Re: Time for a change at UVM
Frankly, I don't quite buy the death knell theory from all that has transpired with UVM that's being professed by some. If you hire good people change for the good can happen rather quickly. That's their objective, responsibility, and what good people are capable of. What has apparently occurred in this situation (through my observation at a distance) is not remotely unprecedented in college athletics. Not long ago a now former coach of a WCHA member team, an institution with a storied hockey tradition of excellence, was lambasted, vilified and maligned very publicly over the course of two years minimum by just about every fan of the program. They demanded better results and didn't hesitate or pull any punches when it came to pointing their fingers in an extremely caustic manner, directly at the head coach. There were numerous reported complaints from players with evidence to support those reports in the form of transfers and potential recruits backing away and or choosing to play elsewhere for reasons cited in fan complaints.
A change was made...abruptly (if you can call post two years of toxic complaining abrupt) and IMO, to a large degree, as a direct result of fans very vocal dissatisfaction with results and the abilities of the head coach. With the new staff recruiting success rebounded virtually instantaneously and a few years later the team is in the NCAA tournament. Is there a reason this couldn't happen at Vermont? You have to hire the people who can get it done. Sometimes it appears dependent on how serious the institution and athletic dept. are about competing in the sport.
