Tickets for the Final Four, Lake Placid NY

Re: Tickets for the Final Four, Lake Placid NY

Why wouldn't it be Midd, Platty, NU and Potsdam? Little Primelink throwback for everyone...

Potsdam has hockey fans?

The only time I've been there and there was actually a decent crowd there was when SNY simulcasted the Time Warner Sports broadcast against Oswego two years ago.

Other than that,

Teams like Elmira and Oswego would probably bring better crowds.

Most exciting sporting event I've ever attended. Likely to keep that position for my remaining years. Canadian TV coverage of the Olympics has always been better (except this year, when everyone's was poor), and a boon to those of us able to get CBC.

I digress. Wouldn't want to be accused of thread-jacking :)

Actually the Canadian coverage was on CTV, The US coverage was also good as along as you have Sattlelite or Digital Cable TV. NBC had use of USA network, MSNBC, CNBC, and Universal. Living in Plattsburgh with Charter, the only broadcasts missed were the Universal broadcasts.

Is that (CTV) a change from past coverage? I had thought it to be CBC for past Olympics, but that might just be an aging memory.

By submitting a joint Bid with a couple of other networks that I can't remember at the moment.

A couple of other Canadian cable outfits that I never heard of before

Unfortunately in Northfield we were reduced to NBC, because we don't get CTV. We do get USA and CNBC, so except for the women's hockey finals that ran on MSNBC we were in okay shape.

Still hated NBC's coverage that tapes things that run in the daytime and even tapes events and runs them later the same evening, bumping them off for events that were taped. Sports were meant to be covered live. CBC was always good with live coverage and up-to-the-minute progress reports concerning events going on that weren't being aired - like scores of games. The only way i could follow the women's hockey final was through a very weak live stats stream.

Absolutely 100%. Two summers ago the USA men's volleyball team won the gold in Beijing. NBC delayed it somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 hours I think...and then didnt pick it up until late in game 3 (US won in 5). I was extremely interested in it as I personally know two of the guys on the team, but I was resigned to watch it live via bootlegged internet feeds...one of which was in Italian, the other in Hebrew.

If Potsdam were in the FF in LP, you bet your life there would be!

They had very good crowds in 1996 down the stretch when they won the SUNYAC.

The locals would jump right on the bandwagon right after they get their broken legs fixed for jumping off the Clarkson bandwagon this year...

Re: Tickets for the Final Four, Lake Placid NY

I do have one kinda heartwarming tape-delay story. Now, this is all based on anecdotes from others (it has to be; I wasn't born yet), but I've heard pretty much the same story from a couple of sources, so it sounds legit. On February 22, 1980, Plattsburgh and Oswego played a crucial SUNYAC matchup; the puck dropped at 7:30 in Stafford, half an hour before ABC aired the USA-USSR game. Apparently, word reached the arena during the game that something big was happening, at which point coaches Frigon and Hammond (pretty darn impressive matchup there, by the way) agreed to pull their teams off the ice and suspend the game while the pressbox fed the ABC call of the Miracle through the PA. After the US win and some general celebration, the game resumed and Oswego won to clinch the SUNYAC title (oh well). One of the cooler stories I've heard surrounding USA-USSR.

Plattsburgh would have been able to pick up a Canadian TV station to watch it live (just like we did in Potsdam). Everyone already would have known what happened before the game started.

One way you can verify or discredit this story is too look at the Plattsburgh program. They always had all the games the team played in every season with dates.

Yep, I've verified both the game and the 7:30 start (the media guide lists it as you mentioned, plus the Press-Republican has a pretty good archive search now). I think you might be right about the Canadian/US thing, but in that case the stoppage might have happened earlier in the (college) game, given the 5pm actual start time. I tend to believe events unfolded pretty much as I've been told because one of my sources on this is my father; not out of his being, y'know, my father, but from familiarity with his fairly steel-trap recollections of old Cards games.

Potsdam had a 7:30 game that night also, and I made it from the dorm after the USA-USSR game to Maxcy just in time for the opening faceoff.

Maybe Plattsburgh could not get a Canadian station at that time. If the nearby ones weren't giving out a strong enough signal and they weren't on the local cable (which back then barely had any stations), then they may not have known.
