Tournament Speculation Thread

With a Neumann win over Hobart, how much does the teams recent post season success and National Championship help their cause for a bid? Nobody likes to admit it but a strong program tradition with winning ways can really make one team look a little better if the breakdown is close. Neumann was stung on the other end of this in 06-07 after 17-5 record and ot loss to M'nville in the conference finals. Now with a
National title and several years as a contender do they start to earn more clout ?

No

The ability to earn $$ for the NC$$ adds clout - if you have the ability to pack the rink AND ride a bus, you "earn more clout" (hence the secret final ranking).

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

So what happens if Adrian wins the MCHA and Elmira doesn't get in? Unless I am mistaken, in that scenario the only teams inside the 500 mile rule would be St.Nobert/Point and Oswego. Does Adrian get a bye and come to Oswego for a Quarterfinal?

I doubt Adrian gets a bye...I bet SNC gets screwed and has a play-in game if that happens.

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

They'll probably do what they did two years ago and send Adrian to St. Norbert on Wednesday while the MIAC champ awaits the winner on Saturday.

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

Actually if the MIAC winner happens to be Gustavus that doesn't seem like too much of a stretch. I didn't realize that Gustavus had such good results against some decent teams. St. Olaf struggled at times but actually did well against some good teams including a tie with St. Norbert. They did get manhandled by Scholastica 9-1 but I guess it wouldn't be a big surprise if they do put Adrian at Norbert. I know the precedent is there but doesn't the 500 mile rule apply for the quarters as well?

Re: Tournament Speculation Thread

I bet whatever teams the Committee picks will play against each other:D....in some way or another:eek:

My money would be on this scenario if the favorites in the 3 West Region Conferences win their tournaments.

EDIT - Of course what I said isn't true with St. Thomas already going down but we'll have to see what happens with them as a Pool C.

Yup, if there is any way to guarantee that that they don't have to fly somebody for the quarters or the the first round they will do it. Bracket integrity is secondary. I would guess that giving Adrian a bye and sending them to Oswego for the quarters is not out of the question - furthermore Oswego is guaranteed as slot and deserve a bye - Adrian doesn't, but that doesn't matter when finances are involved. If it goes 8/3, we might see all 3 Western teams getting that first round bye just for the sake of saving on flights.

Interstingly enough, if Buffalo State had managed to beat Plattsburgh and Oswegi, they would have become the obvious opponent for Adrian

And, that year they were snubbed by Oswego for the pool C bid, (who did not have the better criteria than NU) who went on to win the national championship. Assuming, I remember this correctly.

If Hobart were to win the ECAC W tourney, I believe they are within 500 miles of Adrian. That would make a good play-in game. Oswego is in range too, but like has been said, I doubt Adrian will get a bye to the quarters.

If not Hobart, I'd say Adrian would likely face SNC or Point (should Adrian win the MCHA, which isn't a given.)

Hobart won't get a pool C bid unless some serious collapses happen. You are forgetting that there are two NESCAC teams and CSC, not to mention Elmira who are ahead of them in both the regional rankings and uscho rankings still after this week(assuming Elmira doesn't drop that far). That's not including any west teams. With Bowdoin playing Midd. this coming weekend one of those two teams has a good chance to dethrone Amherst in the finals and even if they don't the winner of that game will have the best chance at a pool C bid given the regional rankings. Oh, and Hobart isn't even in the top 15 in the USCHO poll. But anything can happen so who knows.
