TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

Yes, because winning the Masters is every bit as physically demanding as one stage of the Tour de France...:p

I love golf, but John Daly is proof you don't have to be an athlete to play golf. :D

there are obviously differing degrees of involvement in each activity.

you need incredible athletic endurance to move a bicycle up and down them mountains (or at least a high level of doping prowess). that is much more impressive that biking around the lake.

just as in golf, the incredible athletic motion to get your hands in the proper postion while moving the rest of your body in tandem to create club head speed approaching 120mph, while holding precise balance to propel a golf ball 300+ yds under pressure is far different from a $5 nassau between peeps that struggle to break 90:p

That's hand eye-coordination...not athleticism.

And I never said golf wasn't difficult. There's a dent in my old golf bag that can tell you that. :D

you need hand-eye coordination to catch flies (the buzzing kind, not the baseball kind). there is much more involved that just that at golf (which may in fact 'splain that old dent :p )

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

I'm sorry, are people seriously saying cyclists aren't athletes?

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

i caught some of The Joe Namath Show on classic last night. special guest was Derek Sanderson, smoking the whole time of course:p .

i miss the 70s :(

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

They are not athletes.:p

Agreed. And I have to say it: if some goober riding his Schwinn through France is an athlete, so are pro wrestlers...even if the winners are predetermined.

Yes, and if you've ever taken part in a two-a-days practice, you'd agree.

Look at what Pat Williams does during a game. He gets down into a 3-point stance...then grapples with another big fat guy for 15 seconds...then the play is over. Repeat that until the possession is over. That's REALLY impressive. ;)

1. I'd say pro wrestlers are athletes. It's not fake, it's fixed (as the saying goes).

2. You try and get by a 250-375lb man who doesn't want you to touch his teammate. Tell me how it goes. At the same level, try and tackle a 250lb guy who is more muscular than you, and doesn't want to be tackled. And be successful at it.

The thing is...I'm 170 lbs and I'm not an athlete. It's a case of the irresistible force meeting the immovable object. One fat guy running into another fat guy is called sumo wrestling. ;)

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

Are you an athlete because you do something that is athletic in nature? I would say yes. Hell walking could be considered athletic.

This isn't like the "is that a sport?" question.

You calling AP fat? And if it's a 250lb lineman, he ain't fat, he's got mucho muscle and is built for quickness/mobility. If it's a 350lb lineman, you have the avg weight of Emmit Smith's O-line. You can't tell me those guys weren't athletes.

It's not just about wieght, it's about athletic skill (hence the term "athlete" :p ).

Golf, bowling, poker, billiards, chess, NASCAR....those are all either games or activities. Yes, they are difficult. Not everyone can do them, and few can do them at the top level you see on tv. I'm not debating that. But they are not sports.

Exactly. Heart surgery is difficult...but it's not in the Olympics. ;)

Let's reallllly take this to the extreme. Me being a forklift jockey (although it's a falsehood, I rarely drive the forklift; not really required):

1. Detailed? Yes. If I make a mistake on a HAZMAT order, everyone from me up to the head of the building (4-5 people) could get fired, charged with a federal offense (IIRC), and the company is fined in the 6 figure range. And you actually have to recognize the product (which isn't always marked, and there's no special designation in the numbering system we have to recognize such products). You are concentrating the whole time.

2. Physical? Yes. If you are out of shape, your performance will suffer in doing the specific job I do (there are areas where that is not a concern, for the record).

3. General mentality: it's a high-paced, demanding job. Not hard to learn, but to perform at a top level, you are on your toes 8+ hours a day, and in summer when it's up to 110 in the warehouse, and in winter it's about 50, it can become difficult in the later hours.

Using those general terms, I'm an athlete, and forklift jockeying is a sport. :D
