liffey
McGovern's

The rest are more than a few blocks/taxi drive away.

Fake edit: there's one other one in there, but it's always too packed to even approach, due to its proximity to the X.

There is Great Waters if you walk the other way from the X, but I've never been there, so I don't know what kind of place it is. I don't think its much further than Reid's is.

Eagle Street.

The Bulldog, and Alary's are also pretty close to the X...

Limited competition but doesn't solve the issue of being dependent on the X events to drive business / profits. It'd help to know how many office workers are near the X.

Wild Tymes or something stupid like that?

Re: TRP: These Ides Have Seen A Lot Of Loves...

To all: it looks like a place I'll never go to.

And yeah, I've never walked the "other way" from the X. I always migrate towards the tailgate lot and choose from there. :o

Re: TRP: These Ides Have Seen A Lot Of Loves...

If you guys are contemplating bar designs/features, I have a suggestion for ya...

Here on the southside of Chicago, there is a New Orleans themed bar called 115 Burbon Street...

One of the key things that keeps this place successful is the versatility of the place... They have 4 distinct areas: A sports bar, an indoor/outdoor beer garden, a concert area, and a dance club... Each is it's own self contained are with a bar... Because of this, you can bounce from area to area based upon your preferences... You also have the ability to satisfy several demographics within the same complex...

There is also crossover between the areas as well... They will put UFC fights in both the sports bar and concert areas... And fill both for big fights.. The beer garden is a place to go and cool off and get some fresh air from the dance club in the warmer months... Concerts will usually end at 1 or so, and this brings a ton of people into the dance club between 1 and 3am... I think they really got the design for a place like this right...

Re: TRP: These Ides Have Seen A Lot Of Loves...

There are at least 5 bars within 2-3 blocks of the X.

Wild Times
Great Waters
Reid's
McGoverns
The Liffey

I hate to say this but Bakunin and BBDL are right. The band that does the best at the restaurant is a blues cover band and they are pretty well liked by everyone here. Maybe we can talk them into making an appearance or two up north.

ICYHN,

It's FRIDAY!!!
YAY!!!

"Safe Place" is in the wrong direction. No one walks over there and it's not on the way to anything but the hospital. You'd have to set up several attractions at the same time to make it viable. I think the best place would be down West 7th, in the building next to Seven Corners Hardware (a funeral home maybe?) or in that weirdo novelty store next to Cossetta's. In Minneapolis, Block E or Drink.

You'd fit in with the other "investors" in that you'd be helping drink up any potential profits. (once the baby arrives, anyway) ;)

LOL that thought did cross my mind, we'd probably have to have some sort of way to limit investor drinking. For me, it's easy, I live a bit too far away to drink up the profits. :)
